Finally, we were speeding up play and taking less pictures, so this is update of turn's 5-7. I think the pictures explain most of it... but...

GATE / WALL: The next Battlewagon with the Baneblade in his site had no Deffrolla, but we forgot about that before we Rammed... (it did however roll a 6 for the deff rolla hits, which we had to ignore) however, hitting the battlewagon on it's side armor proved valuable, as the last structure point went up and an APOCALYPTIC EXPLOSION ensued shortly after! Orks have a new tactic, ram everything! (unfortunately, they really didn't have any more targets to ram ... boo...) Ghazskull is further frustrated as he went to go punch the baneblade, but the boyz in his ride took his glory first, he stares at the gate in contempt... The Gate force takes several loses from Stompas and Superheavy Kill Bursta, but nowhere near enough to diminish their holding of the Gate, Orks will contest the gate, but the majority LARGELY goes to the Imperial control.

STRONG POINT: MegaNobz do their thing wrecking the templars and a predator tank, Ork shooting over turn 6 and Turn 7 topple all contest of the strong point objective as Lootas, 2x Supa Kannons, Both Stompas with Deff Kannons, Deff Aresenal and Eye of Gork focus on the area, KANS for the win - to hold the Strongpoint... or what's left of it. Amazingly, the wounded stompa never lost its last structure point.

Commentary: you would think that we would know better than to only bring two Mek's in our entire 11,000 points of sieging Ork horde complete with 2 deff dreads, kans, superheavy Bursta tank, 2 Mega Dreads and 2 Stompas amongst a host of other vehicles... alas, we didn't. We only had two Big Meks in the entire force. One had a KFF and the other had a shock attack gun. Suprisingly, like the one structure point stompa, the shock Attack Gun managed to live through all 7 turns, and he fired for 4 of the 7 turns, and fixed the Red Stompa's Deff Aersenal around Turn 6.

Next week, Tom has set up a follow-up scenerio in another area of this Ork laiden planet. I think I'll post that batt rep (if I take photos) in a different thread because I'm not sure if it goes here with the Supa Kannon stuff.

Next post should be back on topic, sorry for getting derailed with the Ork siege for anyone looking for Kannon progress shots. Hope you enjoyed the off topic shots though.

Cheers,

Tac

Hey all, been awhile I know. Fortunately I managed to pull away from all the chaos of the holiday recently and do some painting. I put a base coat of scab red on the areas I decided on for the eventual deep read color. I also painted over one of the cannons scab red base with a blood red (GW) / bloody red (vallejo) mix.

It's not much, but it gives you an idea for what I'm going to do with the red on the cannons.

Works been brutal, but I hope to get more progress this week / weekend,

Tac

I'm sorry I didn't respond to this sooner... dude, I'm 35 and have been gaming the majority of my life. I've had a fair amount of practice to get where I'm at... that said, I haven't scratch built much. I mentioned this before, but I owe all my scratch build motivation and inspiration to this guy on youtube, Kanvass1:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nu25qmf99Po

If you haven't watched it yet, do so. It was a great start for me and made me think about a model in it's core components and basic shapes. He breaks down how to build a model with plenty of tricks. It's an 8 part series or so, very much worth a watch.

All that said, I would hate to think something I did discouraged anyone from building a good scratch build ork model. Definitely don't stop. Art is about inspiration, seeing someone elses work, getting a new idea or new twist and going with it.

Keep up the practice and creativity - it's just a hobby man,

Tac

Wow, Rob.
I have to admit my surprise.

You're putting a lot more red on there than I thought you would.

Looking good, though!

My plan is to paint out the various areas I have red, hilight / wash and what not, then 'damage' it up real good, so there will be 'less' red in the end.

It's a bit of threadromancy I suppose... sorry.

If I could figure out how to change the whole thread title, I would as I'm going to post stuff about my recent dakkajet now... I'd like to use this for my orky projects in general. If a mod out there can edit it, that would be great. "Ork Supa Kannon Kustom Scratch Build and other Orky stuff" would be great.

(I'll finish those supa kannons one of these days... <sigh> )

Anyway, played a tourny last weekend (first in years). It was a goodbye 5th edition event where all kinds of screwy mission effects were going on, and we were allowed to take apoc formations that fit within a normal force org and didn't use FW units... but the apoc special rules the formation afforded were legal... anyway, I managed a win with some BA in a Titanhammer formation along with some sparce troops, stormraven and Mephiston trucking around. For my efforts, I was awarded credit which I used toward a new Dakkajet! (sorry, no BA love - LOL). After the home duties Sunday, I threw it together and primed before bed. After Mon night, here's where it's at.

