Luna's right on this. Look at the size of all the Planetstrike terrain and the price they could sell those at relative to the army models. I worked with plastic molding in my career. A piece the size of a single tile could be produced at $0.15 a piece, as long as you ordered 30K or more. The larger pieces wouldn't increase the cost that drastically. The amount of labor that goes into the part is the same regardless of size, so the main limitation is material cost. But material cost is not the issue since plastics are generally cheap.

GW's main problem is they have such large overhead, that despite a revenue of $120,000,000 they only made $7,000,000 profit. They're largest costs were overhead.

Mh...I'm not really thrilled honestly.
Plastic tiles would be a bonus and useable for regular 40k (non-standard missions).
The models look nice, but the scenic bases (especially on the genestealers) make them harder to convert to 40k.

I will probably test out that game in my local shop and see the models in person before I shell out 80€. Even if tis is what GW seems to prevent with a limited run and the hyping.

My opinion is that the rules are the 1st edition plus the Deathwing and Genestealer expansions. That's based on the type of dice, egg timer (1st edition) and the presence of Libby and Broodlord (magic.)

They may have tinkered with it a bit. I haven't looked closely enough to see if grenade launchers and assault cannons feature.

It's definitely closer to the 1st edition rules because it uses regular D6's instead of those horrible 'shooting dice' they had in 2nd edition and (thank god) they went back to a single large blast marker for flamers rather than flaming individual board sqaures like they did in 2nd edition.

Also the return of the timer = 1st edition.

But I wouldn't necessarily jump the gun on the Deathwing/Genestealer (the two 1st edition Space Hulk expansions for those too young to know) bandwagon.

If you'll remember, they introduced VERY limited rules in the first expansion (Deathwing) for using Librarians. Basically the only thing their psychic power did was allow them to alter their rolls in close combat (or something like that). It is entirely possible that they stuck with something more along those lines for the Librarian in this game.

Obviously the inclusion of Lightning Claws and Thunderhammer Terminators means they've definitely included those rules from Deathwing (or come up with new ones maybe).

Anyway, I know almost everyone universally hated the psy-power system in Genestealer, so I'm confident that we won't see anything like that in this game. I think it is much more likely that they just came up with some new rules for psychics for the Librarian.

On the subject of Assault Cannons....

In the contents pic, the ammo and CP tracker does indeed have an Assault Cannon section, and unless my eyes deceive me, I think an Assault Cannon armed Terminator can be seen on the board itself. Kind of hard to be sure though.

GW's overhead is mainly the retail chain, and also the studio.

It's amazing how many staff there are in the studio when you look at the low rate of output of new models and books.

But they have 100s of retail shops.

Well when GW turns into a car company then maybe you'll have a point. But even then I have to disagree with you...

Umm, clearly you didn't read the rest of what I said. I believe they are doing themselves a disservice by not handling their launches with enough build up time. Controlling the information that gets out about a corporation's new properties, that's pretty common, with car companies being the far extreme. It gets out when they want it to. GW did, in my opinion, make a poor call about when it gets out and how. Comments like "I couldn't tell you" and "Why would we do that?" are par for the course and open denial when pressed is nothing new. Was it dumb, I think so. Could it keep people on the fence from buying it, yep. But people Feeling lied to and angry just sounds childish to me. Like the people who say Michael Bay and Steven Summers >destroyed< their childhood.

Now being angry when it sells out in six hours and there are no more, that's really dumb on their part and a bit more understandable on the part of the customer. And probably due to happen in...

I think they have an oversized company for what they produce.
Their other big cost is shop lifting. $1,800,000 a year, almost a third of their profit. They have 360 retail outlets. So maybe they don't need as many as that.

I actually agree here, except for the tyrannids thing.

As for nostalgia - the game was fun to play but it just wasn't that good. ... ...

You're kidding, right?

How did Space Hulk make the list of 100 Best Hobby Games if it wasn't that good.

Original, first edition Space Hulk was a bloody brilliant game. It started to go downhill once magic was introduced. Second edition was a much worse game.

Not kidding at all. It was fun, but in comparison to more modern games I play it just doesn't stand up. If I had a spare afternoon to play a board game SH would be about the 100th choice I pulled out to play. No way of knowing, but I would love to know how many people still play this game on a regular basis (say once a quarter or even bi-annually).

100 Best Hobby Games - not exactly a huge selling comparison there, that is quite a small pond. What number was it? I am willing to bet very good money that games like AA, M44 and Ticket to Ride would outsell SH at the height of its popularity and continue to do so on a yearly basis.

SH is a very enclosed game, with limited appeal outside the hobby (especially at $100 price point) and once the mainly older community has bought it and those younger people encouraged to do so this game will once again die back down and within a year to 2 years will be gather dust on many shelves. It really doesn't have the staying power of more main stream board games.

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games.

Copy write law. The same thing that keeps you from remolding and producing duplicates of miniatures. Printing out a PDF you have no write to or permission to is the 2-D equivalent.

Theft of Intellectual Property perhaps?

But of course, this is the Internet, the place where you 'stick it to the man' by stealing stuff. Which isn't criminal, because rather than being a thieving little tosspot, you're 'sticking it to the man'.

The man who paid to produce the goods, and deserves to reap the rewards of his investment. Unless of course someone wants to 'stick it to the man' in which case it's fine. Because you're 'sticking it to the man'

1st Edn Space Hulk is still one of my favourite games, and I'm very glad to still own it and most of the bits for the 2 expansions. I say that as someone who's been gaming for more than a quarter-century & owns probably over 100 boardgames, including most of the must-have Euro-type games. I'd say that Space Hulk has more tactical depth than most Euro games (there are notable exceptions).

GW's overhead is mainly the retail chain, and also the studio. It's amazing how many staff there are in the studio when you look at the low rate of output of new models and books. But they have 100s of retail shops.

There are about 360 GW shops around the world and overhead is quite high for rent, electricity, staff and more. Overhead adds up so fast for things like electricity that just small changes save a lot of money. US GW shops have removed most of the halogen lights from the store miniature display cabinets. I've heard that will save about $12K/year alone. New stores are getting only one cabinet each and that comes from existing stores, preventing the need to purchase more cabinets for years to come.

I enjoy having GW shops around and I enjoy their products. I also enjoy many members of their staff and have made some lasting friendships with some staff members over the years. I support the shops and company I like in this case like I would any other company whose products I enjoy or a great independent game shop. I provided some support for GW again by purchasing Space Hulk today and I'm quite looking forward to opening the box in a few weeks. It looks like a great big box of fun and I'm looking forward to some board game 40K when and with people with whom the tabletop game is not practical.

Ordered mine. Very nearly bought two, 'cause the minis look FANTASTIC

The minis look fantastic. I know a lot of people are complaining that the tiles aren't plastic, which I agree would have been nice, but it feels like they took that time to make these minis something special.

Can't wait for the Sept 5th.

So let me get this strait, the minis are standard size and excelently modeled... but they are made out of red and blue plastic, WTF what were they thinking. Does any one have any idea if the plastic is like normal minis so you can convert it without destroying them? Were the models that they painted up even made of the same plastic? I'm not completely angry at them I just want to now if it would be worth it to buy this for the models so I could add them to my army.

I was a little surprised by the lack of an electronic timer mentioned on several Web sites.

Apologies if the news below is old to Dakka users. The program mentioned was updated in April therefore the news is not as old as The Emperor.

If you place a laptop computer beside a game of Space Hulk, you can have an electronic timer. There is a nice computer program on BoardGameGeek for Space Hulk.

But...but....the mini's are meant to be painted, so the base plastic colour shouldn't matter, surely?
