You just killed any liking i had for shrike with that comment
But paint wise, its looking great.

Glad your back to painting now though.

Ive had time to get some painting done for once on snikch!
Also had enough time (ok, finished it at 5am) to get a HPA done.
Just needs paint now.

I hate to be that guy, but honestly shrikes ok and a average table top standard. You would have a easier time with the white, and find more effect out of your painting if you primed in white. The reason being colors primed in black do not show the true color you are painting as they do in white. Also the black is extremely glossy you have on him. Your stuff is alright and clean I will pay you that complement, but like I said not amazing.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

I think if the black wasn't so glossy, it would look soooo much better.
But it is definatley above tabletop standard.

You must play in an area where 'tabletop' means something other than, well, 'tabletop'!

I think this Shrike is a notch or two above tabletop!

Its been glossed purposefully for this guy, ardcoat watered down.

Im deffo going to try out priming white when I get a chance to work on something spare that I dont mind wrecking. In general I can see it be a lot easier to get stronger pastel and pale shades using it, but a bit less forgiving when it comes to mistakes or problems with paint thickness.

I guess it will be a whole new way to learn to paint.

Edit: As a note, gloss tends to look pretty bad in photos, at least any I take do anyway. I have a feeling its because of the lighting I use. To see him in normal electric room light or day light, its quite a bit less overpowering then it is with a whitelight directly aimed at it. Ill try to take some at normal lighting tomorrow to see if I can show what Im trying to explain

I'd apply a coat of matte varnish so it won't be as glossy, but still be protected against the elements.

It doesnt have gloss to protect it, its a commission and was part of it Only on the black armor parts. Ill try and get less horridly stark lit pics when I get up for sure.

Ah no Munch Munch I didnt mean that in a way you should apologise for, just explaining a bit of method behind the madness.

I took these two just now. Why I am up at 7.30 taking shots of a toy soldier is beyond me, but it shows what I meant about the armor not being as in the flesh.

I was thinking about it last night and if people still think the shine detracts from the armor, what I can do is quite easily repaint the plates and offer the owner the choice when he collects, its not like painting on watered ard coat is hard to do afterall

I love the colour contrast on your ravenguard, I might only prefer the leather tassels to be painted in browns or other earth colours, but overall great palette

Thanks for the advice Armorum Ferrum, it's what I joined the site for

I have sent pics to the owner, if he is happy to go ahead as it is, I will keep the colouring, if not I will be neutralising it a bit, toning down the colours used.

Maybe try a brownish gold tassle instead for sure.

May be random, but have you thought about grey priming?

While white helps with light shades, it is also very unforgiving to even the slightest mistake.
Black is great for pre-shading and adding highlights, but also darkens the whole model and makes light colours a real pain in the ass for multi-coats.

Grey however gives you the best of both worlds with less problems ive found.
allways primed grey, never had any real problems.
The only exception to this was snikch, but thats simply because i wanted him shadowed and dark.

Also, the glossy look isnt bad, makes it stand out alot and look more ceramic, rather than flat.

Update from the owner: He wants to keep it as it is, so not going to be repainting the plates or tassle, though I might darken the tassle rope down a bit to finish it off.

Jack, that could indeed be something to test out. I just need to get some spare time where I am not justy doing commission work and can work on something silly for myself, I have tons of eldar and HE's that a white -grey prime on would be fun to use.

Hopefully I have 3 days completely free this weekend, so fingers crossed for that. Still have my Khorne knights to get going!

He is indeed, from the same owner.

Plan for him is to basically keep him the same as Shrike palette wise, but I'm going to be giving him very small amounts of burnt gold trim on some of his detailing, whereas Shrike is all silvers when it comes to metallics, bar his darkened parts on the back of his jetpack.. thing.

Thanks Scipunk.

This thread has done wonders for my moral painting wise, and I have had some really good critique feedback which is great.

I've learned a lot from working on Shrike as he is my first Showpiece standard SM, so I am looking forward to putting what I have learned into Korvydae, hopefully he will move along faster and turn out better

Looking really nice, I tried white for a while, but found it extremely painful. Took far too long to get a white scar painted :S

I think so many people are in love with shrike is the idea of fleeting terminators and the like as well.

Keep up the pics!

He is all finished now, so I will get some pics up tonight.

Will be starting on Korvydae either tonight or tomorow, and getting the metals done on my Knights.

Thinking of white priming a random plastic too and trying it out, have a good few lieing around.

What should be my first attempt, Orc, He, Nid, Beastman, Chaos war or Sm?

I would go Beastman, there aren't many Beastman blogs kicking around on Dakka.

In my experience... white priming usually helps "light up" a figure... so whatever you choose should have a bright color scheme in order to take advantage of the primer. Bad Moon ork, slanesh chaos, any brightly colored marine, the right nid. Just make sure the fig isn't so "busy" that you lose your ability to assess the effect of the primer on it's overall look.

LOL... yeah... that would do it!

Though, if you really wanted to explore what the white primer did for you vs. your norm, you should paint a figure very similar to one you already have using your normal primer, that way you can set the two side-by-side and make your assessment with clear examples.

Thanks all.

He is all done now and being collected tomorow.

Just going to repaint the claw tips to get rid of wear, and there is a slightly wonky white line on his right fist that a spec of paint will fix up.
Starting on Korvydae tonight, and went through what I have available for my white prime test model, seems I have a lot more boxed models then I originally thought

Agreed. It looks pretty great in its finished state, nice clean white with just enough contrasting colours to break up the black and white dominance.

Very nice!
