Man, I have to say that a lot of the small conversions I did on my orks are awesome, but I haven't quite figured out how I want to paint them, so I haven't even touched them yet. I have been trying to figure this dilemma out for at least 2 months now. I see alot of people painting their orks bright green, but mine are dirty and gross sewer dudes, and i'm having a hard time finding a good shade of green that is dirty but not too muddy looking. I will definitely attempt to get some of them painted this weekend though.

Nice, i am the exact same way. i have sculpted a bunch of custom thing's for my ork army. but currently i only have 2 fig's painted(a warbuggy and a nob). i am doing purple pants on my cause i want them to kinda look like an army of hulks. but eventially i will paint mine.
as for a dirty green, what about starting with the snotling green then going darker and darker shades of drown/greens to achieve the dirty sewery effect. idk thou i am a sculpter not a painter lol.....

I know this is going to sound a little off but what if you painted them up with a dark green base and some skin markings like the TMNT did in the third movie?

Haha, you know, my head never made the connection that orks are pretty much a society of hulks. That is an awesome idea and I approve.
When I think of orks, I think of all of my metalhead/biker friends, but painted green and alot dumber. (Alot drunker on a consistant basis, too!) I grew up in Los Angeles around train tracks and graffiti, and I want to somehow incorporate that into my army. I used to do some late-night bombing myself when I was younger, so I'm thinking I might have a job ahead of me here, making some tagged up trukks and what-nots. And it may SOUND like I have a plan, but these are all still things floating in my head.

thats funny i grew up the same way. i live pretty close to L.A. also. i thought of the ork's as metal heads too. i am gunna to my bikers as the WAAAGGGHH ANGLS. they are gunna have tattoo's and biker vest with the patches on the back and everything. now it just comes down to when i can actually do all this stuff haha.
i kinda like the idea of graffitti on the ork vehicle's. that seems orky.

I've been to Simi Valley a few times too, I know you can relate. Haha. I am definitely going with the graffiti ideas. My ork boyz gang is called Da Rokkheds, and my nobs are Da Hedrokkas. -insert growing excitement for ork army-

Thank you for the compliment! And I will definitely check that guy out. I love looking at pictures of cool things, especially ones I can learn from. BUT ONLY if you would be so kind to vote on my nurgle prince in my gallery.. Well, you don't HAVE to, but you should. :p

Haha, I dig it! I imagine my orks to have a heavy scottish-type accent, and those are the only type of people I know besides older folk that use the word 'trousers' I can't wait to see pics of your army, it definitely intrigues me.

I definitely have plans to do this, I just haven't figured out what logo I want them to have. I am, however, going to be green-stuffing some mohawks and liberty spikes and what not onto them (If I can figure out what color ork hair would be.. On second thought, probably red so they can think fasta!) I was thinking I'd give them studded jackets too, at least on my bikers.
And one last thing to say to you, sir. There is no such thing as too much Sons of Anarchy. Okay? Got it?! -froths at mouth-

Practice makes perfect, and the best thing about orks is that.. they're orks. They don't care about looking good. One of the guys at my local gw painted his orks with uhh.. orkhide shade, washed with devlan mud, and then highlighted with snot green. It's a really simple way to get alot of them painted and it looks really good. I say go simple and don't feel overwhelmed. Keeping to a small color palette is the way to go.

You think it's amazing now, once you have assembled it you will feel the pain shared by all old-school ork players worldwide!!! those things are an absolute pig to put together and fall apart quicker than a teenager on a daytime talk show
They are pretty nice models though, I've got a bunch of the old metal killa kanz, though personally I prefer the new plastic ones.
As for a skin tone, I use
Orkhide Shade -> 1:1 Orkhide Shade:Goblin Green -> Badab Black -> 1:1 Orkhide Shade:Goblin Green -> Goblin green (use sparingly on scars/eyebrow ridges/nose/lips etc, because I like the appearance of extreme highlights)
That gives a pretty dulled+gritty looking skintone (the nobz in my gallery are painted this way), maybe if you experimented along that it might give you the grimy look you're after (maybe try using devlan mud instead of badab black and toning down the extreme highlight?)

Haha, I expected that result when I learned the hard way. I bought the Tzeench Demon Prince, and painted him up SO nice. When I was ready to build his base, he rolled over and turned into a chipped up pile of bitz. What an donkey-cave. After that I learned to expect the worst from the metal models. I have the new plastic Deff Dread too, I just wish they would make a plastic cast of the old one. But, since they don't, I'll just give myself something to stress about. (It makes the 8-5 job seem a lot less of an annoyance.)
Also, I'm going to check out your gallery. That sounds like a pretty simple way to do it. I also saw some crazy ork tutorial the other day where you basecoat it yellow and ink it with Thraka a few times. It looked pretty spectacular, but I'd probably find a way to mess that up. Thanks for the tips though, my orks are going to launch their Waagh on me if I don't paint them soon. (They said so)

About 6 or 7 months since I painted my first model. I can't say I've gotten much done since then, but I have some pretty brutal things to add to this thread today. It depends on what precisely you ordered. Books tend to arrive faster than models, but Forge World themselves say that 28 days is the longest you should give models arriving to any part of the US.
If they haven't arrived by that timeframe, contact your local mail office and make sure it wasn't just held up at the processing center.
Speaking from experience on the East Coast though, you should be looking at around two weeks tops if the piece shipped the day you ordered it.

Oh man, you're making me blush! Haha. Thank you for the compliment. I had alot of fun painting that Rhino. That was precisely the thing that really got me motivated to paint in the first place, and I feel like I've come a long way since then. But it definitely shows the style I want to go for with my orks, slightly beaten up, but doesn't look overbearingly dirty. And if you think that's cool, you just wait until I post pictures of my battle wagon. Its my first conversion and definitely something I'm proud to show off.

Well I live in Southern Cali, so I imagine it'd take a day or two longer than yours. I just wanted to order the supakannon for my battle wagon, but I think I'm going to save that for when I have a few other things on the Forgeworld list. I'm particularly impatient when it comes to things in the mail, I can't imagine the agony of having to wait 2 whole weeks per item! But thank you for letting me know from experience, I couldn't reasonably believe that anyone still follows the '6-8 business week' rule. Also, thank you for subscribing, I'm glad that you like my work so far. It will only get better from here.
Automatically Appended Next Post: So, first off I'll show you the ork boy I painted last night. Kind of a test model to see if it would look good, and I think it does:
I'd definitely appreciate some constructive criticism, as I feel like theres still some improvements to be made. But this was pretty simple to do and I /do/ have about 50 orks to be painted currently, with more to come. If you don't have any criticism, let me know if he looks cool or not because I'm going to have a whole army of it. Haha.
And... *drum roll* My Spider Waaaghon!! Its my first conversion and I think it turned out well.
I'm proud of it, and if you'd like to chat about it I started a new thread found here:

Thank you! I finally figured out what to do with the skin. Kind of tied in my Nurgle palette to it, and it seems to highlight them well. I originally wanted to dull them out a little, I dig dull colors, but I think I'm going to stick with the semi-vibrant colors where needed. Im getting so stoked about my ork army now, and I will give credit to Dakka for the motivation.

That colour scheme looks great! Personally I think it's not that vibrant, it's just a paler scheme that makes it a bit brighter than it is.
And the spider-wagon looks superb! Great use of the arachnarok spider.
