Not sure if this fits the rules but I am going to say The Thing (2011).

Technically it's a prequel, but it's also a reboot at the same time, and came out after....

I actually really enjoyed it. Loved that it was very faithful to the original but, despite being an obvious reboot, did actually bring new stuff to the original.

My only gripe is the last minute decision to replace all of the practical effects for CGI. Apparently there is a full edit with the practical effects that I would love to see.

I saw some of that edit a while back, and I have to say it was creepy and cool. The CGI had its flaws, and without the rose-tinted glasses the practical effects did too. I think about 90% of viewers would have preferred the practical effects, and that's before facgtoring in fans of the original getting nostalgia. Honestly though, if they'd have gone about 90% practical, with 10% CGI to fill in some gaps it would have been perfect.

Escape from LA. I saw it in theaters as a kid, not knowing about Escape from New York.

Overall I think it's alot more fun, better characters, and a better ending.

Another favorite of mine was always Army of Darkness.

Sure Evil Dead 2 had the better story, and Evil Dead was gorier. But Army of Darkness was a lot more fun, and Ash as a character has some of the best lines.

People are all talking up Rogue One, but when I was a kid my favorite Star Wars movie was Return of the Jedi.

I thought it was way better then Empire Strikes Back.

I think Empire stands the test of time to this day because its dramatic moments get paid off so well in Jedi.

Gremlins 2 is one of the greatest sequels of all time.

Short Circuit 2 is a classic.

Tremors 2 is somehow even more fun than Tremors.

Police Academy 2-4 are the peak of the series, assuming g you watch them as a child.

This is my thread, and even I don’t know if this really counts.

Carry On Screaming

A low budget but delightful and pretty respectful send up of the Hammer and Amicus efforts. It’s consistently funny and there’s a lot of silliness and decent banter.

However, the Carry On films (apart from Carry On Again Doctor) aren’t exactly a shared universe etc. But it is one from the middle of that particular era.

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army has a great villain and they really let Guillermo loose to explore fairytale creatures and settings, I love it.

I would say it's indeed the best movie in the franchise in my opinion.

While Rogue One is my favorite Star Wars full length movie, The Last Jedi is my favorite movie from "the big nine" and Revenge of the Sith was actually pretty darn good if extremely campy and hammy.

I haven't thought about Gremlins in ages! Man, that was high quality. The civilized Gremlin discussin their desire for civilization was fantastic.

Wayne's World 2 was better than the first movie, and Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey was better than Excellent Adventure.

And a TV series starring Commander Cash.

Agreed.

Wayne’s World 1 has a lot of great scenes, but nothing that reaches the bittersweet heights of the Gordon Street scene. Ah yes, Gordon Street.

+1 to Escape from LA. John Carpenter + Kurt Russell always = Solid Gold.

(I can't pick a favorite between the Evil Dead movies though. They're both great, just in different ways.)

Ghoulies 2 is actually fun where Ghoulies (1) is pretty boring.

House 2: The Second Story is more-or-less kid-friendly classic, sequel to a decent horror movie.

Hellboy 2 > Hellboy
Terminator 2 > Terminator (obviously)
Tremors 2 > Tremors
sort of a sequel, lord of the rings the two towers is better than the fellowship of the ring, though this kinda doesn't count.

Mad Doc Grotsnik’s post in the reviews thread reminded me:

TMNT 2. The first might actually be a better movie, but the second one was way more fun. Not only do we get some baddie mutants, but a Vanilla Ice song about Ninjas. Ninjas going. Go, ninjas, go.
