Ugh. Don't use "slowed" like that. Or better yet, at all. Compared to other models of the time, Squats were pretty average. Everything looked pretty silly and goofy until 3rd edition really.

Thats right, they work in the shadows and pop up when you least expect them. I use 2 of them myself in my Squat IG army.

Clearly GW hadn't entirely divorced itself from the "40K is WHFB in space" theme they once had. The re-designed exo-armor models are actually very good looking. I think they would still hold up well today, looking at least as good as soem of the 3rd edition SM sculpts. For a start, they aren't egg-shaped anymore, and resemble cut-down SM power armor. The over-the-shoulder slung assault cannon on one model is nice, and giving them thunder hammers in lieu of power fists really rams home the dwarves in space motif. I wish I had photos for you, I really do. Are these them? http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/Squats_-_Unreleased They are very different from the RT era Squats.

It is such a shame they never put the 3rd ed squats into full production. I sigh and think of what could have been every time I see them.
This guy is my personal fav. For a basic trooper he lookd really cool.

These are the 2nd edition squats, they never even got a codex. You could only use them with the 'get you started' rules that came in the main box. They had the rules for their bikes and trikes though.
I think one problem with Squats is that they don't have any medium sized vehicles. It's either bikes or land trains/colossus.

The models above were the prototype for 3rd edition squats. They were done before they decided to ax the boys when they were still developing 3rd. The two above and a handful of others were never released to the general public. A few employees got some when they molds were first done, and some crafty guys that worked in the mold room got some, but risked being fired to do it. That is what they would have looked like if they would have kept them in 3rd, but they were taken out shortly completely shortly before 3rd was released.

This could make for an interesting army though. An army of bikers and Land Raider-esque heavy armor would be a bit different from the typical "as many cheap transports as possible" stuff that happens now.

If you look at the progression from 1st to current, you will notice there has been vehicle creep as the "treadheads" have gotten more influence over the game in general. Many armies in the early editions lacked medium and heavy vehicles. The 1st/2nd ed was mainly infantry based, with light vehicles and bikes.

Yeah he was I think for the second or 3rd printing, because at that time they had been spending a few years developing 3rd due to the fact that it was a complete overhaul of the game system. But the unreleased models were the 3rd ed prototypes made before 3rd came out so sometimes are reffered to as unreleased 2nd ed models.

3rd ed? No way. The legendary 2nd Ed squats were just that, developed circa 92/93 as 2nd edition came out. One or two were shown in the Dark Millennium supplement. 3rd ed was released in 98, by which time the Squats were a dirty word, and had even become noticeably absent from the late 90s Epic/Titan Legions where the had previously enjoyed some support.

I'm telling you I know people who know people who rob people who sleep with other peoples wives. 3rd was in development at that time. They had been working on it for a few years and all of the designers were asked to do mock ups for the various races, squats included. Part way through development for 3ed squats got axed so the mockups were never put into full production and are sometimes reffered to as the unreleased 2nd ed, or 3rd ed prototypes either is correct given the fact that they were done in between the two.

No, there are pictures of two of those models (the champion and the trooper) on the inside back cover of my copy of Dark Millennium, which was released only a few months after the 2nd edition boxed set. They were designed for 2nd edition, long before 3rd was released.

That's what I was gonna say, I don't see how models photographed in 93 could be produced in 94 - 97 Regardless, they show up infrequently on ebay and go for alot. Twice last year I lost out on the 2nd Ed Exo, which went for over £300 in both cases

YES! That's the one I'm talking about! Wow... good paint job on that one, too! The exo armors my friend had were done up in bronze and iron colors, but the green and white works well...

I will acquiesce for the sake of the thread. Either way, whenever they came out I think we can all agree they were bad a@#$%s models and should have been released. Oh what could have been?

Pulsa Rokkits used to be in 2nd edition 40k. Basically when they were fired they would pulse out at a random distance and knock down everything in that distance. The pulse would also be a random distance every single turn. They were rarely lethal unless you were in a building and the building got knocked down. They worked pretty much the same way in Epic.
