Is your first army always the one you love to play with the most? Or do you prefer your later armies? I love my CSM the most, as they were my first. I tried necrons, didn't like them, but now I'm into orks. I like them too, but theres just something about those spiky, evil marines. What are your experiences with this?

Not always. My first army was regular, boring Space Marines that I'm considering selling to make a WoC army or expand my Dark Eldar or buy some sort of FotM army.
My first fantasy army, O&G, is still my favorite however.

Well, back around 1997 I started buying and painting SM form the local games/comics store. I had all the old Khorne beserkers, as well as many others. However, I didnt own the actual game, had no idea what it was really about until several years later.

Ive been through many armies...SM ( a couple times), old Necrons, Tau, SoB, CSM, new Necrons...even have a small spattering of Orks and Eldar at the moment.

Somehow I always end up back at SM and CSM.

Whats my game?

I started with nids and really didnt enjoy it, I now have an Orks and Dark Eldar army depending on what mood I am in and love them both to bits.

Definitely not, in my case. I started with Space Marines, then tried Orks, and finally Necrons, and Necrons are far and away my favorites.

No. Orks were my first army since the previous edition of Codex Orks. Now, I just want to forget about my orks and keep them stacked in a box. Whenever I make an ork list, I got at least around eight boys/nobz, and about 4 to 5 vehicles. And then I haven't used everything I got! Taking all these models to the local gaming store INTACT is a paine in the arse.

I will always love the guard though. They were my second army. I know, a guard army has a lot of models too, but at least they are not UBER BULKY like my orks who don't fit in the gaps in my transport case.
transport reasons and many others make me wanting to forget about my orks.

Sw were my from 2nd edition and still are. That ragnar, Njar and ulrick model made me buy SW. Apart from the size those 3 models have stood the test of time.
Yes i still play SW even now. I have had other armies (BT, UM, Chaos, BA etc) but my main army is still SW

My first army was Eldar in 2nd edition, my 2nd army was Chaos Space Marines- Iron Warriors in 3rd-4th edition.

I still have a soft spot for Eldar, I have not played them in years, and CSm always is interesting. However, I'm not really excited to play either. My "main army" is Skaven, they were my 4th WFB army, they are the army that I best identified with as I like randomness and horde style play.

Let's see...First army was Space Wolves back in 2nd edition. Don't really care for them all that much (Granted, don't play 40k any more anyways).

For Fantasy, my first army was Lizards. I find them kinda boring to play. I really perfer my Dark Elves (I wanted them to be my second army for fantasy, but never bought them until fairly recently) and Warriors.

My first army was blood angels back in 2nd edition, they were fun, but I dont think I would ever play em again

Second army was Dark Eldar in 3rd & 4th edition, I loved those crazy bastards

My newest army are the nids here in 5th edition. While I love the idea, I dont really like how they play in this edition.

So, to answer your question...no. It seems to me that the first army is usualy picked based on how the army looks, but after you learn how to play, and become more knowledgable of the universe and the game system, then you start picking armies you will actualy like to play with.

After 20 years of play in the hobby, I have developed the following outlook,

It's (Warhammer) a transitory world, and that's whats great about it!

This is not an easy concept to wrap ones mind around, but it is true, and if you embrace it, as a long time player, you will enjoy the game much more.

This outlook precludes that you have the resources and discipline to have multiple armies, many don't. I completely sympathize with those who have had their armies invalidated etc.

But if you can embrace the changing world of Warhammer then every new release, and every new rules change just presents a new frontier of dynamic landscape.

I think because of the expense barrier to entry many folks who are newer with a 1st army assume the mindset of that's all that should ever be needed. Indeed creating a filled out painted army probably costs a $1000 and if one sets that up as the final goal, it may prove disappointing when the rules change, but, if one has multiple armies, and embraces the changing landscape, it's just an opportunity to go a new direction!

Usually a player identifies with a first army like no others, but try and think of the game as a dynamic changing landscape not one set in stone from when you created your first army, and you'll be setting yourself up for years of fun!

Slann were the "army" that first attracted me, so you can see how old I am.

