Hello all - New to DakkaDakka and looking forward to talking to you all

Admissions first - I have been away from the 40k stuff for a good few years (8+) but have painted up some stuff along the way. Fantasy has been my main time consumer for a while - I may even get round to posting up some stuff for that too . . .

But recently I have felt the need for doing something a bit different, painting and modelling wise - so I had a good look around, and while I must admit I was VERY tempted by doing a Dark Eldar army, I plumped for my all-time favourites - Orks!

But nut just any Orks - I always have a fluffy theme, something that will challenge me - so I went for Rebel Grot theme, with a heavy reliance on Kans, Dreds, Mega Armour (Yep - Grots in Mega-Armour!) for the punch . . . along with Grots galore (when I get enough from Ebay!)


So . . . The theme will develop as I get going but for now I have started with the stuff below.

Firstly - The Big Mek (Grot) in Mega armour. I tried the proper Mega Armour but it did not look right with the Grot heads - so I decided to make a FULL ROBOT VEHICLE!! - Why would a Big Mek make all of these Kans and Dreds without making himself one too??!!?? The base is the same size as the Mega Armour model so there should be no problem gaming with it, and besides the Kinder Egg body, the bits are from various GW models (Including the Kans Sprues)

As you will see from the photos after - I got the conversion bug after that and used some GW paint pots for starting the Mega Armour Models . . .

I love the bodies you used for the kanz. It reminds me of the dreads Frawg and I built. Looks like this could be a very fun thread.

Excellent use of random and bits to make something great! I really like your deep red color you used for the "KinderKan".

My only cc would be to add some more orky plates on all three. You can get a hold of some really thin plasticard to mold against all of the curves. I think it would help conceal the original uses of your kans.

I agree with Rawson that a few more plates wouldn't go amiss, but certainly a promising start, I'll be keeping an eye on this.

@schank23 - Had a look at your Ork stuff, made me cry a little with jealousy, VERY Orky, VERY cool :-)

@ Rawson & @monkeytroll - Good call on the plates, have just returned from the Hobby shop with bits of plasticard, will have a plate session later. The Kinder Kan may be a little different as the egg plastic is made of 100% Teflon, hardly anything sticks to it. I will be Glyphing and adding black and white checks with decals and paint as I go on . . . but everything else seems to take glue ok - so the paint-pot bots will be getting the full treatment :-)

Ooh - forgot . . .

The first set of Kans! . . . 90% of the converting done (not much as the models are packed with stuff I like), waiting for some flamer bits to arrive and the third Kan will have a twin-scorcha too. Various bits used from all over, some Black Orc Shields for the shoulder pads and suchlike. As you can see I have basecoated them in plasti-cote Matt Brown as recommended by one of the many podcasts I subscribe to. I was a little nervous at first (have had periods of both black and white undercoat preference) but the palette I favour lends itself to brown.

The Grot driver will be painted separately as I still paint the Grots with a white Undercoat to get the skin how I like it . . .

Love it, the poses really scream Orky! My favourite has to be the kan with one wheel and one leg, I can just see it hopping along the battlefield with the grot driving it smashing his head aginst the top hatch with every step

Very nice, love the drill-on-a-stikk and the big 'ammer. Interesting about not being able to glue the eggs well, I have a couple lying around waiting to be turned into something.

They remind me of some Steampunk mecha Isaw long ago, very nice in an evil-ly cuteish kinda way.

Your Kans are super! I love paint Kan 1 with one leg and one wheel ! I really like the way the chain raps around the hatch,very nice touch.

Your jealous. Those melee weapons on those kans are beautiful. That hammer is my favorite. Awesome conversions. Can't wait for paint.

@monkeytroll - If I do use another Kinder Egg (I got 5 in total, not for modeling - I just like chocolate) I will probably get some sandpaper and roughen the plastic. I did this on the Paint-Bots as they were especially shiny when I started to glue stuff to them. I seem to remember someone telling me that the roughness will allow the Superglue to grab on to more surface area and hold better . . . seems to work!

@WarMill and @talons 58 - thanks :-) . . . the wheel leg came from frustration, 2 in the morning and running out of bits. I will take a pic of that side so you can see what is holding it on ;-)

I'm glad you pointed that out, I missed it the first time around! Very orky!

Not much painting done tonight - Hazard Stripe on the BigMek Kan and some highlights (and have taken the airborne leg off to paint - much easier to do . . .)

But as promised - a shot of the other side of Paint-Bot No.1 . . . Wheel leg :-)

Killa Kan and Paint Kan Update time

The last of the three Killa Kans bitz arrived and now has the Twin Scorcha arm - made from the Grotzooka and bitz. The shot also shows the Choppa Arm




The Second is of the Paint Kan - added lots of bits and Plates (thanks for the tip guys - very happy with how it turned out)




Now that lots of bitz have arrived I am kitting out the Grots and adding all sorts of sillyness to fit in with the Rebel Grot Theme - Stars and Hats for EVERYONE!!!!

They remind me of the little walking bombs from Mario.

Two more updates - The first is the two fully converted and undercoated Paint Bots (Grot Mega Armour) . . . I will be basecoating these brown like the rest of the Kans later . . .


and the second is of the StormGrot Vulchaz! - Grot Stormboys made from the Grot Stormboy model you get with the Ork Stormboy Box . . . The Caps are from Mordian Iron Guard Models . . . If you scour the Bitz sites its amazing what you can get for VERY little money!



I think some painting may be in order soon . . .

Thanks for the comments - they keep me going . . . In fact, I started making a 2/3rd scale Grot Stompa yesterday (thinking of making 2 - one called Grotzilla and the other Grotzukki) - had to stop myself and get some painting done . . .

Will post the Grot Stompa Pic later.

@Rawson - Honestly, I have no idea . . . am open to suggestions tho'. Would like just a single colour suggestions for the theme as I tend to paint fairly generically until a theme becomes apparent. Go on - pick one for me :-)

I'd say red or black would be sweet, mainly as I think the caps would look cool in either of those

And did the caps come on their own? I'd always assumed they were moulded on the heads. Might have to search out a couple now.

@monkeytroll - I think I would prefer red out of the two, I am terrible at paining black (as odd as that sounds!)

The Caps are from a mass bunch of Mordian Iron Guard heads that I saved from a project many years ago - a simple head-swap job - but I saved all of the snipped heads for the caps in the hope that would find a use for them some day . . . and that day has come! :-)


Also - as promised, a pic of the Grot Stompa that I started last night . . .

Going to paint some Stormgrots tonight to have a break from Converting . . .

At last - back on to painting - below is a shot of the No.1 Stormgrot (Grot Stormboyz). In contrast to the rest of the army - I will be undercoating white and painting up from there. The rest of the army is given a light undercoat (any) and then sprayed with Krylon Matt Brown.

Awesome paint work so far! Very real.

Two more pics - working on the style of the Grots themselves (The Stormgrot in the pic is the test model) - looks like Red suits best . . .



And then an Update pic of the Stompa (Grotzilla) - Rokkit arm attached and the Belly Gun taking shape.

Rebel Grot update - Stormgrot Scheme complete, just a few more touches and I can add it to the rest of the unit and the army . . .
