Day 12, Da boyz went to collect some scrap parts from da 'ummies, a few of der 'ard boyz and they even had some 'ard girlz - heh....

So I thought we were just getting together for a typical Saturday game session at Tom's house (where we have gamed for years)... but to my suprise he pushed the tables together, and set up the terrain for a big scrap. He had 3 of his 4 armies completed and was working on the 4th (plus he had about 2000 points in fortifications equalling a 5th army). Andy and I were tasked to build 5 armies and he filled us in on the details...

The gates of the Fortress walls protecting access to the Imperial base were now in danger of breach. The gates were built to allow assault access (and assault) from only one direction via a narrow ridgeline. It would take control of several key objective locations and heavy losses to position for sustained attack and to eventually overcome the heavily defended position.

Orks have been attacking an imperial fortress for days. A pivotal moment after months of battle has arose. The Orks have amassed enough forces and pushed the Imperials back to a final stand. Orks are now making a push for the gates despite Imperials having high ground, fortified positions, Impeiral walls with numerous sentry guns and massive amounts of ordinance including a deathstrike missile ordinance silo behind the fortress gates.

Special Rules:
Imperials are deployed first
No deep strike, Infiltrate, or Flank attack
Orks recieve "L" shaped deployment in canyon and in front of shrine
Orks have 5 individual armies, Imperials have 4 armies and walls / fortifications / sentries / Deathstrike Missile
Each imperial force and 4 of 5 Ork armies have specific individual objectives (5th ork army is free - roam)
Orks go first

Objectives:
- 1 point shrine
- 1 point strong point
- 2 points trench line
- 3 points gates

Imperial Objective forces were:
Sisters of Battle - Shrine force (contained St. Celestine... I hate her..., depoyed top right of orks deployment above mountain chasm)
Black Templars - Strong Point Force (Special character chaplain, high ground hill above impassible slope to top left of Orks deployment)
Space Wolves - Trenchline force (contains crap load of special characters)
Imperial Guard - Gate Force (lots of superheavies, tanks, heavy weapons, etc...)
Fortifications / wall - walls take 4 penetrating hits, towers take 6 penetrating hits, gate takes 4, lots of sentry guns, manned guns and strong point

I'm not sure what the Imperial point break down is, but the Ork points were something like this:
3,000 points - Gate Force (has a kustom stompa, 2 deth guns, deff arsenal, gaze of mork, repair krew, power field)
2,500 points - Trench force (has Zhadstruk - IA8 bike character, bursta kannon kill tank)
2,200 points - Strongpoint Force (has kustom stompa, 2 deth guns, deff arsenal)
2,000 points - Shrine Force (has Mega Dread and battle wagon with supa kannon)
1,800 points - Free Roam Force (has Ghatzkull, Mega Dread and battewagon with supa kannon)

Here's the deployment photos...

Turn 1, orks advance but suprisingly don't do much... shrine took a good hit, some minor damage to strongpoint force and silenced several vehicles from shooting next turn, the spacewolves lost a key unit in the trenches... looks like shrine could fall in turn 2... strongpoint hs way up on a hill and it's a long way to get there, maybe turn 3 before we can engage on that front... all hell is going to break loose in turn 2 in center though... Turn 1 photos.

Turn 2, The shrine is held by a returning St. Celestine, and 1 Veteren Assault marine. MegaNobz are making short work of St Celestine, and the storm boyz are almost extinguished, though they did there job on the shrine hill. The Mega Dread in shrine force has lost a kill cannon and working his way toward the Big Mek that repaired a stompa in turn 1, but the mek died to a stray Baneblade cannon scattered shot and poof... he was no more. Bikes have turbo'd up to the gate walls and are in position to apply some pressure on the superheavy line in turn 3, the assault on the trenches with both portions of gate force and trench force had mixed results, though the Space wolves are down to almost special characters only, the 600 point flash git unit with Badruck is nearly wiped out, we've lost several units of boyz, and most of the Imperial tanks are in good shape. Turn 3 the orks need to do some big damage on the tank line. The larger stompa is down to 1 structure point left, but all gunz are firing. The Stormsword (or is that storm lord... hmm) whatever, IG superheavy with Megabolter had it's gun repaired in turn 2 after being destroyed by a stompa volley in ork turn 2... sneaky Adeptusmechanicus and his 4 servitors behind the tank... at the strongpoint, the orks still struggle to make progress on the hill, though the bike nobz are in position to possible assault in turn 3. One dreadnought is immobilized, and both land speeders have been disabled. The vindicator on the strongpoint hill lost its gun but the character, emporers champ and most of the foot sloggers along with the plasma cannon dread are still going strong on the strongpoint hill side. So, turn 3 could be a key turn on many fronts.

