Ah squats. Unfortunately they were before my time. I hope GW goes somewhere good with the Demiurg, with at least some chance of them belonging to the IoM

"I am nevertheless strongly inclined to think that people only want the Squats now because they can't have them."

- Not true. I still have mine and still love them. If they made new ones I would buy those too. Several squads of the original plastics, with heavy weapons, attack trikes, musicians, some hearth guard, one chaos squat in exo armour (still one of my fav ever GW models.) and two chaos squats in power armour. In fact I've been away from the game for a while ... actually about 10 years lol, and just started getting back into it. It was a love of painting and modelling that brought me back to it a few months ago. I have been playing some games of second edition with my borthers and our friends ... which has taken me to working on rebuilding old armies I never finished back in the day when I was a kid. I'm adding some new kit-bashed imperial guard as brood brothers to my original genestealers and hybrids to finish off one of those armies I always wanted. The other I'm working on is the Squats. In the original red compendium book from the Rogue Trader days it had a section about Chaos Squats. At the time of the Horus Heresy a large part of the Squat homeworlds sided with Horus and fought against loyal squats and the Imperium. Just like the original space marine legions after they were defeated they retreated to the Eye of Terror ... where they remain to this day. Even if somebody decided that "tyranids ate them" there are still chaos squats living on some daemon worlds. That's official GW right there, let's see them try and figure out how to write Chaos Squats out of the story lol. Unless a hive fleet magically goes into the Eye of Terror and only attacks the worlds that have Chaos Squats living on them. You can try and get rid of the little guys, but too bad! They're tuff little buggers.

The army list will be simple. In that compendium book you could give Chaos Squats, chaos rewards from the Lost and the Damned book. So it isn't a stretch to just use the second edition black codex for a basic army list. Instead of the Lost and Damned from Rogue Trader era, the Chaos rewards from second edition Chaos Codex will work perfectly. With the black codex you can just pick everything with those point costs, structure etc, and have allied daemons and Chaos rewards from the Chaos Codex. As I plan on using these for games of second edition with my friends and brothers, using a hybrid second edition list will work perfectly. The only real stretch will be the Chaos Androids. I have a squad of original Chaos Androids from the Space Crusade box set. They only ever made an appearance in space crusade and Epic, but not 40K. The story behind them is that Chaos Squats made them by binding the souls of daemons inside a robotic frame. They are, as far as I can tell, what GW later based Necrons on, at least for look of them even if they have a different back story. So they'll be part of the army using the second edition Necron rules, or I'll adapt Rogue Trader rules for robots to second edition.

The biggest problem here is finding original models and repainting the ones I already have. Especially because I was only 7 years old in 1990 when my older brothers got me some squats as my first models ... they're not exactly painted the best ... So I plan on stripping them down and starting over. The basic Squat troopers should be easy to paint, just do something more black and spikey instead of the red yellow and green like they were. I have some spikes from the chaos vehicle sprue that will convert the attack trikes nicely. The hard part will be to find additional models to fill out the few Chaos squats I have. Squats in exo armour are running about $15.00 each on ebay, and I need four more of them for a complete squad. I only have two of the Chaos Squats in power armour ... and getting more is virtually impossible. I've been looking for months and haven't seen any. I'm guessing if they do ever show up they'll go for an arm and a leg. So I may just use those for characters and call it good. Even the chaos squats with mutations are on ebay once and a while ... but for the price I'm thinking about just converting my own. I think some black spikey squats will look really good next to all my other chaos stuff ... and besides, if you're going to paint anything it might as well be chaos!

All that being said, I have always liked squats, regardless if GW tries to get rid of them or not. I still have my models, they do indeed exist, and they can't completly get rid of them. If they ever decide to make them again I would get some. But as it stands it's a chance to be nostalgic about memories of when I was a kid. Even repainting them now gives me a chance to do something I've always wanted to, and I think they'll make an awesome and truly custom addition to my chaos army. So if you don't care for them, don't worry, hardly anybody even knows what they are, and only a few of us even remember that they ever existed.

