Yep, pretty standard russ.
The wheels go in between both halves of the track units.
They are spacers as well as rests for the track pieces.
@Zeshin: Nope, plastic sponsons. They have a squared off front, the old metal ones were angled at front and back.
15 years old isn't 'old'.
(Although it probably IS older than you)

The kit hardly changed for years, only the recent Russ is a new sculpt and it's still very similar, so no collectable value as such. The accessories sprue is different though, different dozer blade and the hunter killer missile is in a long box.

The mould was definately tired out when eventually retired, how many Rhinos must they have churned out over the years?

When did they drop the old rhino? I know they still had the old chassis vindicator in 2004 (how to paint space marines), so I guess it was only a few years before that...

Did this come with the 2nd ed stats? Replace ONE sponson Heavy Bolter with a Heavy Flamer.
Those were crazy days back then, crazy!

Transports were death traps "back in the day".
I honestly can't remember if battle tanks fared much better, but somehow I doubt it!

It has completely silly rules. This was 2nd edition, and the leman russ has a separate tank treads damage chart... wtf....And yes, you can replace ONE heavy bolter with a Hflamer.
Also, there was no hull mounted heavy bolter. You were forced to take a lascannon.
I don't usually take lascannons, and I glued it on the model, so I guess It's just a fancy antennae now.

Haha, this is somewhat strange for me coming back into the hobby after ten years this 'old' Leman Russ is all I've known! (got three along with an old chimera and hellhound) I had to look up what was different with the new one.
I still remember chopping one of the battle cannons off and attaching two auto cannons from an old Ork attack bike to make the 'Exterminator' version when the new (3rd edition) codex came out.
My chimera was the dedicated transport for my suicidal blob squad and quite often was it's tomb, transports were indeed very risky. Can't say the same for the battle tank, he always earnt his points back. On reflection though I was the only guard player at my club and the rest were marines with one Ork and Nid player, this may well have aided my string of tournament victories!

Well, that's because 2nd Edition WAS a different game.
The Leman Russ was among the first few models I ever bought, way back when it was only a few years old (and still $30 to $35). In all honesty, the new kits are pretty much the exact same save for the accessory sprue, and in my opinion, the old kit was superior (at least in that you had a lot you could do with the same model).
When GW finally decided to redo the Leman Russ and Chimera chassis, I was a bit hopeful (though not foolish) that they would do something interesting and dynamic, something that would be very similar to the (then) current models but more refined (like what they did from the old Rhino to the new one). Instead we got pretty much the exact same thing, save for some this and that.... it would have at least made the older Russes more interesting and fluffy, with the new ones a "Mars" pattern or something like that.... C'est la vie.

Eh...I don't really agree. The tracks are such a pain on this old one, and they made the front bumper thing better.....Not to mention the swapable sponsons and stuff....The turret looks better on the new one too...
But with a glance, they're basically the same model anyway...

Okay, I will definitely agree that having ALL the weapons options in the kit is much better (I forgot about that one). The old track system is really frustrating the first couple of times putting it together (trust me, I know!), but you get the hang of it. If you are a converter, modeler, or just like tinkering with the thing, you can find a lot of other uses for the extra tracks and wheels (you only need like half the ones they give you). You can also make some pretty neat mods. Like for my Russes I now have exposed road wheels (the wheels), and built in track guards, simply by cutting the rings in half on the tank sides and bumping the wheels down on them. Makes the tank sit more realistically, and adds another layer of intrigue to the design, I think.

You think the rules for the tank are crazy, you should look at the old rules for bikes. Each bike was an individual vehicle, with different damage charts for areas and everything. Units of bikers were incredibly complicated, especially if you had a character in there too. And hand to hand combat worked completely differently.
It was kinda fun, but man, was it unbalanced.

Death trap is putting it mildly. The bonus D6 armour pen in CC meant you only had to knock on the hatch a bit too hard, to turn a Rhino into a hurtling ball of flames. And the damage table was usually unkind. I seem to remember it being something like... "Roll a D6, if the result is 3 or more, everyone on board is killed with no armour save possible... gutted!"
Though I seem to recall the Leman Russ being a bit more potent. I remember one totally owning my Dev squad. I only managed to get out one volley of 4 krak missiles, but didn't even scratch it. Then it blew the squad to pieces, using smoke launchers to prevent me getting another LOS. Pretty expensive though,

The frontal armour on a Russ was very high, front armour on the turret particularly so and was over 20 - Armour penetration rules were somewhat different but to put it in perspective it was the highest for any vehicle in the game that I recall and probably double that of a Rhino.
On the whole I preferred 2nd edition to those that came later. While the vehicles rules could have been improved, especially for bikes, the step taken for 3rd edition was too far in the other direction. The beginning of the dumbing down of the game IMO.
Damage tables were a single generic one for all vehicles, no location damage of any sort. Vehicle movement was a joke, vehicle turning no longer counted against total movement distance meaning vehicles could zig-zag all over the place. They dumped the movement characteristics so everyone moved the same distance, loads of stuff was neutered with genestealers greatly reduced in close combat efficiency and terminator armour much less effective, all the fun stuff like vortex grenades was gone, they dumped the psychology rules like fear, stupidity and frenzy and just introduced 'tank shock' instead. Yuk, and some of the armies were overhauled so as to ruin lots of things, the orks lost loads of stuff like the Shokk Attack gun (which they've had the sense to reintroduce finally), snotling swarms and madboys.
3rd edition ruined 40K for me, it reeked of everything that I see wrong with the company now, the fast-selling dumbing-down get-the-kiddies-in-fast stuff.

i loved it when they got out of control and were turning and driving in random directions(especially when moving with high speed)

I have to agree with Howard, I've not yet shelled out for a copy of the new rules but reading around here I get a 'jist' of it.
It certainly seems to have gotten less quirkier, 2nd to 3rd was a massive change, I still remember missing the psychic phase. As much as transports were death traps back then there's easily an argument that currently having the tank your sitting in blown up is nothing more than a mild inconvenience!
As much as I loved vortex grenades and the such I can't say it didn't help 'balance' the game with their removal, a moving template which instagibbed anything it touched was hilarious but quite often nullified tactics.
In fact when I start my threat on scavvies I might just take photos of all my old stuff in the loft that's been untouched for 10 years, might be some interesting finds I've forgotten about!

It's funny how a topic about an old Leman Russ has got people reminissing about the "good ol' days"... Which I never obviously knew - being rather young when this tank was made an' all. I think GW killed it for me was when they totally blinged the Ultrasmurfs to death. GOLD, shiny GOLD and glittering DARK BLUE armour hurr! Some ten years after this tank was made... Ultras should be ULTRAMARINES BLUE with RED Boltguns and YELLOW Company markings and hazard stripes and... WAAAA!!!

I picked up one of those just as they were taking them off the shelves (last year?).
I got it PURELY for the tracks and wheel sprues - much more useful for making tanks than the rest of it.
The rest got donated to my club's bits box as I don't actually like the lemon ruski. I've always thought it hideous. Even in 2nd ed, when it was new and gave hideous a new face.

He picked it up in Davis at Bizarro world yes?
Well at least it went to a good modelist =)
There was an old basilisk as well, the owner had found some imperial jetbikes and I snatched them up.