End of Turn 2 - Status Summary:
Shrine: contested, but leaning to ork
Strong Point: Imperial control
Trench Line: Contested
Gate: Imperial Control

As it was 4:30 AM, we decided to call it quits and leave the battle for next weekend... so, back to modelling for the next few updates (I brought the supa kannons home to continue work)

End of turn 2 photos...

Rob (Tactica) is a lying greenskin Git.
Let me just say that from the get-go.
; )

After hitting the local Ren Faire with some other friends and taking my wife out to dinner, I managed to stop by for about 4 hours (enough for most of turn 1!!!).

Rob is seriously understating the effectiveness of the Ork shooting. His turn 1 went really well. He annihilated some key units in the mid field. I'm not sure he realizes yet just what an advantageous position he's in.

Although things SEEM relatively even (or, possibly, in the Imperial's favor), The Orks are going to start seeing the benefits of mowing through a couple thousand points of Space Wolves (Orks had some REALLY good turn 1 shooting dice against the SW's, who blew chunks on their armor & cover saves, in return) when there's nothing in mid-field to stop their advance on the walls.

There are some nice, thick, juicy heavy weapons on and behind those walls. Those tanks in front lay down a mean hail of gunfire, too... but there's not a lot to stop the hordes in HtH, unless Tom made some reserve Imperial Elite Deepstriking Reserve Force that he's keeping back & nobody bothered to tell me about. : )

The Imperial force is daunting to anyone who knows what they're looking at.
The sheer number of shots they can put put each round can be devastating to an army (though, 5 armies can suck it up decently). The Greenies, though... Wow.
Their lists are as intimidating as the forces amassed on the field look.

Next week should prove to be fun.

Let's see if we can have a couple completed Kannons by then, Rob! : )

OK fine, so you were there for the eventual Imperial demise for longer than I stated... you got me.

Well, I think much of the battle's 'current status' is subject to the relative perspectives of the players on that side. Though turn 1 we managed to basically do nothing lasting with the first 3 ork armies of shooting phase, they did silence several big guns (no shoot on one land speeder, no shoot on vindicator, no shoot on 1 dreadnought, and the multi-melta SOB's on top of the shrine decided to get down after the building got 'shaken' - so that definitely helped keep the orks in the canyon alive and moving...), the last two Ork armies (gate and trench force) did create some havok in the middle and soften up the Space Wolves trench line. Combat from the Ork Shrine force was very favorable on turn 1 to the orks as the SOB crumbled to the storm boyz, the truck boyz and the Mega Armored Nobz (MANz) charging.

Turn 2, the Imperials did deliver a good counter blow to the orks mid-field. We lost what... 3 ork boy units, an ard boyz unit and the flash gitz with badruck almost got wiped out. Several trucks popped, several defkoptas went up in flames, and the almost 900 point stompa is almost dead (1 structure point remaining). The baneblade shot that wrecked the Big Mek behind the stompa fixing it stunk... we only have one more big mek out of all 5 forces (I think)... and he has a shock attack gun down in the canyon in the back of a battlewagon. Turn 3 in the center will be a key turn for the orks. If they cannot silence enough of the tanks, more transports are going down and that will slow the advance. The bikes and remaining boyz need to make some good progress on the armored tank line - if not killing them, then silencing them. The Space Wolf characters also need to die quickly - to shooting!!! (must advise Captain Andy accordingly....) We lost the deff dread climbing the hill toward the strong point, so the biker nobz have to go it alone for another turn or two before additional h-t-h support arrives on the hill. I think the shrine is under control, and now we just have to hope St. Celibacy stops arriving soon. I believe we are going to have to redeploy a portion of Shrine force to assist at the trenches now that Shrine is relatively under control.

From the way I like to tell the story... Greenskins were put in an 'impossible' position... and they could only hope to generate an overwhelming and unexpected success by guidance of Gork (or Mork) using sheer brute 'git krush'n & 'ead splittin' awsome show of force so that the weedy lil ummies run off soiling themselves! So there - Ork perspective.

Seriously, the game is good fun. We play on some nice terrain and have a host that basically has a level of his second home dedicated to the hobby and entertainment... We have quite a collection of models, terrain and most importantly, good friends to game with each Saturday - all something I'm definitely thankful for.

Thanks for the comps about the game photos. The shots are from a cell phone (Sprint, HTC EVO 4G with an 8MP camera - if interested). I'm glad you guys liked the mini-batrep in place of Kannon updates. As the game unfolds next weekend, I'll keep taking pics and share the aftermath. We should get well more than 2 turns now. Last weekend most of the time was absorbed in building multiple armies, understanding the mission and deploying forces. I believe we are playing 8 turns in all, so here's hopin for a Greenskin - gate crashin success!!

