Back in April when I first suggested RED Space Wolves there was a little debate, (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/291775.page), so with help from Gunzhard and others here's the Lycan's Background Story, if you do finish reading it I'd love your feedback.

The Founding
“The plan was in place, all that was needed was for Redmaw to fall for it, and they would soon have fallen to the Ruinous powers,” Ruin Priest Skoll Helhiem fumed, “But now the High Lords of Terra send these Lycan, more Russ puppies!”
The Lycan Chapter, were formed covertly by the high lords of Terra. Initially in very low numbers as a follow up examination of the Russ geneseed. Lacking their own spacecraft, armoury and numbers sufficient to stand alone they were placed in the charge of Bran Redmaw's great company.
Aware of the coming engagement Ruin Priest Skoll Helhiem suggested to Redmaw that the Lycan's should fight alone if they were to prove themselves, with this suggestion in Redmaw’s head, he was sure of eradicating this new 'thorn' in his side, so that he could continue with his corruption of Redmaw's company
Buliwyf Asgradsson, Sergeant of the Lycan entered the Great hall of Redmaw with trepidation, “Hold there youngster,” calls Rune Priest Skoll Helhiem “I’ve some advice for you. If it sounds like Redmaw’s making a challenge, I’d accept if I was you... that way you can sooner win his favour, and achieve his approval for your Lycan’s to grow.”

Imperial forces on the planet Tallivar Prime were recently overrun by Chaos devout fanatics under the hypnotic spell of Countess Palin; the battle had spread to two continents. Before the space marine craft had arrived in the system, Redmaw drunkenly teased that he would send the Lycan to recapture the western continent alone. Before the laughter had subsided, the Lycan Sergeant arose and accepted the challenge to a suddenly silent room. "So you shall", was Bran's retort followed by an enthusiastic howl.

The Lycan were the last to make the planet drop as the space marine vessel moved into orbit above the secondary stage of war. Once deployed it was clear that this tiny force of Astartes had only minutes to fortify their position before what appeared to be, an ocean of fanatics met them head on. For reasons still unknown communications with orbit and the forces of Redmaw's company were never established. Whether by intent or other factors there would be no cry for help.
As the first waves approached, Sergeant Buliwyf Asgradsson instructed his colossal men to lay down a torrent of steady bolter fire, knowing the fight would come to chain-swords and powered axes within seconds. Imperial rounds cut through the charging crowd with deadly precision but the approaching tide never slowed. The earth shook as the enemy finally came within range of the Astartes counter-charge. With a stream of wild howls and roars the Lycan drew close combat weapons and dove into the mob of chaotic flesh.
The sounds of this great clash and the crunching of bone and skull were near deafening but the Astartes held their position. The Lycan soon formed a tight pack and cut large bloody gaps in the horde as it continued to roll forward. For hours the battle endured in such a manner that the Astartes eventually stood on higher ground composed entirely of the hacked traitor corpses. From their bloody vantage point they could now see the Countess Palin herself with her personal bodyguard in the distance. The Countess was engaged in some manner of sorcery, likely to call upon foul creatures of the warp. Sergeant Buliwyf Asgradsson decided he would not allow her the chance. Giving up the higher ground the Astartes cut their way down towards the greatest mass of enemy bodies. Safe within her large cushion of followers the Countess seemed unworried. As the Lycan drew closer to their objective it became clear that they now faced more than mere fanatics. Bolter rounds ripped through the mass and immediately brought down two of the blessed Astartes along with a number of fanatics caught in the cross fire. These were traitor space marines they now faced. The personal bodyguard of Countess Palin was made up of battle brothers not unlike themselves; these treacherous dogs at one time fought for the Emperor of mankind. Now they would die by his vengeful fist.

As the thunderhawks of Bran Redmaw approached the second stage of war they saw only an ocean of red and brown. Upon finally spotting the two dozen or so figures that remained standing the thunderhawks came to a swift landing. Bran Redmaw slowly approached the barely recognizable Veteran Sergeant of the Lycan, not a spot of the sergeant's divine power-armour was recognizable through the fresh gore. "You wear red well", Redmaw remarked with a grin and then calmly asked, "is that the head of the she-devil leading this party you have there?". As Sergeant Buliwyf Asgradsson nodded in acknowledgment Wolf Lord Bran Redmaw burst into laughter and gave the sergeant a steely clap on his blood soaked shoulder. "Well done lad... well done."

