Wow, without seeing this I have primed my entire army grey and given it a badab black wash. I may try this technique and see what results it gives me with the grey instead of the white primer color.

Thanks for sharing these awesome pics!

They certainly do!! I got sidetracked with some biker nob conversions. I need to get a BW and convert it up.

Some suggestions: Put the DE aethersails (orkified) on the BWs, and buy Kaptin Badrukk.

I have a few models for the crew - will post when they show up.

I just bit ordered the sails and bits from a raider hull - my plan is to use the truck chasis ans FW half tracks for the base. Ill use bits from the raider and ravager sails to complete the top part.

Ive made the Captain's Wheel already out of a Screaming Bell Wheel and some bits from the trukk sprue. Ive made a few Jolly Ork's (skull and crossbones) to be used to decorate the Crows Nest and to serve as the ships flag as well.

I like your ideas/methods on painting (white primer followed by Badab Black wash and then color washes), and I think I'll be trying them out on my Alpha Legion marines - I think it will work quite well!

Also, glad to see another Massachusetts resident on Dakka - maybe we'll be able to get a game in once I've got my force up to snuff.

What's your LGS?

I wanted to post my painting technique for the Ork Boyz - Ive had a few requests for a tutorial....

The process is fast because of the washes - they go on super quick. A tip - use as big a brush that you can painting the boltgun metal and washes. It speeds things up. I use a 2 IMEX No. 9722. Clean them constantly. For the black and white checks, use a tiny one. The slowest part of the process is painting the boltgun metal parts and waiting for the washes to dry. Im not kidding. The only actual paint on the models are the primer coat, boltgun metal and the black and white checks. Everything else is an ink wash. I made some mistakes on the 3rd batch of 8 orks. I thought highlighting them with Snot Green was a good idea - it isnt, stick with the inks, just add another coat.

This was a departure from my normal painting techniques. Ive been painting for 7 years and never once used white as a primer nor used washes. I tested a few out though and was happy. The key is the black wash phase. This goes on before other washes. I know that sounds backwards but it works. When working with building up layers of washes, starting with black first is the right move. It shadows and highlights the model first. Backwards I know.

Get a good complete white primer base. Cover the whole model.

Paint the metal bits boltgun metal - dont dry brush them, paint them solid as well as any other metal colored bits. Clean up any overspills into the white with white. Let dry.

Paint the whole model with black wash. Double check there arent any white spots you missed. Let dry completely. Dont go too heavy on the black but not too light either. Too dark and the follow-on colors have a hard time showing through. Too light and they dont look Orky enough. Simply use a "heavy brush" once and let dry. The drier the wash gets the darker it looks. At first you wont think you have enough color on the model. It'll be fine.

Paint the skin with Thraka Green wash. Let dry completely. For Ork Nobs, give them a second or third coat of Green after the first is dry. They look stronger this way I think.

Paint the clothes (not the boots, gloves, axe handles) with Gryphonne Sepia. This is by far my favorite ink. It leaves the model mottled with different shades of brown all with a simple brush stroke. Let dry. On a few I used Ogryn Flesh to mix things up.

Paint the boots, gloves, axe handles, poles etc with Devlan Mud. Another good wash and sometimes on the bigger models Ill "highlight" areas painted in Sepia with Mud. Again to make them look stronger. Let this dry completely. Again, sometimes I used Ogryn Flesh to mix things up.

Accent the models for variety if you like. I washed the top knots of hair and caps blue, purple or red. I continued this into the Banners if there were knots or rags on them as well.

Paint the base to suit your taste. I went old school to start. Its simple and quick. I wouldnt paint them green though. Later Ill go back and finish them proper.

For the black and white checkering there is no secret or quick way to do it. I recommend you start a few with big checks to get your confidence up. Paint a swatch white, let dry and then add black squares over it. I found that if I was getting sloppy, if I went and painted small ones on helmets or guns and then went back to shoulders - they came out cleaner. Kind of like remedial training. Get creative with this - before you know it you'll be painting them diagonal or 3 or 4 rows deep. Getting the free-floating checks squared up is a bit challenging at first. Just go back with white and clean them up later - after (you guessed it) it dries completely.

Great painting technique, I have always painting very slowly using layering until the last year or so. Using lots of coloured washes is nice and speedy and controllable and. I haven't tried the greytone base before, your results are very convincing, so i'll have to give it a go. Of course your conversions are excellent and I'm terribly jealous.

Ive made progress on the Pirate Ship/Battle Wagon. I added a few anchors to the hull. The painting is still in its phase 1 stage so understand that there's still lots of work to be there. I wanted you to see where I was going with it though.

The knife looking bits on the left will be formed to make a prow - Ill spike a Dark Eldar to it for decoration.

The WAAAGH Banner will be posted at the top of the Mast (smoke stack in the center) - It looks like a Jolly Ork - I mean Jolly Roger.

The Dark Eldar Raider Sails will be posted forward and aft - I havent yet figured out how Ill incorporate the forward sail so it doesnt intervene with the Prow or the Cannon.

I have a few Ravager Sails coming - Im hoping to rig a Main Sail out of them.

I may not have a main mast and just go with a smoke stack. I dont think it really needs sails.

Have you allready tought about the rules for da ship? Maybe use it as a battle fortress?

Wot's faster than a warbuggy, more killy than a warbike and flies through da air like a bird?
-I got no bleedin' idea but I'm gonna find out!

Hmm - Ive been thinking of it as a Battlewagon primarily. The obvious problem with that are all the weapons I have on it. The prow of the ship Ill use as a reinforced ram. The guns will represent friing ports (its open topped so I should be able to get away with that. I have a cannon thats removable - sometimes Ill use it as a kill kannon or kannon. I dont think I can use it as a battlefortress due to its size - its got the same footprint as a GW battlewagon - though it is taller. It could pass as one maybe. I can use it as a Battle Fortress, Battle Wagon or Looted Wagon. I do need to model a Big Shoota on it somewhere.

I like the Battle Fortress idea - I hadnt thought of that. Thanks!!

I love the prow, and think the sail was a good addition. I think it's coming along very nicely. I'm still in the add-a-mainsail camp, though

It looks great. We never get sick of Ork Pirates around here. I really like how the greyscale turned out.

My only comment would be to drill your barrels.