WAAAAGGH!

+ + + Back on topic + + +

Supa Kannon Day 13 (Sunday) I had to do Father & Husband stuff for the most part, so didn't get to work on the Supa Kannons until late. All I did was damage up the rivets a bit on the kannons to change some of them from perfect circles. I find that if all circles are left untouched, they look too 'new' as compared to all the damaged areas of the model when painted up. So I take the extra time to make the rivets into less than symmetrical objects. If they stick off the surface too much, I also sand them down with a hand file. With any luck, we'll be painting soon. I should have more pics on the next update - and more progress than just 'rivet resurfacing.'

I compared the images of your scratch build supa kannon, and the forge world one side by side. Once they're painted it's going to be hard to tell the difference. Seriously those are amazing and I find myself stricken with jelousy.

Is there any change of a mold being made and them being sold? Cause as a big mek stricken with jealousy, I am eager to add that sort of dakka to my army.

Also I must say that those are pimpin chairs you got for your gaming table.

@Da Big Mek: Unfortunately I know 'anything' about making molds. So, don't plan on doing that. Regarding the chairs, those are Tom's chairs (the owner of the house we game at)... honestly, he has a whole level devoted to gaming / entertainment of his second home. He is well off, so it's a bit of a gaming luxury there I suppose. It's not like gaming at Forgeworld, but its got to be darn close.

PS - thank you for the comps. Much appreciated.

Cheers,

Tac

Day 13, outside of roughing / sanding some rivets on one cannon and both bottom sections, I think I'm ready for prime and paint. Tonight I added the worky bits on the non-periscope side of the cannon carriges. The forgeworld cannon has a gear assembly on my non-periscope side. On my periscope side, Forgeworld has a power / electric feed with a light. I don't like the light at all and the gear bit seems all wrong, so I left my periscope side as is with armor plates and I decided to use a similar electric assembly look on the opposite side... but I have no light.

I added a piece / bit here or there to finish out a spot or two, but I think that about does it. Tomorrow I will finish sanding the rivets on both bottom crew platforms and the one cannon that still needs it, then here I come primer.

Next photos I post should have some paint on the cannons.

There are 4 armies per side and in the neighborhoob of 22,000 points on the table.

With the exception of Rob's 2 Kannons, EVERYTHING on that table is painted. Well.
Knowing Rob like I do, next Saturday will not see anything unpainted hitting that table.

Approximately 16" x 16". So, @ 5 x 6 squares, it's about 80" x 96" (6'8" x 8') of table surface.

Eric,

Minor comment to your correction... Orks have 5 armies, (1 = Gate force, 2 = Trench Force, 3 = shrine force 4 = strong point force, 5 = free roam force) I think the Imperials have 4 armies + 2K points of walls / fortifications / sentries, etc (to make their 5th army).

Also, I have two battlewagons in that battle that are not finished being painted yet as well as the two cannons.... :( but considering there is upwards of 22,000 points in play on that field, I'd say we did pretty good...

PS - thanks for the pressure to get the cannons painted now... <sigh>

@ Brainscan, thank you and yes - plasticard.

@ Artsoldier, glad someone else sees the cannon's laughing / chomping at the enemy when they fire like I do.

Heck. That's EVEN MORE intimidating! LOL
Your analysis of using the foritfications as the 5th army makes sense.

-- Yawn...

Wow, great weekend. Got a bit of progress on the Kannon's last week. Sorry for lack of updates, real life took a toll on me last week. I finished out the rivet work, primed the models, dry brushed some boltgun, and put two washes on them of a chestnut / flesh wash mix. I do this to get a base color scheme of the model as I want to get a good look at all the details as I plan the rest of the color scheme (what will be red, black or brass that is...) and it serves as a oily / dirty looking undercoat of metal for the whole model. Hopefully I'll get more on these this week.

Oh, and we finished the big game for anyone that is interested... I'll go ahead and post some photos. In summary - we played game turns 3 - 7! (rolled an extra turn 6 and extra turn 7!)

Turn 3, a very very good turn for da boyz!

SHRINE: Orks assault St. Celestine, and she dies - Ld failed, and "Magikal Memories" of her lost presence occur all throughout the Sisterhood. The winged ummie wyrd-gurl is dead and the Shrine is solidly held by the Greenskins, Orks rejoice by shooting up the Shrine and parking a supa-kannon on the hill for good lines!

STRONG POINT: Ork Nobz make their first assault on the hill, wiping out one unit of templars and the Emperors Champion, but only to find Grimaldus (sp?) and his retinue in waiting - and they make short work of the nobz... appearently the templars all had +1 strength bonus and that added up quick with all those models! Nobz would get sacked, but they left their mark.

