Beholder $50 and Purple Worm $30?

How big is that Beholder?

Or, how small is that Worm?

They do all look pretty good though!

Is that a large flight stand or a small one?

Look at the first pics and compare them(and human sized Drow) to the terrain.
Or look here:

So they are indeed quite large. Don't have them with me ATM, but these are 60mm bases IIRC (otherwise they are larger).

I'm turned off by the prices.

I miss the Grenader stuff.

Might make due with my own from reaper, though after seeing the close second they make.

happy dances, either way.

That beholder seems way too big.

Unless they've gotten a lot larger since being introduced back in D&D and AD&D?

Are they really that big 'now'?

I suspect he's making a joke. The Reaper line is filled with D&Desque creatures. Either way it's a nice mini but something that I'll likely never get. Even if I do restart playing D&D once 4th edition is dead and buried, I've got enough of the old prepainted line to keep me satisfied for years. The plastic beholders were actually quite nice.

I know they expanded the 'race' so there are a load a subspecies all of whom think they are the 'real beholders' and hate each other

I think the Eye Tryants are now meant to be especially large Beholders (but I'm not certain whether they are yet another racial type, or just very powerful individuals)

Maybe I'm off base, but in the US they're listing prices as $50. For a box of 5 models, that seems pretty reasonable. For a model as big as the tyrant, that seems really reasonable. Am I missing something?

I'd quite like to get the Beholder but not for €50.

Had a look through the other stuff and the maps and terrain set look nice. €35 for 8 painted terrain pieces with crystals in them seems good to me I'm in need of some Relic Knights terrain so the Energon Crystals and Caverns of the Underdark set would work well.

The only design I like is the Purple Worm, but he is wayyyyy too expensive. It's a shame they went with Todd Lockwood's updated beholder design; it just looks goofy in sculpted form. It's like replacing Adam West Batman with George Clooney Batman--the flavor might change, but it's still cheese.

The other miniatures are just not inspiring enough to pay GW/PP/Infinity prices per mini. It doesn't help that Reaper has a lot of great alternatives for great prices.

I like these minis. In case of other D&D fans reading the thread, I'll point out that Otherworld have a very nice line of minis (some inspired by classic AD&D artwork): http://otherworldminiatures.co.uk/shop/

The Eye Tyrants, IIRC, are the equivolent of Ancient Wyrms for beholders. They're bigger than normal, and much more intelligent and dangerous. Hence the size increase; I can understand the confusion if you're just used to the normal ones. That said, it doesn't help that they fit under the "wtf is that" monster category for DnD: something people aren't usually aware of that the GM will spring it on the players simply because they usually don't know how to fight it at first. Sadly they have a lot of good monsters in this category.

On to the minis themselves, they look pretty good. Pricy, but then again we didn't get into this hobby cause it was cheap.

The drow designs don't do a whole lot for me, well sculpted but not my preferred aesthetic for elves of any color. A little too Moria goblin looking for my taste.

The purple worm is fantastic, absolutely awesome, but for the same price you could buy 10 of these

Aren't these supposed to be prepainted?

Beholder looks awesome! I am tempted, I must admit. I'd put him on a shelf and never use him, so I guess that's a good reason NOT to get one. Still, cool miniatures.

For something that looks like that, with that price, it is on par with other "Collectables" that I have seen.

Most of those are prepainted, thats why I asked.

Agree. The prices don't seem drastically higher than lots of models out there. If you want mass troopbuilding models or common gaming models, these may not be for you.

I think they are pretty sweet. The crystal set is pretty good and that Beholder may be shelf-sitting worthy as it is really well done. He may be used for some dungeoning but he looks great.

Actually yes, Lolth is the evil goddess of the Drow/Dark Elves in D&D and this miniature is her human form avatar. A separate priestess sculpt will follow in addition to this, but is not yet done. That's why the Drow set wasn't sold on this convention, but everything else was, as a world premiere.

lolth appeared in the classic adventure module Queen of the Demonweb Pits one of only 2 official D&D adventures where you got to kill a god. A god with only 66 hit points but a god nonetheless.

No wonder they worked 'LOL' right into her name.

That's what you get for being god of the emo, NIN-listening, self cutting, basement dwelling elfs I guess.

I remember Queen of the Demonweb Pits (an OK end to the otherwise awesome adventure that starts way back in he Steading of the Hill Giant Chief!), but...

...what's the other official D&D adventure where you get to kill a god?

That Beholder reminds me of the final boss in Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance.
Prices aren't bad. minis look decent.
If I played D&D, I might pick these up.

I might use it "counting as" a Hydra in my D&D Drow themed Dark Elf army . And Lolth and the Mind Flayer are the sorcerers.

Could not care any less about drow figures. Absolutely sick to death of them.

That gnoll is pretty fantastic as is the beholder. Sort of surprised some sort of dragon isnt in the initial set though. Theyre beyond iconic to Dungeons and Dragons I would think...

Maybe a question of Size/price ?

All of the named Dragons from D&D tend to be huge, and if they need to charge 45 Euros for the Beholder you'd probably be talking about 150+ for a dragon like that, well beyond impulse purchace rance.

Gale Force 9 would be taking a big financial risk with a limited edition figure at that price (for example quite a few Reaper Bones backers decided to pass on a $25 huge undead dragon as they didn't feel they'd use it or have anywhere to store it)
