I started 40k with the Orkz and have yet to be anywhere near bored with them! I have started a marine army, but they currently have nothing on the Orkz in how enjoyable they play!

Hmm.. well i started my 40k world with the eldar (I didn't start playing till this year so i've never actually played them). I had built them up to:

-16 man guardian squad w/ support platform
-5 man wraith guard squad
-vyper
- 2 attack bikes

But i start painted space marines after i while and never really turned back. I really enjoy the space marines. They were my first to play with but maybe i'll give my eldar a go.

Started 2nd Edition with Orks, and the remained my main army through 3rd. Stopped playing, sold everything for a move to the other side of the planet, missed 4th, came back after 5th - and are back to Orks! Everything I loved about them before, now with more cool minis! Though I am concentrating more on the painting and conversion these days than I did previously...

For me, my current army is always my favorite, and my favorite changes every few months

My first was space marines, loved em back in the day ('93ish), then moved to Eldar and loved them too but they got old and I sold em 3 or 4 years ago, but now I miss them. Out of all the armies I've had though I think the one that's been my favorite the most is imperial guard.

In Warhammer yes, Dark Elves where the first complete force I ever had, and I've always held them above all others.
Even when I've stopped playing Warhammer twice in the past, when I've come back its been the first army I've gone for.

In 40k theres not got the same hold from my first army for some reason, my first army was either Orks, Eldar or Thousand Sons.
I can't pinpoint which one because although I owned lots of 2nd edition stuff, Warhammer was the game I played the most up until 4th edition. That might be part of the reason if I'm honest, because even though I like all three armies, none of them would be my fave.

My fave 40K army for a long time now has been the Imperial Guard. Its actually a bugbear of mine that I don't currently own one.
Although I'm not willing to put the money down on a new one until my loan is paid off in summer 2012. At which point I plan on doing a large force.

Maybe not H.B.M.C large, but big enough.

Regardless of their codex's capabilities (or lack thereof) I will always be a necron fanboy.

Though I still love my deldar and CSM. Though just not as much.

I think my first army (orks) will always have a special place with me, probably because they remind me of being 12, innocent times, playing on the garage floor, making cheapo trukks outa popsicle sticks. Its like pulling the nes out and hooking up the power glove, makes you feel like a kid again. There fluff is also what drew me in in the first place.

My Dark Eldar were my first army. I lost, and lost, and lost to those Space Marines and their 'Speeder that came in the 3rd Ed starter. And as I expanded and learned to play, became a bit of a force to be reckoned with. I've bounced around to almost every other army since then, and sold them off as I went, except for those pointy heads. And while the change of pace and shallower learning curve of the other armies was interesting for a bit, none of them ever really stick with me. I wind up dragging out my tissue-paper boats full of Sadomasochists to pillage once more.

Even if I have a ton of fun with my following armies, yeah, my first is still my favorite.

I never found DE that challenging to play. Pretty point and click with the super cheap heavy weapons and ability to spam them. Then again, I only ever played them in 5th.

I don't think your first army is always your favorite. My first army was Tau, and they hella suck now and just aren't very interesting since they only play in one phase of the game.

Then I moved to Eldar at the end of third, but my aliatioc disruption table went away and while the 25 pathfinder list was good briefly in 5th ed, once everybody meched up it became pretty useless.

I finally settled on a DIY marine force w/ bikes, and I haven't looked back. Got about 300 marines now, and no tau, although I still have all my Eldar.

I'm always loyal to my first two armies, of course.

But the joy of the game is in the expansiveness of it. When I go to my LGS I'm always asking if I can play other people's armies.

I tried necrons, didn't like them, but now I'm into orks. I like them too, but theres just something about those spiky, evil marines. What are your experiences with this?

I go both ways on this. My very first 40K army was Blood Angels, mostly because they were in the 2nd Edition box, but I have absolutely no desire to play them again. I'd say my most recent army (tau) are my favorite, but I do keep finding myself sucked into Salamanders (my 3rd edition army) every once in a while if I find some old Space Marine bitz in my box. I'm a fluff monkey too an extent and my favorite fluff army would be the Thousand Sons, but I've never really had an army of them, as far too many members of my gaming groups over the years had been Chaos players.

