Here's some WIP photos. A couple hours in. Will probably be done soon. Just need to clean them up and do some final touches with acrylics now that my oil paint is about done.

Grim Dark Angels Interrogator-Chaplain

A Protoss colony world

"Are you frightened?"
"Yes."
"Not nearly frightened enough. I know what hunts you."

I think I've got an entry here that absolutely epitomizes the Fear theme: a few representatives of the Nazgul, the Nine Servants of the Dark Lord Sauron tasked with finding the One Ring. Here's the proof:

What's going to be tricky is making models that are basically all black look interesting. I've seen minimalist approaches taken with these models; basically just spray black, basecoat and shade the metallic bits, drybrush the cloaks, job's a good'un. But that really isn't good enough to me; I really want my Ringwraiths to pop. I saw a cool tutorial on Youtube on a really nice method to paint these models and I'll probably start with that, assuming I can find it again.

I also wanted to get my only mounted Nazgul in there for variety, but he's more of a stretch goal assuming I can get the others done.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2023: 40 | Total models painted in 2024: 7 | Current main painting project: Dark Angels

Ooooh not sure what to do yet. It'll probably be some Flesh Eaters of some sort, but that may change if the AoS box arrives in the post this week

What would you guys recommend as a cloak for the ork I showed earlier? Can I get a decent cloak with contrasts (maybe the bone one, as the brown is a bit dark), or should I do my older method of mournfang brown > heavy drybrush XV88 > light drybrush ushabti bone? Mixed method of contrast wyldwood, drybrush XV88 then bone? Or would it be okay to do some crazier color, like red?

Pic of the cloak, I can't remember what it's from, maybe the old empire knight box?

Hmmmm, what story would you like to tell through this mini? Is this some weird alien beastie fur that your boss is showing off, or much rather a crusty thing that he dragged through a couple dozen battlefields by now? Does he belong to a specific ork clan?
(Can't say much about specific GW colors unfortunately as I don't use them myself)

Spoiler:

Never tried contrast fur myself, but my instinct would be that it would be quite light at the tips of the fur spikes compared to drybrushing. I'd also guess that you can make patterns in the fur more easily with drybrushing.

Carnivorous, angry, able to burrow up behind you… I think Ambulls are worth being afraid of. They certainly get centre stage as a scary thing in BSF.

Gives me an opportunity to go back to my BSF stuff that I never got around to finishing, and also now that I have a slightly better idea of what I’m doing with the airbrush I can try out some more advanced OSL.

So proof picture

And straight into some progress

Trying for a blue up light from the floor to match my other BSF bases (example below), and a sickly green from behind. I was also thinking of going for some kind of glow from the eyes, but that might be too much.

I think the base coats of the different sources has gone in fine, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend whether to do the lighter highlights with the airbrush, or whether it’s better from this point to go to hairy brush to do some highlights and, god forbid, a bit of blending?

Example bases on my traitor guard

Even compared to the Chaplains of most other Chapters, the Interrogator-Chaplains of the Unforgiven not only instil fanaticism and absolute loyalty in their brothers, but are also surrounded by a palpable Aura of Dread.

Enough motivation for me to finally get to finish my conversion of a Ravenwing Primaris Chaplain:

Still very much work in progress, but I hope I'll get it done this month.

@ms07b3 - love the sister. Good level of bling, nice chipping, and the candles are great. Keep it up!

After my less than effective use of airbrush on smaller targets I have decided to go the hairy brush route here on in.

The little critters will be well lit:

Mummy will be rather more lurky:

I’please probably take the facial highlighting up one more level to close to white just in a few spots.

From the rear, not quite sure yet how to highlight the green to get a glowy effect. I may go hunting on YouTube.

From below. Planning on doing a few brighter highlights lower down as if being uplit.

And the thing doing the up lighting

I might have to change mine, as the Delaques now look like they may not arrive until the end of the month. Looking a what models I have left to paint this month to find an alternate. Might do three old metal Spyer Hunters and the two Pit Slaves are started this month.

Cheers,

RAWR! Nomnomnom...

So the main draw is the haruspex, as he’ll just eat his way though your army. He’s even got a strat “grisly feast" about being a messy eater that adds to nearby morale tests. Good ol’ visceral “It’s gonna EAT ME!” fear. Visually the more terrifying of the pair. The Exocrine on the other claw, might not look as bad, but can double-shot bio-plasma across the table and melt whole squads into puddles of goo. Not too shabby.

So less fun painting this guy then the flyrant. He’s got a lot of things that bump against my paint scheme. Red=claws and guns, but his knuckles don’t have nice demarkation lines like most nids. So I had to fudge a little on where the skin stops and the claw starts. Similar things with some of the sinews around the mouth. What’s skin? What’s fang? Where’s the line? Contrast paints work like a charm, and get these guys done in rapid order.

Overall still nice to get him done. He’ll add another big bug to the swarm, either as a midfielder, or backfield support.

Here's where I'm at. I might change the photos later or update the model if I'm feeling it but if not, this is pretty satisfactory for me.

Started off with an airbrush of basic acrylic colors in areas. Did some work on the skin in acrylics then went into oils. Used a mix of Abteilung and Windsor newton artist series oil paints. I'm officially in love with Cadmium Green by W&N! Best neon green oil paint...

Thank you Turaxa! I've been trying to do some fun and quick low effort paints lately just to keep myself going while I struggle with other stuff. It's not perfect... though I guess I'm not sure what else I could do really.

The details on the models are amazing, given that you can see individual button holes where the skirt separates over the leg armour. Amazing. The hair looks awesome, but seems a bit impractical

Thanks, My sisters of battle army used a lot of Japanese anime style heads. It is hard for me to maintain the same style with GW parts now.
