In the term I do 5 hours a week plus an hour or hour and 1/2 on satarday if I make the team for football/hockey.

Other than that I play the violin which, in an enclosed space at least feels like exercise!

Yes, yes I do. I've recently (about mid-April) started doing weight lifting. Nothing drastic, just build some muscle and stay fit. So far I'm dong real well!

@ Shuma- Yeah, I have that pudge too. I've heard that it can result from bad posture as your guts just sort of push up against that. Not sure if that is true though, haha.

I walk an hour to work each day, but thats it for exercise.
I guess I would get more done if my work shifts weren't awful, but I seem to be doing ok as it is.

Diet-wise I eat pretty healthy in general, so Im not fat or bony, just somewhere in between.

I go to the gym 3 times a week now. My new job has cut back on my exercise hours, so this summer I intend to get back into the groove of an hour plus a day. Diet is important too. Lots of veggies, not so much carbs, no crap from factories.

I cycle to and from work every day (9 miles) and do a long run (10-15 miles) on Sundays. I also do swim training once or twice a week. All of this is training for triathlons, although I should really be doing more if I want to get decent times rather than just making it round.

I also do running events (10K to Half Marathon) and I'm fairly pleased with Half Marathon PB of 01:33:58.

Cardio is not particularly effective for weight loss (don't get me wrong, it's still great for you). Keep up healthy diet, scale back the cardio a bit, add some resistance training, and don't give up. You've got this!

I've heard that as well. I'm largely a graphic/design/computer major so I spend a lot of time sitting down hunched over. If thats true then it's probably whats plaguing us.

You will do if you keep it up. Some resistance work would not hurt either.

@Ultrafool-

I agree with the resistance work because it will help you build more lean muscle mass which burns more calories at rest than fat does. Don't forgo the cardio but be sure to monitor your heartrate so you know you're doing aerobic vs. anaerobic exercise, they both have their place; however, aerobic is better for your purposes.

Best of luck and stay on it.

Cardio is good for the heart, but you don't lose weight or get stronger that way.

+3 to that. Spend a month riding a bike or running hard on a treadmill every day for 15-20 minutes (And I mean properly - to the point you can't feel your legs when you're done) and tell me you haven't lost any weight.

Aerobic exercise (cardio) is a necessary component of weight loss; however, more is needed if you want to see great results. Any cardio routine must be complemented by a strength training program that will increase lean muscle mass and supplement your weight-loss by increasing caloric consumption.
3-5 days per week of 20-30 minutes brisk cardio followed by circuit weight-training will produce results.

If you do 90 minutes hard cardio, you will burn 1000 calories.

How on earth is that not going to make you lose weight?

I know quite alot about this due to my former career, the PTI's used a formula to work out your maximum heart rate, its pretty common, 220 minus your age.

220-30 (age)=190 - My maximum HR

Now, granted fat burning cardio is a much lower level of intensity than hard cardio (your supposed to train below 60% MHR if i recall for fat burning) and i never used to bother using a heart rate monitor because i found jogging slowly on a treadmill to be boring as hell, but even if you dont train at a fat burning intensity, you will still burn gakloads of calories, so you will lose weight anyway because you will therefore need to eat more to maintain your current weight.

And regards the strength thing, thats just ridiculous. High reps low weight is known to build strong lean muscle, just not big muscle. Ill tell you how i know this one.

When i was stuck in Iraq we couldnt go running or anything, and we had the worst "gym" ever. It was literally a punch-bag some sand bags and a rowing machine.

My Troop sergeant suggested we "see how many times we can row around the world" during our 6 month tour, so every single damn day he forced us onto it to do 10,000 meters. You know the damn things im sure.. the "Concept 2"

Anyway, 10,000 meters at max resistance took me about 50 minutes first time i got on. I had it down to 39:00 by the end of the tour.

I could do 12 over arm heaves when i started, and about 1000000 disgustingly boring, soul crushing meters later, i could do 28.

I noticed a HUGE difference in my power and strength when i was rowing like a Greek slave, and my back and shoulders got visibly larger.

And i hate them fething machines.

Aye mate, but it IS cardio.

So its flat out wrong to say that cardio doesnt make you stronger because loads of it involves resistance right?

Swimming, Cross training, running up hills, cycling, they all involve resistance, some on more muscles than others, but that means cardio can make you stronger!

I used to power lift when I was in Highschool. But I havnt touched a weight in a few years. So Ive gotten soggy. But I have been getting the itch to get back at it again. So someday Ill just wake up and get a gym membership and do it again. Would be nice, Im starting to notice Ive gained to much weight lately, and thats never a good sign. I cant hide EVERYTHING behind a beard

Indeed, its very rare to find any single sort of exercise which involves only cardio, strength training, metabolic aspiration, etc. In general exercise programs are classified by their focus, not their sole effect.

Also, if you want to lose weight its a simple matter of burning more calories than you consume. There are other variables as well, regarding what you consume and how you burn calories, but so long as you burn more energy than you take in you will lose weight. If you want to gain weight, even muscle, the inverse applies.

The key thing to remember, in terms of metabolizing fat, is that your body only does so when your blood as fully saturated with oxygen. You don't burn fat while you're exercising, you burn it while your resting after exercising; primarily during sleep. That said, it is possible for people who are in very good shape to maintain oxygen saturation of their blood during moderately strenuous workouts, and that can allow them to burn fat while engaging in nominally intense activities. This is a big part of why people like Michael Phelps can eat anything they want, without ever gaining body fat, while professional football players, with similar nutritional requirements, cannot do the same; they simply cannot keep their blood-oxygen level high enough (due to an overabundance of muscle fiber) to allow for the metabolism of fat.

I'm currently on a low carb diet as i try to lose the 2 stone I've put on since moving back to Chester. Seems to be working, although the no booze rule is a bit tough :(

Been playing Squash 3 times a week for an hour each session too. I was told that squash is one of the best sports for burning off calories and is just good exercise in general. Is this true? Or is someone having a laugh at my expense?

I hear that mate, i train hard and i eat well, and then it gets to a weekend and its 30 pints and a kebab.

I really need to leave the booze alone, its expanding my waist rapidly.

Ever since i hit 30 i only have to look at a crate of beer and my arse jiggles for a fortnight.

Anything involving rapid changes of direction over an extended period of time will tear through calories as you're muscles have to work far harder to counter your momentum than they do when in the process of sustaining it.