The only conversion work on this is that ork glyph the rest is all the kit. The glyph on the wing was part of another bit in the box. I removed all of the back of the bit from the glyph to modify it so I could put it on the wing... yeah, not hard. The kit just looked cool. The instructions don't cover using the additional bit between the wings to add the third set of guns, but it's an ork kit and 3 sets of guns are legal so why not! First night was paint black over primer, drybrush silver, wash with a chestnut (deep red / brown) wash, dry bursh it siliver again, wash it again.... hand paint flames.

Tuesday night I got a few more hours at it after dinner... and the photos... oh, and yes, checkering is a time consuming pain. However, it looks so cool.

I'm going to fade out some of that red, weather it more, do some highlighting on the silver, add brass with oily over coat, etc... need to do something with the canopy and glass too.

I went with an enclosed canopy and painted because I hate the clash of 'plastic glass' with an otherwise painted model, and the ork bitz looked cool to use elsewhere.

If wondering about the 3 sets of supa-shootas and burna bomz... I'm going with the dakkajet configuration for game play, the 3 supashootas are viciously fun and the bombz are... just gas tanks.

Tues was addition of red on haphazard areas with some highlighting, some panels looking newer than others. I use a deep scab red first to establish a basis for the color layering. Then a blood red, then a flame orange highlighting to get it to this stage. Except for the solid red areas, the three layers were all stippled on. On the solid red area around the vents up top, I painted that on and just edged out the highlight. Using a light grey color, I paneled out where I wanted checkers. Using a micro pen, I drew out the lines for the checkers on each area, then painted over the lines with black, then painted in the checkers in alternating pattern. Then came back with the light grey and expanded those boxes a bit to fit the black checkers.

Thank you for the encouragement. Life tends to get in the way of the hobby for me from time to time, but I'll see if I can at least get some periodic posts and progress. Thanks for tip on title change too.

Night 3 of painting: added detail to the checkering, dark grey stripes to black and white stripes to the light grey boxes, plus a bit of wash to the corners of the lighter boxes to dingy it up a bit. Added some brass bits with some chestnut washing here and there. Roughed up some of the red with boltgun metal and put a wash on those areas to blend it back as well. Started to put some color on the glyphs at front and on wing. grey base, white coat and a wash.

Thinking about adding some red to those teeth on the front... haven't decided... Still don't know what I'm doing with the glass either. I'll sleep on it.

4th day of painting, etched out silver highlights, added some window gleaning, painted up rivots, based put some sand / stone and black paint on the base, added a couple black panels, painted some red 'patch' plates, added the red teeth and highlighted them on the nose and painted out the rivots. Outside of the base, I think the plane is done.

First shot is from natural sunlight coming in the windows this morning. The intense light really brought out the yellows and the highlights in the photo. That's more of what the yellows and reds look like in person, but the sunlight also adds a lot of shadows and washes out all of the silver highlights... so, pfft... mixed bag of goods there, LOL. The other shots are me standing in front of the sunlight but with all the kitchen lights on, so artificial lighting with sunlight background. I'm just holding a smartphone for the photos, but hopefully you get the idea.

DakkaJet is done. Pics suck, my phone / camera is acting up...

Painted out the base. Used masking tape to protect the flying stand in sealing, put two gloss coats and one dull coat of testers. Then added a bit of blended static grass here and there.

Put a bit more effort into a boss that's been sitting on my painting tray for a while too... really hate these photos, it's bleeding out the colors something awful...

Sorry, I hate painting pilots. I quite doing that in 3rd edition for a few reasons... I have screwed up more plastic windows than I can count or remember over the years. I don't like the way the plastic looks in contrast with an otherwise fully painted model, and when you leave the plastic out, the model doesn't look right as there's no window now... OK, orks can get away with it, but others can't.

More importantly, I'm a gamer first and a painter / hobbyist second... so, pilot painting was deemed unnecessary after seeing how much of the paint work was tedious in the grand scheme of the overall model... or which was lost when I put the pilot into the cockpit... so... (shrug)