TRENCH LINE: The Flashgitz battlewagon with Deffrolla (though not modelled with it) to the left of the trenchline fire up the engines for a 9.5" Ram against a leman russ bodied tank over behind the trenchline... WHAM-BOOM, it explodes from the might of the deffrolla with the crew on board the battlewagon celebrating - and gaining the attention of a nearby baneblade in the process... Ork infantry (though heavily fractured in the center), gather remenant forces and a Nobz biker unit to assault Ragnar and his cadre. There would be many a song and maybe a new Toof-pelt made in his honor by da boyz after his grusome death to da kustom klawz!

GATE / WALL: Stompas focus fire to jointly obliterate the Storm Lord's remaining two structure points, but the resulting explosion does minimal damage. (Orks celebrate by firing gunz in random directions and lobbing exploding squiggs into the air from the Squiggoth!) Nobz on bikes from the flank charged and severely hindered the Macharius, it wouldn't fire next turn and it couldn't move... it had one heavy bolter sponson and one heavy stubber left. It was effectively neutralized. An assault on the wall from the stormboyz with Zadstruck see the wall to the right of the Rightmost gate tower fall in one round of combat (though it was softened up by 1 hit from shooting, Zhadstruck landed four penetrating hits himself!) Orks rejoice, Imperials immediately behind the wall... soil themselves a bit.

Turn 4,

Imperials send the Orks a signal, a gesture of their mood about the breach in the wall... heh

STRONG POINT: Orks advance further on strong point and the Templars are unable to hold back the multitude of trucks carting boyz up the hill, in a miraculous show of Orky Engineering, one truk manages to hit a plasma venerable dread with a Rokkit (6), then penetrates its armor (6), causing signs of catastrophic damage (6) but the still annimated sarcophigus of the dreadnought frantically executes damage control protocols, only to find the secondary exploding package lieing at the heart of the vital organ fluid pressure chamber, it says "Dis six is fer U!"- the dread explodes into a firey plume (6 - yeah, that was 4 in a row!)... Eric said I should note that this goes into the "sh!t that shouldn't have happened category" Also, we were out of craters at this point in the game, so we used building remains for the rubble - LOL, in the strongpoint photo, the plasma dread was located between the predator and the strongpoint on the hill. Templars counter assault into the orks and do a fair amount of damage, wiping out another boy unit and blowing up a truck that the Mega Nobz were in, Mega Nobz deploy safely and prepare to counter. Grimaldus sustained heavy losses in the Ork shooting, but invigorated by the losses, he surged down the hill toward the ork boyz, assaults, and annihilates the other boy unit with only a single member of his retinue remaining!

TRENCH LINE: Ghazskull and his ard boyz set up in some ruined area from a previous wreck preparing to kill the final, last darn space wolf on the field... but he fails his charge However, Imperials continue to fail and deplete the red stompas last structure point, but the big Mek brings his Deff Arsenal back online to the dismay of the Imperium.

GATE / WALL: Imperials bring in reinforcements and rations.... the sacred bowl of calories. (see photos). Imperials open gates and deploy the vindicator + sentinel relief forces, laying waist to the reminants of Zhadsnark Evil Sunz biker boss (IA 8 special character). Baneblade sees the Battlewagon with deff rolla as a threat - and annihilates it in an impressive show of firepower, the main gun fails to hit his Stompa mark and scatters widly. (orks rejoice at the large boom of the gun, more than the miss of the Stompa - boss notes that he wants a good piece of that scrap later... he's pretty sure there's a spot on his tompa's foot where he might be able to put a gun like that... hmm...

SHRINE: Orks are playing Kick the Grot!

That game was insane.
I wasn't expecting to be there the first week (turns 1 & 2), so didn't have my dice. I was rolling Tom's which... blech... blew chunks that night.

When I had my dice back for the culmination of the battle... Well, they were better than Tom's, but not by much. My dice were absolutely cold that day.

Like Rob pointed out, both Stompas lived through the entire thing. Really, with the amount of firepower being levelled against them, they should not have. Our rolls were just dismal. Plus, when we DID manage to get through their armor, we rolled crappy on the chart.

The MVP for the Orks, I think, was the red Stompa. The fact that it was down to 1 Structure Point (FOR THE WHOLE GAME) made it too much of an "easy target" for the General to ignore. All those shots (and S10 blasts) levelled at it meant that they weren't being dropped on the stuff getting into our lines.

Rob, I'm hoping you'll take pics next Saturday and post a "proppa" battle report. The scenario looks like it's going to be fun. I'm going to miss being there.

Nice report, the wall of text is a bit daunting, maybe cut it into sections by implementing pictures by the correct piece of text, like describing the events of the picture above. That way it's easier to read and less daunting.

I like the supa-kanons and look forward to seeing them painted
