Wow Olly, you have some beautiful work going on here! the choices in colour and basing are brilliant on the Tau models, everything you've shown us is exeptional and very inspiring :-) quick question for you, in your first post what are the two skinny robot dudes from? I quite like the mini's!

I saw this in the gallery, I signed up, I had to drop a line, this is very nice. Makes me want to completely change the color variations on my tau now... I mean... I've only done 24 warriors and 3 crisis suits and 3 stealth suits so far...

Mind I ask what airbrush you're using? I've thought about it but not sure about... anything in regard to it

These are fantastic! I'm strongly considering starting Tau because of these actually. I do have to echo Fluffy's question on which airbrush your using as well as (this is my own) what is your psi setting?

I use an aerograph airbrush (a cheap crappy $40 brush I picked up from the FLGS) I have considered upgrading for when I start some finer level work but we'll see. Also I generally set my PSI to 30

and here's the remaining 2 broadsides completed and a group shot of the squad






I currently have a firewarriors, drones and pathfinders undercoated and ready to go...

Let me ask but how did you learn so quickly to use that airbrush? I just got one and treat it like it is a snake ready to bite.

I have a cheap airbrush as well. Lots of people spend $200+ on just the airbrush and more than that on a compressor and then never put in the time needed to learn how to fully utilize it. I think Oily proves that it's the artist and not the brush that truly matters.

I actually accidentally dropped my cheap airbrush while I was cleaning it and had the needle cap off. Bent the needle and the tip. I found replacement parts on eBay and now it's working better than before.

Earlier today I was contemplating upgrading my airbrush to something better, but I think I'm going to stick with it until I can reach the standard Oily has with his cheap brush. I just need to spend more time actually using it.

I absolutely love how the Tau turned out and will be following this thread!

I just started using an airbrush this month and while absolutely loving it am not quite at the skill level you are Your blends are truely inspiring mate the transitions work really elegantly and it compliments the tau models. I too would love to see a tutorial from you personally, as I think your beginner view would be an awesome thing to follow. I have a feeling ima gona be spending quite a few hours in the garage tonight!..... But first some questions

What techniques are you following?
Preshading? then going dark to light? or light to dark?
when your blending is it simply say white then blue? or are you adding intermediatary steps of mixed white:blue?

I can understand what you feel about "saving time", the airbrush I've bought one year ago just now saves me from most of the tedious parts of painting...

Not saying I have your skill with it though, I wish I could do the same...

To answer a few questions...

- Yes, I am looking at doing a tutorial sometime, I'm slowly churning through a pathfinder squad and when they are done I can look forward to firewarriors.... (shouldn't have painted all the cool stuff first! rookie mistake!)
- For the blends the colours I use are vallejo Dark prussia blue, andrea blue, sky blue, white in that order, then highlight with GW Fenris Grey and I work from dark to light
- I don't preshade I airbrush the colours on and go back and black line with the GW black wash.
- I may be doing something for youtube in the future with the World's End Radio podcast...watch this space....

That troll is incredible! I've seen lots of nice work achieved on minis with an airbrush but you're really taking it to another level. Please do get some YouTube vids done!

I am just getting into airbrushing. Your work looks fantastic. I especially love the trolls mace fist smashing into the base. How you modeled the slate around it shows the finess you have as an artist.

Do you paint the pieces of your Tau individually and then assemble...or assemble and then paint?

I can't wait to see what you do with a smaller scale model like the FW and Pathfinders. My biggest issue is getting good results on their leg armor (and I use a regular brush to do it).

I don't have plans to paint a farsight but I am painting up a red chaos marine for my black crusade character

I assemble and then paint, unless there is a specific piece that is completely different (like my grey knights helmet/shoulder pads) but I try to assemble as much as possible before painting

First squad of Pathfinders are done now only like 50ish infantry to go

Wow, the paint scheme looks great on the infantrymen too !!

Only nitpicking is... you forgot - or deliberately didn't - assembling the markerlights on the carbines !?