Unaware of the plotting of Rune Priest Skoll Helhiem to destroy Buliwyf Asgradsson’s fledgling Chapter, and consequently turn his Chapter, Redmaw grudgingly sent his approval to the High Lord that the Lycan where to be allowed to grow into a Chapter in their own right. They did appear to have some promise, were they not responsible for the destruction of Countess Palin’s forces, and, it did appear that this time the Canis Genius with the Lycan was stable.

The Beginning of the End
At the very start of the Chapters growth, Buliwyf was forced to rely on the Space Wolves for assistance in the training of the neophytes that were selected for initiation into the chapter. With no home world, suitable candidates were often selected from many of the planets in the conflict zone in which the Chapter operated. A key factor amongst the support initially provided by the Space Wolves, was the assistance of the Rune Priests in the screening and training of the young neophytes. The most willing supporter from within the Space wolves was one Rune Priest Skoll Helhiem, who took this opportunity to seed the doom of the Lycan, from within their own ranks by not only training many of the neophytes, but more critically, in the selection of many of the chapters own Rune Priests.
Eventually the Lycan had the strength to support themselves as a Chapter. With no home world of their own, they roomed the stars as one huge fleet never splitting the Chapter with them it was all or none. With the forces of the Imperium stretched to breaking point during the 13th Black Crusade the Lycan were sent to the furthest planet in the Galactic North, Dimmamar to investigate why communication with imperial forces to the area had been lost.
En-route to Dimmamar the fleet of the Lycan started to intercept strange transmissions in an unknown cypher code. Upon investigation by the chapters Iron Priests it was identified that the cypher was of Space Wolves origin, confused but not overly concerned, Buliwyf chose to ignore the transmissions believing that as many of his marine’s had formed bonds of brotherhood with fellow marines from within the Space Wolves they were personnal communicates, and after all such communication had not been unusual, though the number of messages being received at that time was higher than normal.
Strangest of all, throughout the journey to the Dimmamar system tensions within the chapter where running high, much higher than would normally have been expected from the Chapter prior to an engagement, it was reported by many of the Chapters Wolf Priests that many fights had broken out between marines of rival companies and more unusually within their own companies. Tension and petty arguments continued to trouble the Chapter until finally the unspoken divide created by Rune Priest Skoll Helhiem broke into open conflict and the chapter was suddenly at war with itself. It appeared as if some strange madness had overtaken many of Buliwyf’s Space Marines, with the largest number effected, being from those Marine’s inducted into the Chapter soon after the initial engagement with the forces of Countess Palin, worst still many of these marines appeared to show signs of mutation. Finally realizing that this madness was in fact the corruption of his marines by the forces of Chaos and not an effect of the Canis Genius, Buliwyf knew that if his Chapter was to survive he and any loyal marines would have to exterminate this vermin from within his chapter.
The conflict within the Chapter harkened back to the darkest days of the Horus Heresy, with no quarter being given by either side, the chapter undertook the bloodiest battle in its short history. Slowly, Buliwyf ‘s forces eradicated the parts of his Chapter that had fallen to the influence of chaos, but not before over half his chapter was destroyed, and many of the ships of his fleet left burning hulks in space with much of their armoury lost, and worse still news of their strife had leaked out.
Finally with order restored to his battered Chapter, Buliwyf turned his attention to understanding how this betrayal had come about. Within a cell of his Battle Barge the answer lay in the form of a former member of his chapter.
“Who!.....Who is responsible, who do you serve?”, the youngest and only surviving Wolf Priest glared down at the battered and broken body of a former Rune Priest.
Reluctantly and with much coaching the answer was dragged from the renegade Rune Priest. Mumbling, the answer finally spilled from the broken jawed, and blooded mouth of the renegade “Skoll Helhiem, Redmaw’s Rune Priest, we have always served him, and his masters, the lords of Chaos!...”

Realizing how he had been played and the implication of a traitor amongst Redmaw’s Company, Asgradsson attempted to warn Redmaw, unfortunately for the Lycan, Rune Priest Skoll Helhiem, had recently advised Redmaw of the Lycan’s own fall to heresy and was able to counter any accusation made against him, after all, had he not served with Redmar for countless year’s, and were not Buliwyf ‘s claims just the insidious plotting of traitorous scum . Redmaw raged at this insult, that a barely tested traitorous pup, would dare insult the loyalty of his most trusted advisor, Redmaw swore that he would personally, along with his entire 1st company eradicate this upstart and his traitorous Chapter.

