Always good to see another Guard player. Great work on salvaging that Vendetta!

Hey guys!
Thanks for kind words about the vendetta
I need your opinion on something, and i kinda think it works but at the same time its kinda heresy. Space marine heads on guard?
Now this guardsman isn't painted or prepped yet because im unsure, do you guys think it looks good or nah? The only reason im thinking about doing this is because my local gw wouldnt allow it if i just rocked up with loads of cool ass guardsmen with non gw heads + rucksacks etc . So i figured as long as their heads are mostly gw then i can go crazy on the rest of them.
But yea please let me know what you think!
EDIT: page 2. What an honour
It works tbh since they are on the heroic scale and the space marines aren't that much bigger than guardsmen to begin with. Maybe give your manager a call and ask him if you can have 3rd party heads on your guardsmen, you never know until you ask.
@ustrello
yeah, no I asked him and he said it was ok as long as the majority of the model is gw. but at the same time he said don't take the piss and stick loads of non gw stuff on them, so I will definitely still get some backpacks from kromlech and heads from Victoria minis, just not on the scale I would like, maybe if I feel fancy Ill get a FW upgrade pack.

Hey guys,
So i had my first go at priming some if the models i had just stripped with dettol, and if you ignore the fact i have no idea how to prime things with spray cans it came out pretty well.
I definitely used too much paint so it pooled in areas and cracked on the commander. But hey ho its a learning curve, so ill just stick him back in the dettol and try again.
One thing i will say is, its so freaking easy. it took like 10 seconds. Any guard player unsure about colour spray primer. Dont be, its the best thing to ever happen to me
Spray can priming is pretty easy once you get down to it. Just make sure you are a good distance away, about a foot or so, and make sure not to spray for too long. It is better to do short quick passes than long ones.
Excuse my poor Paint skills. On topic, I'd shy away from helmeted marine heads, but I don't understand why 3rd party heads is that big of a deal when the model is still a clear majority Cadian.

ahaha love it! but yeah no I definetly wasn't going to use helmeted marines. and yea don't worry I'm still gonna use 3rd party stuff, just not loads of it

Helooo
So ive been painting infantry. Lots of em.
But one thing ive noticed is that 2 key elements of each bloke, the base and the face, are areas that im crap at. So if any of you have any good ideas on basing and facing. (painting faces ) then please say.
I've followed the youtube video that gw released, so now the khakis are a lighter colour.
Tbh though im pretty pleased with how theyre turning out
I followed this really useful guide that gw has released on how to paint cadians.
but yeah, it was either zandri dust spray primer (on the models that had been stripped) or just out the pot zandri dust
then an aggrax earthshade wash,
then rebuild the zandri dust not going into the darkest recesses
then as a final highlight pick out the pointy bits with ushabti bone.
its fairly easy and it looks awesome!

Okay the dettol is driving me mad.
So much scrubbing for so little reward... its does get the majority of the paint off to be fair but its such a slog, and theres always black goopy bits all over the model, so ive given up.
I heard great things about fairy power spray so i went and bought some of that, but apparently theyve recently changed the formula and now it doesnt work for stripping paint....
Plz help me
Ok guys!
Did some snooping around for a better alternative and,
Where dettol has failed, amazon has delivered. Biostrip 20 everyone. Perhaps the greatest, easiest safest paint stripper ever!
2 guardsmen pictured, in there for 1 hour, and i just stuck em under the tap. Boom. Paint gone.
Its awesome, more expensive than dettol but 100x better. 10/10 so happy
Just to give you all a little heads up as to whats going on in the barracks this evening. Conversions is the word of the day, (along with biostrip<3)
From left to right you have
Catachan vox
Beardy sergeant
Grenade man mk2, (pondering what he could do with the mortar shell in his hand)
Empire state troop helmet? Nah thats a bucket hat mate
Beardy melta conversion + greenstuff toupé
And i love this conversion so much i gave him his own picture. "Chainsword doesnt work? A shovel will do. " - the infantrymens uplifting primer. Probably.
Lol anyways guys hope you like em, feedback would be nice. Untill next time!
We don't have Biostrip here in the US, and it makes me sad.
Faces, because we have to paint so many guardsmen, I just go with a light base color for the flesh, then stick a wash over it, then give the face some highlights.

nice work, for basing can I suggest you use little pieces of grey slate direct to the base glued in basically random intervals so no two bases are the same, get creative with characters, then a layer of stirland mud from the GW texture range, let this dry then drybush with karak stone, then when that's done a second very light drybush with a grey, and finally a light wash with nuln oil.
Once you've done that paint the rims in steel legion drab. try it on a test mini and see of you like the effect.
Hey guys just a tiny update, i painted the bases on these two guys earlier and for one of them i followed a YouTube tutorial, and for another i did what @sonny2dap said. If im honest they look almost exactly the same.
I think a bit more texture would be good, but otherwise i think they look pretty good
Another great basing channel is eonsofbattle I'd highly suggest them. Sadly it seems they have disappeared so I wouldn't expect anymore tutorials from them
@ustrello cheers man, yeah ive checked their channel, some really good stuff there.
@sonny2dap
Cheers, and thanks for the reply!
Oook, just a tiny update. I was thinking about buying some backpacks from kromlech, but then i just made some instead. Not too sure about them so id like some feedback.
heloo
alrighty guys, so I was inspired by the huge amounts of conversions and the like that veteran sergeant has done on his thread. seriously awesome stuff!
(the link to his thread) http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/437416.page so I decided i'd have a go, and to be honest I think some of the lasgun conversions I have done are pretty cool, the idea behind it was that because the regiment had been so long without resupply each guardsman had to keep modifying his gun to keep it working. Sadly I think that when put together they all just look a little out of place.
(ps I would fill the gaps etc before actually painting them I just wanted to know what you guys think.
Feedback? any ideas? to keep the force looking unsupplied and ragtag, but not too much?
cheers
Hello guys, sorry its been a long time, but I've been busy with studying etc, as exams are nearly here .
I haven't had any time to be painting unfortunately but I've been modelling a few guys and I'm pretty pleased.
so without further ado we have from left to right:
Bloke 1. Mr. GS goggles, I think that these are one of the easier sculpts I did, and to be honest I think that they look the coolest.
Bloke 2. I wasn't pleased with the rucksacks I made last time as they just looked too marine-y. so I made a GS Bergen with a bedroll on the top and tbhimo I think it looks rad and fits with the fluff.
Bloke 3. the giant of a man in the middle is called big john, I made him taller by sticking GS above his boots and at the waist. and gave him a stocky laspistol and a giant sledgehammer made from sprue and brass rod.
Bloke 4.then we have "the beard" lol this took me aages and doesn't look too great but I'm pretty pleased that I was brave enough to try and sculpt it.
ill try to slap some paint on them in the future.
EDIT: ive tried to rotate it like 5 times. sorry guys its not working, juust turn your laptops upside down or something
Hey man loving the greenstuff work you've got going on here
It's good to see when people put a lot of personality into their regiment. Im thinking of doing an small auxiliary/pdf force to support my marines when they're done
As I'll have loads of spare, bare marine heads (why wear all that power armour and no helmet? ) I'll definitely be nicking your idea of putting them on some guardsmen
I love the backpacks you made, how did you get to this result? I can see parts of SM back packs, IG bits but pouches and ammo?
Very nice green stuff skills too !
Cheers! I can do a tutorial if you want? just to clarify is it the GS one or the marine looking one you like? thanks for feedback

Pah! power armour is for wimps... But yes, a small IG force added on, not only suits the fluff, but looks cool as heck, even if they don't make it past turn 2.