When i was first introduced to 40K alot of kids were playing the old combat cards, that seemed to be a popular avenue into GW. Squats were heavily represented in the old space wars pack. Also at the time they had been on a couple of front covers of white dwarf and the old space dwarves plastic box set was a cheap way of getting your hands on 36 minatures. Oh and check out Goruns weapon skill of 13!!

I got into games workshop through epic space marines rules... and the Squats were a very powerful army in that game and earned my respect. I have a small squat army, great little Biker gang from space, but they are still a nice army. I might just field them as a imperial army one of these days just for a kick, use the Bikes as Cav, and just have to field a space squat with each heavy weapon to make a "Team" since imperial guard are no longer strong enough to carry heavy weapons, in 2nd edition I didn't play imperial guard did they have to have 2 man weapon teams back then?

Tyranids haven't been into the Eye of Terror yet have they?

Spoiler:
WD: 111 SQUATS AND CHAOS
To the shame of the Squat race, there are many strongholds and Brotherhoods who have sided with Chaos. During the wars of the Horus Heresy, Squat forces fought on both sides, and inevitably some fell prey to the corruption of Chaos. Like the other followers of Horus, these have now largely been banished to the Eye of Terror, but there are always rumours of isolated groups of Chaos Squat raiders in various parts of the Imperium.

It has even been rumoured that some of the strongholds which were lost to the warpstorms in the Age of Isolation may have survived, their horribly-mutated inhabitants raiding into the Imperium from time to time.

Maybe its because I'm old, but I prefer a lot of the older scupts to the stuff they are doing now. I love the dwarfs for both fantasy and 40k back then.

A : NO! Lol I would love to see them explain how Tyranids could magically get across the whole galaxy and go to the Eye of Terror, Fight their way past Billions of Daemons, and get to all the Daemon worlds swarming with every kind of horror possible just to eat some Chaos Squats ... too bad GW, Chaos Squats are still in the Eye of Terror lol.

I'm only 19 and I love the old models. 80's fantasy dwarfs have much more character than the new ones imo and I love Squats. I have a small army of them and like to play them in casual games with an unofficial codex and I would probably play them regularly if they were still around today.

Despite my lack of enthusiasm for the Squats in general, I have been tempted to convert a space-dwarf tech-priest as a Jokaero stand-in. Forge World's Chaos Dawrfs have also been making me wonder whether I might science fiction-up a few for a traitor army.

That's a really good idea! GKs and Inquisitors are super secretive as it is, having a lone Squat tech priest wouldn't be too far fetched fluff wise.

I don't mind fantasy dwarfs, I'd never play Em, but they fit into fantasy universes well. But space and dwarves just don't mesh well for me. Each to his own I guess.

The Acolytes in my game of DH have picked up a very short follower with a long beard and a flak jacket who goes by the name of Otto.

Officially he's not a squat, just a human who is best described as being squat in stature.

He functions as a very minor psychic blank to the degree that he always seems to make figures of inquisitorial authority inexplicably feel queasy and attempt to avoid actually acknowledging his existance.

Yes I still have some, and am going to repaint my originals as such. They made Two Exo Armour, Three power armour, and 7-8 chaos squat warriors with mutations like the original Chaos renegade models. Very cool stuff, but probably now some of the most rare models out there. Also unlike the rest of the squats that were "eaten by Tyranids" the Chaos Squats have been hiding in the Eye of Terror the last 10K years ... and they're still in there.

My secret fortress at the base of the volcano!

I've seen some of the test models they sculpted way back in late 2nd edition/early 3rd for the Squats. They never officially saw the light of day, but a good friend of mine worked in GW's US mold room back then, and he spun himself a few for shiggles. I myself have a pair of Squat "Cyber-Slayers". Clearly GW hadn't entirely divorced itself from the "40K is WHFB in space" theme they once had.

The re-designed exo-armor models are actually very good looking. I think they would still hold up well today, looking at least as good as soem of the 3rd edition SM sculpts. For a start, they aren't egg-shaped anymore, and resemble cut-down SM power armor. The over-the-shoulder slung assault cannon on one model is nice, and giving them thunder hammers in lieu of power fists really rams home the dwarves in space motif. I wish I had photos for you, I really do.
