Never really got the bikers/hell's angels aspect but what the hell, Rogue Trader was full of weird badly smushed together concepts. In Epic the were amazing. Demiug are a nice tip-of-the-hat, and I hope they find some way in to the next Tau codex. In the meantime I'll be keeping a close eye on the Manic Warpath Forgefathers and perhaps getting a few.

Not only do I have a decent sized army, I have played my Squats in nearly evey edition of the game.
And not, as 'suggested by GW', as Ig or Orks. I play mine as a SM scout expeditionary force.
I do miss having the option of fielding heavy support as troops though, plus whole squads with special weapons.

Of all the races of the universe the Squats have the longest memories and the shortest tempers. They are uncouth, unpredictably violent, and frequently drunk. Overall, I'm glad they're on our side!

There is no such "official" line. The closest we have is in the current IG codex where it mentions Ghazkhull Thraka's destruction of Golgotha and it's abhuman inhabitants. (P24). Old timey 40k-ers will know Golgotha was one of the Squat homeworlds in the original background.

The lack of reason is part of the problem why gamers are so frustrated as to why they got rid of them, until the aforementioned reply from Jervis was posted a few years back there was no explanation as to why they were written out of the background and no mention of them is ever made, even going as far as to throw people out of the shops (yes, really. I saw this happen many a time when I frequented a certain GW store) for the sheer mentioning of them.

Squats. I confess to liking them more over the years at least partly because they were mostly unavailable. I got into the game right as 2nd ed. came out and even though you could still find squats in stores, it was clear that they weren't a well supported army at that time. By the time I realized how cool they were, they were gone.

I like the basic squat infantry parka-and-cap look, though the biker models were never my cup-o-tea. Honestly, the Mantic inerpretation of Space Dwarves appeals to me as much as GW's, but I do hope they come out withsome unarmored models as well as the fully armored figs they are about to release.

the problem I see with Squats is the same problem I see with Orks, that they don't really fit into 40k fluff anywhere. They seem to be just sort of wedged in there without any real direction.

The squats are not GRIMDARK enough for 40k, they seemed to be a sort of joke army, one that didn't take itself seriously. I don't think that sort of thing should be in the game. If the setting wants to be taken seriously, it needs to take itself seriously, and having things like the Squats and Orks in there doesn't help.

The tech aspect of the squats was pretty cool, I will admit. Unstoppable weapons, marvels of engineering, things like that, I like that. However, instead of GW bringing back the Squats and having another army that is nothing more than comedic relief, why not bring in a faction that already has established fluff and takes itself seriously, namely, the AdMech.

I agree that the want for squats is nothing more than "I can't have it, therefore I want it." It's like if they took Necrons away. There are very few necron players out there, but if they were gone, suddenly you'd have people talking about how much they loved Necrons and the like, and I can guarantee that most of them had never touched a Necron.

I think you may be overstating the seriousness of the 40k setting. It has gotten more grimdark over the years and this is especially seen in most of the Black Library Novels. However, it's never been a "hard-Sci-Fi" universe, and it's roots (RT and 2nd edition), are goofy, not-to-serious, and presented with a wink. If anything Orks are a quentisential 40k race. If the poster children for 40k are mutated knights in powered plate armor, then they need beasty green monsters in space with guns to fight against.

Even with the trend for grimdark and putting asside Orks, Dwarves in space wouldn't be all that goofy compared to what we currently have. Consder the inclusion of elves in space with their dancing new-wave theater troupe, anime robot drivers with their canibalistic chicken mercenaries, Psuedo-religious Inquisitors are acompanied by heavy weapon toting orangutangs, and the masses of humanity fight along side Hobbit snipers and Ogre's with auto-shotguns.

When you step back from 40k, you realize just how not-serious it all is.

I sorta feel that the 40K universe is lacking in the fact that they don't have a race that fills the dwarf arch-type. It doesn't have to be squats that fill that but I would like something that does.

Taken from The last Wulfen, a poster on a different site:

"+++Everything you know is a lie!+++-------------------------------Inquisition

+++The Squats weren't eaten by the Tyranids+++-----------Imperial Lie/propaganda/cover up

+++020.M37 THE GREAT CULL+++

In their mercy, the High Lords of Terra begin a systematic extermination

+++M37 THE AGE OF REDEMPTION+++

The Imperial Cult grows. The Imperium decrees that all worlds within the Imperium must follow Imperial Creed. No more will empires within the Imperium be tolerated.

The freedom loving Squats refuse.

The Imperium covets the Wealth and Technology of the Squat Homeworlds.

The Imperium launches Crusade after Crusade into the Squat Homeworlds in a war of genocide.

This lasts for over 300 years with the Imperium taking horrendus losses and the Squat Homeworlds all but destroyed.

All records of the Squats are destroyed by the Inquisition.

Over 30 Space Marine Chapters are wiped out.

This is explained away by the Abyssal Crusade.

It is believed that the surviving Squats aided in the advancement of the Tau. This explains the rapid advancement of this new race and the sightings of the Demiurg.

The sightings of the Squats within the Tau worlds lead to questions previously erased by the Inquisition. Hence the current lie of the Squats being destroyed by the Tyranids.

The Tyranids enter in M41, the Squats were destroyed in M37.

This information is hidden in plain sight in the 5th edition Rulebook page 125"

There is also this little tidbit from Citadel Journal that proves the Squats were not in fact eaten by Tyranids, but instead that they were subsumed into the Imperium!

From Citadel Journal, Issue 33, copyright 1999, pages 20 and 21.

The article name is : Standing in for the little guys, how to use your Squat armies in Warhammer 40,000. By Jervis Johnson.

The story of the Squats goes like this in the Article:

"Over the last few hundred years the Squat Homeworlds have slowly but surely been conquered and incorporated into the Imperium, so that now there are no independent Squat planetary settlements left. Human settlers were encouraged to live on the Squat worlds as soon as they had been made a part of the Imperium, and Imperial officials took over the day-to-day running and administration of the planet. Such worlds are required to raise Imperial Guard regiments in the same way as any other planet...

Although all the Squat Homeworlds no longer exist, their are still bands of Squats that fight independently and follow the old traditions of their race. Many have become little more than pirates and brigands, though some consider themselves freedom fighters attempting to restore Squat independence. "

In my game room playing Specialist GW games

And proof is found in the vehicles and weapons from the Space Marine and Imperial Guard Codex's

Force Dome used to be a Squat psychic power, not a space marine one...

The Thunderfire cannon resembles a Thudd Gun...in the Epic game the thudd gun was used extensively by the Squats....it also fired 4 small templates. The Mole Mortar was also used extensively by the Squats and the Thunderfire cannon has similarities with that as well....Those used to mess with movement too...Squats used to use them in the Squat Grand Battery. It had 5 thudd guns and 10 Mole Mortars.

The Colossus was the name of a Squat Super Heavy Vehicle and now it is just a tank in the Imperial Guard.

The Valkyrie and Vendetta show startling similarities to the Squat Iron Eagle Gyrocopter.

I'm sure there are more examples if one cared to look...

Sure sounds to me like the Imperium Conquered them and then messed with their tech and psychics too!

I really disagree that there are too many Codexes. I think what makes the game good is the variety. The fact that 85% of what I play against are Space Marine variants is lame. It doesn't even fit with fluff, when you're playing Iperium v. Imperium. I'd personally like to see Squats, as well as multiple other races. I find it sad that Fantasy has so many different Armies and 40K has so many different Marine Chapters. You can't tell me that Squat wouldn't at least sell equal to Necrons or Tau.