Redmar had deeply under estimated the abilities of Buliwyf , and unlike most battles between Marines, the fight between the two wolf forces resulted in very little blood being shed by each other, Buliwyf Asgradsson superior tactic, cunning and some low tricks, managed to subdue the forces of Redmaw’s and forcing a parlay between the two commanders. Redmaw expecting only death at the hands of Buliwyf was more than surprised when he was informed that he was to choose the place of the meeting and that Buliwyf would be on his own but he was free to bring one other, Rune Priest Skoll Helhiem was to accompany him. Buliwyf swore he would prove that he and his men were not in league with Ruinous powers or concede to Redmar judgment.
Rune Priest Skoll Helhiem realizing that if the two commanders were allowed to talk freely he may well be exposed. With the situation finally out of his control, the Rune Priest was forced into a more direct approach, he could still with the aid the ruinous power, hand them at least one chapter, but first, these two commanders would have to die. Lunging at Redmaw, Helhiem swung his great weapon at the Space Wolf leader, if he could kill him, he’d be able to blame his murder on Buliwyf, ensuring that these two loyal forces destroy one another, the remainder would look to him for guidance and then..... they would be ‘his’.
Buliwyf, who had anticipated some reaction from the Rune Priest, intercepted the Rune Priests attack, for several minutes the two marines traded blows, but finally, Buliwyf struck Helhiem down, cleaving him in two with his great axe. Redmaw once again looked at the younger commander, and smiled “Again I have misjudged you, though... I still say you wear red well. ” pointing out Buliwyf’s blood covered armour.

The Fall
As knowledge of these events reached the High Lords of Terra, they pondered long on whether to declare the remnants of the Lycan Excommunicate Traitoris, but deciding to follow the personal recommendation of Bran Redmaw, they were granted forgiveness, but, from then on they were commissioned to undertake an endless crusade, with no further assistance from Terra or any other imperial body, they were truly on their own.
Buliwyf was outraged by this degree had he not proven his loyalty, had he not expunged all traces of Chaos from his Chapter. Swearing that he would do all that was necessary to ensure the survival of his chapter he has from that day forwardwith righteous indignation, he has led his Chapter from conflict to conflict never once seeking aid from forces of the emperor.
At first the Lycan went wherever they could do the most good, but in recent years their presence has not necessarily aided Imperial forces where once there were report of Red clad warriors turning the tide of battle, now there are equal rumours of those same Red Warriors being more interested in pillage, either using stealth or force of arms they taking whatever resources they’ve required be they, munitions, equipment or even adulterant children, than in necessarily helping the forces of the Imperium.
Once again they are being considered with suspicion and others are quick to name them Traitors. They are a Chapter on the edge of the law, teetering on the brink of oblivion with one foot already on the path to Chaos despite their best efforts to avoid it.

I like the grey hunter!

Finally the first squad's complete, after many hours spent under a baking lamp, let alone the searing temperatures outside, unusual for the UK.

Again I kept the damage to a minimum, Grey Hunters don’t lend themselves to a lot space to apply damage once you’ve covered most of the torso with a weapon of one sort or another, any idea's would be appreciated.

The trial Wolf Guard I think worked out OK, full Desert Yellow helm and wolf pelt dapped over the body seems to suit these individuals, and he does stand out suitably from the pack. I’ve chosen brown pelts for the Wolf Guard, and grey/white for the characters.

The role of this unit it to hold an objective in my deployment zone, hence the Plasma Gun on the Grey Hunter, and the Storm Bolter on the Wolf Guard.

Once again your feedback would be appreciated and don't be frighten to criticism, come on lay it on.

They look really good, the red and bone-ish yellow work well. The wolf guard is great, simple yet effective. Would love to see the entire chapter when its completed.

I looked long and hard through the Spaces Wolves sprue's to identify a weapon suitably heroic for the first hero. I've always thought of axes as a brutal clumsy weapon, historical used by the much feared Vikings .