However, Slann never really went anywhere as an army, so at the end of 1st/beginning of 2nd I decided to build SM. Then during 2nd ed. I got the Tyranid bug (pun intended) a little, although it didn't come to real fruition until about 2000 or so. Then I played Tyranids pretty much exclusively until about 2007, when I started building my Genestealer Cult (count as Orks). Played them for a few years. Since the release of the new Tyranid codex, I've been playing them exclusively again. I'll probably start up with the GCult again around midyear or so.

So in my case, there's no real first love or anything. Mostly I've jumped around as my tastes have changed, codices are released, etc.

Although if I had enough of the old Slann models to do a counts-as army, all bets might be off.

Not at all. Orcs and Goblins were my first army. I don't like them at all.

Though I suppose WoC was my first "serious" army, and them I still like very much. But I like my Beastmen more.

Not sure which technically counts as my first army. I love the Dark Angels but I played them as a second choice due to the lack of squ-inquisition censored- But now as I have Dwarfs for fantasy I'm not sure. I love them both I guess, then again its across systems so I'm not sure if it counts. I've spent a ton of time refining the fluff, albeit stretching canon as much as I could get away with, of the DA so I guess they are still the favorite in terms of how much time I've put into them. Then again, I've gotten 18 dwarfs painted in a little over a week, not well mind you just enough that there isn't a gray blob on the table, while I may have painted 50 DA and a vehicle in the past year. Not including the stuff I've worked on for others.

Meh, I'm really not sure. I think I like them equally.

I don't like my first army. My first army ever was some badly painted Ultramarines, and my first army I played 40k with was my Dark Angels. I can't stomach the old paintjobs. I don't play with my third army, my Space Wolves, that often either.

Actually I pretty much just play Guard and Chaos Marines now. Hrk.

My first army was Ultramarines. (In the beakie plastic set days).

I have tried every army except for Orks.

I am currently working on Demons and Imperial Fists.

My current work horse army is space wolves.

I love them all. Big heartbreaks for me were:

5th edition melee rules/wound allocation changing the landscape significantly.
Invalidation of ALL my Eldar builds with the last Eldar codex.
The last marine codex changing (invalidating all my 5 man las plas squads).
The death of the entire Lost and the Damned army.
The new Tyranid codex killing my Nidzilla army dead

Like many, I started with Space Marines and really enjoyed them for a number of years in different incarnations of my army (different codices, themes), but eventually I grew tired of their popularity, which limited my experience to watching battles essentially being Space Marines fighting something else (usually other Space Marines).

After a while, I sold my Marines and built a custom Imperial Guard army and I've been completely happy ever since. The non-super-elite feel of the army appeals a lot more to me, and themes can really be shown well in guardsmen. I recently started a small Dark Eldar army to play against my Guard, or simply when I'm in the mood to use them. They're quite fun so far but I think Guard will always be more core army from now on.

My first army was Khador for Warmachine. I still have them and love to play with them. I tried the other factions (except the elf one... I forget what its called).

For 40k I started with Space Marines and still have a place for them in my heart. I've sold my first Space Marine army but I'm coming up with another one.

for 40k, i started with vanilla marines, but using the same models, am able to play a much fluffier army using the wolves codex... i have also branched out into guard and Nids. The nids are shelved for awhile due to other projects (including a new paint scheme for the nids, luckily for them not too many were painted in the first place)

for fantasy, i "started" with dark elves, though 3/4ths of them are still in the battalion box, on the sprue. I just lost a large part of my interest in them for some reason, they are quite spindly and thin... Now, i am in the middle of an Ogre Kingdoms kick, and hoping that a new army book is around the corner, and that the new book when/if it comes out doesnt hurt them too much... the Ogres are much beefier models and fun to assemble/paint, plus they provide plenty of opportunity to try new techniques with their large painting surfaces.

blech no. My first army was Marines. Later I read the fluff and decided I was disgusted by the Imperium. Eldar have been my fluff army of choice ever since, with a nod to Space Wolves and Orks in the past because they are (well, were) fun. I can still dig playing Marines from a purely gamer kind of stance, but I have no love for them, but once in a while it would be nice to dig up the no-brainers instead of having to agonize over every move I make.

Retroactively applied infallability is its own reward. I wish I knew this years ago.

I'm both chaotic and orderly. I value my own principles, and am willing to go to extreme lengths to enforce them, often trampling on the very same principles in the process. At best, I'm heroic and principled; at worst, I'm hypocritical and disorderly.
