Thank you Matt Ward for... something... I just need to find it first...

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Explain? Codex: IG is great. Codex: Tyranids is a bit of a mess, but the Guard codex is a book that can be fluffy and powerful at the same time.

He did decent on the IG book and I give him credit for that. There are areas that are still pretty bad, like most of the elite section, rough riders and Mogul, deathstrike, etc, but overall it's a fairly nice dex...like you said, top tier powerlevels, flexible, and still generally fluffy. Nids were such a train wreck though that he's gonna have to work pretty hard to redeem himself in my eyes (not that my opinion means anything). Ward on the other hand, has consistantly produced fairly solid rules on every dex he's done...even if the fluff has been trash. He's had some rough units as well, but not nearly as bad as Cruddace has done.

What's so bad about the Deathstrike? To me it seems like a fun, if somewhat inefficient toy. Rough Riders and Mogul I'll agree with you on.

Pyrovores can be a fun toy too. It doesn't mean that they are something I'd take in any game I was serious about winning. 160pts for something that while very nasty, is a one shot weapon that you don't really have any control of when you get to use it and can be shut down pretty easily just does not fit my idea of a competative unit.

It has many of the same problems that Tyranids do actually, primarily some "wtf" (stormtroopers, Ogryns, penal legion) and pointless units (deathstrike for example, if not an ICBM, then at least an intermediate ballistic missile, having no place in a company scale tabletop wargame, in addition to being hugely useless) and awful internal balance, but it's also got enough good stuff to more than make up for it. I'll be interested to see what he does with his next book.

But in all seriousness, Ward isn't THAT bad, he just needs to tone it down a bit. If he hadn't gone to that level of OTT, which I mean to be honest, it wouldn't be hard to tone down the fluff/rules of his books a little. But to be fair, Warhammer Armies: Daemons of Chaos makes our relationship openly hostile.

With stormtroopers, not only are they overpriced, but overburdened with wargear and special rules that their statline just doesn't support and that doesn't synergize well.

Ogryns got a huge stat boost, which they really needed, then a 60% price increase which they really didn't, and despite nearly two decades of fluff describing Ogryns and fearless and immovable troops, they get an Ld reduction to 6/7, making them more prone to breaking than basic Guardsmen squads.

Actually, it was a little over two years. Daemons were released in May 2008, 8E released in summer 2010.

Seriously, we've had how many threads pointing out that STs aren't bad? Just because they're not neccesarily the top choice in a leafblower or aircav list doesn't mean that they're "bad" or "overpowered".

As a guy who ran an all stormtrooper army in 4E, whose favorite IG unit in terms of fluff is ST's, and has over 200 various ST models (Kasrkin, DKoK Grenadiers, 3E metal Stormtroopers), yes, they're bad as anything other than a minimum sized suicide melta unit. They are merely on par with MEQ's (their designed foe) in a shooting war that cost less than they do and are much better in CC and far more survivable, they get annihilated in CC by anything but Guardsmen equivalent units, and are stuck with cut-range Rapid Fire weapons that prevent them from making synergistic use of their CC wargear that actually might make them mediocre. Yeah, they're good against expensive Eldar infantry. But anything's good against Eldar infantry if you've got the opportunity to directly engage them, you don't need ST's for that. Anything ST's can engage in the backfield (aside from their suicide melta tole), an Ordnance platform can do just as well from across the board and probably be cheaper as well. But that's really not the point of this thread so I'm dropping it here.
