Palindrome wrote: My default position on GW's games these days is one of low expectations touched with a hint of cynicism. I think that this position will be justifed with regards to this game.
My feelings on the games over the years are actually a mixed bag - and less to do with GW than who they're licensing out to. For every Dawn of War or Space Marine that absolutely kicks butt, there's been a Rites of War or Fire Warrior to muddy the water.
For me, I can kinda see that the most recent Space Hulk was supposed to be a faithful representation of the board game - but to me that's a waste of videogame potential. If we want to play board games, we already have board games. As an example what made Dawn of War great was in large part the fact that your battles happened right there in front of you, and the battle raged as you made your decisions - time was a factor and there was a sense of urgency thanks to having to capture points to avoid falling behind. If they'd copied tabletop format and given us a turn-based version (oh look, there's Rites of War again!), it would've been another waste of potential and worse, an imitation of the 40k that already exists but without the same social aspect.
The game in this thread is already looking to be more promising simply by being an FPS in the setting, it's taking the premise and doing something that actually suits videogames, so I'm hopeful if not automatically convinced.

Well, having a video game version of a boardgame that's impossible to get for less than $200 and cuts out the setup time and distance problems makes the Space Hulk video game seem pretty worthwhile. Rites of War is also way, way different than 40k, and was a pretty fun Panzer General reskin.

'Cuts out setup time'.. ? Well, I suppose that is one positive thing that you could say about that game
Would have loved to have played Rites of War but could never get hold of it. Wasn't it quite similar to Chaos Gate?

I can see why Space Hulk might be a decent alternative *now*... but that's only thanks to artificial artifice on GW's part.
Rites of War was a pale shadow of a strategy game when you consider that games like Warcraft 1 and 2, Command and Conquer and even a predecessor of sorts - Shadow of the Horned Rat - had been around for years already. It might have been fun in its own right for anyone new to the genre but on its release it was using mechanics that were already dated and frankly felt uninspired for it. The fact that all the animations were stilted and quickly became repetitive didn't help.

but the are all RTS games, and as such (for me) not much fun
whereas turn based games are (again for me)
I think that's one good thing that has come out of the THQ collapse, GW putting out a bunch of licences so there are a wide variety of genres catered to

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Yep - missing the rounds exploding. Another problem is that the "Space Hulk" spoof animation sounds are running in my head when watching.. I can totally hear the Terminator talking to himself while walking
I'm excited regardless. I've played every game even Chaos Gate or Tau Firewarrior. I just love being able to get into the world of the game for a few hours and turn my brain off. As long as the genestealers don't hide in corners and shake like in Colonial marines I'll be happy.
Eagles soar, but weasels don't get sucked into Jet Engines.
That's a nice little pre-rendered trailer. Gets the vibe and atmosphere down, although I agree that the bolter sounds a little thin, especially given the enormous bore of the barrels in that video.
Considering that it's about the Deathwing it might be possible that it will feature terrain different from spaceship corridors. The original story was about an Imperial world controlled by a Genestealer cult, so there might be settlements, cult temples and so forth.

I love deathwing and a good fps but I would rather see a large scale rts instead. Dawn of war just did not fill that void for me. Oh well maybe I will get my fix from the whfb total war that is coming up.

Still a bit unsure as to how it will work as an fps, but I think it definitely could if they strike the right balance between atmosphere, enemy variety and level design.

Rites of war was essentially Panzer General with a 40k skin. PG is considered to be one of the best turn based strategies ever made. Comparing it to RTS games is disingenuous at best.
