The remake of Clash of the Titans didn't have any Titans in it, clashing or otherwise. The sequel had a Titan.

And this looks awesome. It'll probably be terrible, but who cares.

When do we get the one about Horus fighting The Emperor instead? That I would watch the hell out of!

If done right, it would be...epic.
But then they'd have to pay GW IP rights, and thats not going to happen.

Yeah... that was disappointing. Gerard Butler was the only person in that trailer who didn't make me feel like they were just phoning it in.

Fun fact: Most early trailer cgi is placeholder art. I can't watch the trailer on my phone but that's my guess at least to why the quality is lacking. Also this sounds like dumb popcorn fuel.

It totally is. It's Wrath of the Titans with Pyramids.

Wrath of the Pyramids would be a better title, followed by the sequel; Wrath of the Pyramids: Rock the Kasbah.

Honestly, the quality of the CGI is almost a nonfactor for me compared to how it is used. Harryhausen's stop motion is far less convincing than even primitive CGI, yet it is more captivating because of the artistry of it, and the personality of his creations. I'd rather watch some B5 or Last Starfighter space battles, with their "Book Cover Quality" CGI, than the big budget crap we got in the Star wars prequels.

That having been said, I don't see much charm in the trailer to redeem the effects.

Still, I love me some Tomb Kings Stargate Wargods of Young Sherlock Holmes. If they have a score anywhere near Waxing Elizabeth, I'll give the movie a huge pass.

To me, Old effects look more fake then the newer CGI effects.
CGI to me mostly looks good. But then again im not an old man who tries to pick apart anything new.

I generally prefer practical effects, but I don't mind CGI either I've seen it done well.

Think of the scene in empire strikes back after Luke gets he hand off. The initial falling (which is really old special effects, he's literaly copy-pasted over a model), CG does better, but after he;s actually in the tube the physical set makes it that much better.

Meh. I preferred Stargate. That movie's Egyptian "gods" at least had an ethnicity other than "pale blue British guy" and it also had Kurt Russel Kurt Russelling the heck out of everything.

This movie does not look like it will be very good, but that may be down to the ham-fisted way the trailer was edited. Thanks for showing us that the plucky comic relief character succeeds in his quest to steal Horus's eye from Set, thus sparing us from having to watch the first hour of this movie! I mean, why would I want to go to a movie without already knowing how the first two acts will play out? To be entertained? That's just crazy talk.

Sorta like Scorpion King.

I hope Nikolaj Coster-Waldau doesn't get typecast as the guy who gets bits of his body chopped off in fantasy movies.

Casting is pretty ropey. But I think you just have to treat this as a big daft summer fantasy movie with a vaguely Egyptian theme. I mean, it has Set associated with snakes, for starters, which is a borrow from Robert E. Howard, rather than from mythology. WHICH WILL MAKE IT AWESOME OBVIOUSLY because giant snakes + magic + loincloth-wielding barbarians is just a winning pulp combo.

Yer actual Egyptian god Set was renowned for stabbing up snakes, notably the snake god Apep (the baddie in Egyptian mythology, if you are not a pulp fantasy movie/book written by an American).

I recall different regions had different cosmogonies and different gods.

Being a god of Egypt doesn't mean that one is Egyptian, just that one is a God and rules over Egypt. The British Empire ruled over India for some time and they weren't Indian.

And it depends on the time period too. As the kingdom grew more centralized some local gods were combined into new powers, and ofc there's the fact that we actually couldn't read hieroglyphics until the discovery of the Rosetta stone. Our knowledge before that was from Greek manuscripts which described things as the Greeks understood them at the time. And ofc, Christians burned the library of Alexandria a few times so many scrolls were lost.

Not that different from old Germanic/Norse mythology, really. Our knowledge of that is mostly from Christian descriptions of pagan ways and Snorri's Edda which was written well after Christianity had swept over the north. Many would argue that Snorri's stories show a lot of influence from the new religion - Loki goes from careless but loyal trickster to a more sinister figure, for example, maybe because the stories needed a "devil" figure since the Christians had one.

Its really fun that a big blockbuster movie from the 90s has correctly cast their characters with people who fit that role.

There are definitely regional variations, and variations over time, but AFAIK Set = Serpent dates from 1920s Texas and not before.

I know that when I think about ancient Egyptian mythology, white dudes come to mind.

And when the gods where white, it made sense.

God is English (unless he/she is Morgan Freeman that day) so naturally one would assume pasty and white. This might lead contemporary people to naturally think all gods are thus inclined.

Of course they could have mixed some black Englishmen in there too but I guess this audition clashed with auditioning for James Bond that day.

Sure we can blame Hollywood, but don't forget the audience is the other part of the equation. People bitch and moan all the time but the numbers don't lie. For example Dredd 3D did terribly at the box office while absolute gak like Grown Ups 2 and Transformers 5 do quite well. The people that would go see a film with complete unknowns is incredibly small, but the amount that complain that movies don't use less known people is incredibly large.