Other in the land of square bases, my first army was Undead, back before the idiotic split into Vampire Counts and Tomb Kings, and I'd say that Tomb Kings, being the most direct descendants are still my favorite WFB army (although, as a big fan of Arthurian lore, Bretonnia is way up there also)

My first 40k army was Dark Angels (I started in 5th edition, so I don't even have a good excuse), and I threw together a few squads of AoBR Terminators. I quickly realized that they sucked, and started on Tau (In my defense, all of my enemies were Space Wolves and Blood Angels, so I got sick of my codex being worse in EVERY way). I built up a bunch of Tau, about 2000 Points. Then, on a whim, I started Eldar. They seemed cool, but they couldn't hold my interest. Although I won't sell them, I will probably regain interest in them eventually. Now I'm adding some land raiders and more terminators to the Dark Angels and intend to play them some more to try a "kill me if you can" strategy (I've actually yet to see a single melta weapon at my FLGS other than my Fire Dragons, which is weird. I'm sure the IG guy has some, but I've never played him.)
Edited for Clarity.
Edit: Strike the melta comment, I actually faced some CSM bikes with melta once.

I think it's like asking a parent which one of their children is their favourite.

In my case: It's NOT the redheaded one. That one isn't mine.

j/k. I have no children, nor would I wish any upon my worst enemies.

I alternate amongst my FOUR armies (I cannot collect any more than this for 40k - I do not like any of the remaining enough to want to collect them). Each one gets a turn out of the cupboard. They are all my favourites (otherwise I would not play them).

You always remember your first though.

Well my first army was SM from the starter set for 3rd edition.

Quickly sold them off and get IG, specifically Catachans. The rules always confused me.

Fast forward to now. Still have all the Catachans I had, just have added in 4 chimeras, 2 hellhounds, and a Demolisher, along with a few things here and there, and I love them. It will be an army that I will collect forever probably. I won't be able to play them all once when I am "done", but it will so be worth it.

I will probably start a BT army soon, or maybe something when the new Daemonhunters codex comes out. Only Xenos army that keeps my attention is Tau, but only because the rest are too common on the table.

I started with Blood Angels for 40K, and ended up playing Orks. (Recently back to Marines (crimson fists) after playing DoW revitalised my interest.)
I started with Lizardmen in Fantasy, and ended up with a ginormous Orc army and no Lizardmen.
I started with cygnar in Warmahordes, and ended up with trollbloods!
Yeah, I think I'm bad at picking an army on the first try!

Started 40K with the IG and still play them as my only army. Briefly tried the Nids but hated them and they sat in a box, forgotten till a friend wanted them.
Lately the IG have begun to frustrate me and I feel like my time with them might be coming to a close.

I began with the Eldar, and quickly shifted off those to the Imperial Guard after I grew tired of losing due the unforgiving nature of the Eldar with mistakes, and have never regretted that.

Played the Guard until I took a break, and decided to play marines when I came back about 6 months ago.

However, as others have stated, even if I quite enjoy the Space Marine fluff, the popularity of marines meaning battles become Marines versus Marines at least 50% of the time is beginning to wear on me. In a month or two, it might be time to look into playing a new army, but I doubt it'll be Eldar, I've gotten past my enjoyment of elves.

For Warhammer, I began squarebasing with Dwarfs, and have loved every minute of it.

First army was 2nd edition Eldar...current Eldar don't do too much for me, but those old Banshees, Scorpians and god-like Eldrad Ulthran still have a place in my heart.

After a long break I played 4th ed Guard and if I hadn't lost them all (seriously...great tragedy) I'd probably be playing them in 5th ed as well. I love the Leman Russ and Bassie more than anything else in 40k.

The first thing i played was WHFB wen i was but a lad. Had the box so i had High Elves and my brother had Orks and Goblins. Played that for a while and then stopped playing. Never played WHFB since though i may like to at some point.

I got into 40k back at the start of 4th Edition and collected space marines, mainly after playing DoW. I thought id paint a dreadnaught cos they were cool, then i got a few more models, so did my mate and the army built from there i guess. I then painted up the genestealers he had with battle for maccrage and had about 800pts of nids.

We stopped playing until summer this year when i picked it up again after reading the newer HH novels. Ive added to both armies but i just cant get into Nids as much as marines. I love the tyranid models i just dont get the feeling that im commanding my forces like i do with marines. It sorta feels like im just moving mindless bugs around the table. When i play marines i get a sense of being the general and leading my forces to victory.

So i guess my favourite will be my first 40k army. I have about 3000pts of SM and 1500pts of tyranids all painted. I quite fancy IG but couldnt imagine painting that many dudes again. Ill prob add to my SM forever as my friend has a big army so the bigger we make them the bigger battles we can have!
