Alright, I'm in. I really feel like I missed the boat on the "Pimp My Wizard" event, and I not missing out on this one!

I'm submitting my Vostroyan Commander in to the "Dakka 40k Single Miniature Painting Extravaganza" Here are some WIP pics for your viewing pleasure:

When I got him of of eBay, he was missing his baton. Trust me, I was not broken up about it. Here he is with a roughrider gloved hand. I also disliked the claw foot, so I removed the lateral talons.


Here is the next step: beginnings of a pointy finger and preliminary GS on the bionic foot.

I also thought the Skull and Crossbones looked a little off. Since the last pic I marred it up enough with a pin vice and hobby knife to blend in with the rest of the hat. He's primed with a base coat of red so far. (I started painting last night, I hope that's not cheating) More pics on that later.

Happy Saturday everyone! I hope all of the entries are progressing nicely. I must say, I'm really enjoying this so far. The competition aspect really makes it easy to spend a lot of time on a model. He's shaping up to be one of my best painted models ever!

The front still needs the most work out of anything. Face has work left, greatcoat liner has work left. There's still so many little details to work out! I'm thinking I'll paint the sash white, the medalion mostly boltgun with some gold trim and a green gem, and the powerfist some sort of silvery color. I think the PF's a little too hidden to do anything really cool. The two things I haven't figured out colors for are the glove and his moustache. Any thoughts there?


Simple receipe, but I like how it turned out. Blood red, heavy Gryphonne Sepia wash, blood red highlights. I really like how the greatcoat liner turned out here! I'm trying to get it as crisp on the front side, too.


I'm pretty happy with how the feathers and frogging are coming along.


Any CC out there? It would be greatly appreciated

Hmm looks interesting. Here's my entry:

MOrdain: Nice use of a meltabomb! Great highlighting all over. The only thing that doesn't work for me is the termi shield codpiece. It seems a little oversized and draws alot of attention to his, well, codpiece.

Surfboard66: The purity seals are really great! You going to do something with his eyes?

Snarky: Loving the Elysian! I think the pose you've got there is pretty unique. The goggles and weathering on the base look particularly great. I'd like to see a bit more highlighting, especially on his clothes. That quilted pattern will really pop if you build up the raised parts. Do you have any more work planned for the plasma coil? It looks a little flat right now. Keep it up!

I got a bit more painting done last night after my last post. Worked on the sash and the medalions and medals and such. Base coat on the bionic leg and powerfist. The picture doesn't do justice to the sash or purity seal. Someday I'm going to need to invest in some photography equipment...

I still need to highlight the green on the purity seal, add some depth to the gem, and paint his pistol (at least I think it's a pistol next to his powerfist). I was thinking I'd paint the cord around his neck red and white braid. I still haven't decided how to go with the glove: I'm kind of leaning towards leather. I figure that there's a lot of red on him already and a white glove means he doesn't get his hands dirty. I was also thinking about putting him on a bigger/better base with a little more height. I think it would look a lot better, but I'm a little afraid of messing around with him at this point. Thoughts?

On to the problem:

Yesterday I found that I was missing more than just the baton for this guy. He is supposed to have a sword sheathed at his side, which I also don't have. You can see the two knobs used to attach the sword. Now, since I didn't figure this out until I'm halfway done painting, I have to figure out a solution. I could just paint the knobs gold, and the rectangle white and hope nobody notices, but that seems lame. I could try and attach something else there, like a purity seal or holster or something. Any bright ideas out there?

Is anyone actually working on a model for this competition? Unless I am mistaken, the idea was we were painting new models and posting progress and getting CC and whatnot. Seems like everyone is submitting "Best Of"s. Not so many progress pictures = not so much fun. Alright, coming down now

A few more details done here. I like how the cord turned out (and doesn't look too much like a candy cane, I hope...). I got the first round of paint on the glove. I'm not happy with it yet. It still looks...flat. I think the wash didn't do as much as normal with a lack of recesses for much of the glove. I'll have to get better at blended highlights, I guess...



A few things left to do: The aforementioned glove work, highlights on the gem and purity seal, embossing on the pistol butt, final detailing on his face

Now we have two problems:

1) I still haven't come up with a clever solution to the missing sword issue (see above), and I haven't heard anything from the Dakkites yet either.

2) There is a problem with photographing my work: I see it 10x bigger on the computer screen. There's a huge ing mold line on his glove! Of course, I couldn't have noticed this earlier. That would be far too easy to fix. Ideas? Do you think it would look like a seam in the glove if I filed off the mold line on the fist part? Or should I just bite the bullet and file it all off and repaint the glove? Leave it?

X) Not exactly a problem, but I still haven't made a decision about the base. Any opinions out there? Bueller? Bueller?

My minature was in a line of projects and got moved up fortune comp. I agree that it's kinda a shame to enter previous models, but it brings more awareness tothe comp.

Hey, that's a pretty fun concept! Is he a one-of for the painting comp, or are you working up a few more of these guys? Have you thought about adding a few more 40k bits to him? Right now he kinda looks like a feral ork that picked up a shoota. Maybe some grenades at his belt? (unles you're afraid it will drag his loincloth down )

I have a unit made up of these guys - this one is the test model, more of a distraction project than my main stuff :-) Good call on the more 40k stuff - will hunt down some Stikbombs and cover up his naked butt.

In the meantime - I have rummaged through the Bitzbox and made this fella - Some kind of Chaos Marine/Wolf/Vampire thing I think :-\ . . . Sprayed white as I post this so some painting done tonight :-)