Later research reviled that not only were axes an effective combat weapon by generally weigh far less than wood splitting axes, because they were designed to cut legs and arms rather than wood, an axe is basically a wedge and lever that delivers a lot of force across a smaller surface. The result is that you had to be more accurate with an axe (only the head could cut), but that the blade of an axe deliveries more force and damage than a sword can strike with, consequently, deep, grievous wounds if not lose of life or limb.
Additionally, the axe is a versatile weapon, the handles of military axes were often reinforced with metal bands called langets, so that an enemy warrior could not cut the wooden handle. Some axes even had all-metal handles, consequently the long shaft can be used effectively in defence and the butt could be used offensively.
Axes are a brutal, close-quarter combat, killing weapons, just right for the Lycan.

The Terminator axe use ideal but an extension was needed to give the axe extra reach, increasing its length to suitably heroic proportions
Now the only problem I face is finding enough of them

What to do with this Drop Pod.

I have to admit that I've not had much fun painting it and now with only the final weathering to do I cannot wait to but it down, done, finished.

But even as it stands currently there's still something missing.


So now my friend I'm asking for your help, what to do. Please let me have you opinions

i love the posing on the wolf guard battle leader and i do belive that is the axe from the wg terminator box set ,very nice use of the gw plastic kits

Ok first off amazing work. I toyed around with doing a space wolves successor chapter before deciding to simply have a new lord replace one of the other Company wolf lords. but yeah i love the fluff and your pain job looks great. There are two things that i might suggest as far as the drop pod. The first is that it looks a little too clean for my taste especially where you indicate that the chapter is all alone and that their supplies are few and far between. If that is the case then wouldn't the drop pod have more scorch marks and battle damage and whatt not. But maybe that is just me. The other thing i would suggest is some sort of iconography on the wings. Maybe the morkain wolf or something. Those are just my thoughts take them for what they are worth.

I'd paint on black slashes on it, to represent the Lycan's feral nature. Make sure the slashes aren't battle damage but rather look as though the marines painted them on.

The paintings going a little slow at the moment,(its just too hot), so before I build too many unless troop here a army list to be going on with.

The bone is in fact Desert Yellow and from what I understand I'm using a darker red, but yes there are similarities, apart from Heraldry, pelts etc

Back from a wonderful holiday in Malta, and time still on my hand to finish my first Blood Claw unit.
This unit will eventually be mounted in a Rhino.

Attached to this unit is the Wolf Guard which has undergone minor Green Stuff, and modelling adaption.

Once again your feedback, good and bad would be appreciated.

I like them very much, make your own dex and add some inferno pistols.

Just managed to get my hands on some Sanguinary Guard Bits, legs, torso’s and axes and swords, oh and one backpack, my son got the rest.

Now I was thinking, I know its dangerous but, what would be the best mix, I’m thinking or making a Wolf Priest or two from these bit, suggestions would be appreciated on how to turn Blood Angle's into Wolves.

Having seen several of my non-BA playing friends buying the Sanguinary Guard kits and using the bitz to modify existing parts (and new parts) their armies, I can tell you which bits seem to univeresly fit ANY SM chapter.

The Good
-Powers Axes and Swords
-The 'jumping legs' (with BA markings filled off)
-Angelus Boltguns and wrist mounted weapons (they look very neat on Sgt's and Captains)
-Torsos. (with any BA biyz removed)

The Bad
-The single thrust back packs. (they always seem out of place without the wings, and with wings they don't suit any other army other than DA and 'angel' themed armies)

The single thrust back packs, might look OK on pre heresy marine.

Yeah, it might look half-decent on a pre-heresy marine. You should try and get at least 1 wrist mouted weapon from the Sanguinary Guard set as well.

Good idea, I've taken the Plasma Pistol and one bolter (leaving one unhappy son).

Good, good. Since you would like a wolf priest, I would suggest using the Plasm Pistol, the Angelus Boltgun can be given to another SM Sgt or vet. For the torso, the one with the scroll thing across his chest would seem to be most suited. For the power weapon (acrosius equiveant), the single sided axe (with the wing on the other side) seems most suited. As for legs, take your pick, they all look pretty neat. For the head, the one with the spikes looks most suited to being a Wolf Priest head.

I'm sure you son didn't need the guns you took, he has so many other guns/weapons to choose from, like hand flamers and melts pistols.

Make your own if you have extra bits.
