Ok, guys! Pariahs are done. Well, mostly done. I still have to add another coat of sand to the base and paint over any smeared paint on the bases, but other than that: finito. If I spelled that right.

Here's a closeup of one. The ends of the warsythes are outrageously fragile at the joint at the green "coils"... terrified that the weakened pewter would snap, I went about to the task of filing down the green rods at just the right length to let them slide in instead of fasten in. Of course, they're PVA glued... but I just wish it looked less like a mess. I really love the way the crests and faces on the models worked out, and the color scheme on the shoulderpads.

And here's all of them. You can probably see the one pariah who came out a bit slowed from the tomb-forge, after GW decided to send me a model with his warscythe half-molded. But all in all, I do like the way they turned out. They were just an outrageous amount of work.

Now, on to my spare necron warriors. I ordered a box of ground-pounders a while back with my pariahs, and now I'm filling the ranks of shootiness, after I am beginning to realize what a point sink any trump cards become.

Quinn's Eldar had arrived (-did I mention that before?) yesterday and we've been trying them out. He just got a bunch of troops and no vehicles, but he's working on picking up the rules. And He's getting E to paint them. I mean, I think it's not going to feel like *your* army if you didn't pour your soul into painting it, but at least it's better than the factory paint scheme of "Don't-Give-A-S*** Grey". Whatever. The Necrons will harvest them regardless.

What kind of Eldar units did Quinn get? No vehicles is a bad call IMHO, Mech Eldar can be deadly. They have one of the best Infantry Fighting Vehicles in the game, the Wave Serpent. Most of their infantry is pretty squishy though, and Guardians can't shoot to save their own lives.

This is pure awesome.

In my opinion the army should strike a deal with GW to provide miniatures to soliders. I know it might sound kinda silly at first but all of my friends who got shipped out have universally told me how boring it is, and when it isn't boring it's so damn intense that you just need some good relaxing distractions afterwards. tabletop wargamming seems a perfect fit for that. I mean, you military guys know warfare and tactics, it's what you do. Plus tabletop games build friendships and allow for group fun which is good for building team work. Another benefit is that it doesn't require internet connections, electricity (generators can be expensive to run) or much else but the models and impromptu terrain. I think most soldiers would really enjoy tabletop wargaming, even the ones who would initially scoff at it as nerdy.

so heres my vote that if my tax dollars have to go to putting people in harms way against the wishes of the majority of the population, i want at least some of that money to go to giving those soliders a bit of fun.

While that would be awesome, it would also make all the hippies and military-haters become apopleptic with RAGE at seeing their tax dollars buying plasticrack for military personnel. Since I am one of said military personnel, I think its a KICKASS idea, if only for the trollface value

You're missing the point, Corvus. Why wouldn't someone who doesn't support war prefer it going to little plastic men? Logically, dollars spent on space marines are dollars NOT spent on bombs. Don't mean to derail the thread, but that's my 2 cents. Regardless of what you think of the war, there's nothing wrong with giving the troops something to do that's relaxing and social for their downtime.

Well, I've been having a lot of internet issues lately. I've had to switch from one serve and then back to the other in the span of two months because neither of them can seem to learn how to perform maintenance on a hub that connects the population of a large hamlet.

I had a match with the XO last night, and it was actually dangerously close to beating him. He had at several points offered to resign, after I dropped his land raider, his Dreadnaught, both his terminator squads and his command squad. But in the end, he got me on phase-out with his Devastator Cannon. I took pictures, but forgot to take notes, and since I've slept since then, I've forgotten many of the details. Plus, battles between me and the XO have become so routine, we barely talk: "Lascannon." "Unh." "Miss." "Krak missle... hits... wounds." "Saved."

E made up a new gameboard for a volcanic planet yesterday, and I'm eager to try it out. And eager to stomp Quinn's Eldar.

I did learn some lessons from yesterday's funtime:

1. Divide your warriors in to as small as squads as possible, that way they can't be mowed down as easily, or half of your army wiped in an assault, and they can still get their WBB if they are near each other.
2. Keep the Pariahs in the back just so that they can join an assault with dreadnoughts or terminators while they are occupied with your warriors.
3. Wraiths... uh... I'm thinking about not using these guys anymore.
4. The nightbringer should be doing as much as he possibly can to just tear the army a new one, assault-style, and should make vehicles, terminators and power-weapon wielders it's priority. Let everyone else shoot the jeebus out of it. It still explodes when it dies, and it will keep some of the heat off of your monolith and phase-out units.
5. Keeping all of your guys spaced out 1 1/2" severely limits the amount of models the opponet can hit with template weapons. Orbital bombardment? Ha!

It was actually an incredibly close game, and I was a hair away from tabling the XO before he got me on phase-out on turn 7. Bah!

Maybe we'll get a rematch tonight. We'll see. And this time I'll try to take notes.

Hello again! I'm still pretty busy a lot of the time with work. I do still have some time to hang out with the WH crew however. The painting and modeling is still coming along slowly. I do have a question concerning my Predator I have yet to assemble. I would like to have the power of lascannons on it but is it worth the points? Would the autocannon be enough firepower against vehicle type targets? Also I have an unassembeled Devastator squad. So another question is do I invest the points in the squad with lascannons and missle launchers and have a regular Pred or go for the Pred with lascannons and forget the Devs?

This is going to be an interesting one.

First off, XO is Executive Officer, as Porksulime suggested. Ever seen Star Trek? He's like Commander Will Ryker. Except he plays 40K, smokes, and doesn't have a beard. He takes care of the more administrative and logistical stuff while the CO does more of the command decisions, politics, and planning.

Well, the XO suggested that in order to prove that Necrons weren't so nerfed that they couldn't beat his space marines, he switched armies with me for a match, and proved himself right. We played a 2000 point game, and He went with a Destroyer Lord with a rez orb and a warscythe, a full squad of pariahs, 'Lith, Nightbringer, and 40 warriors in two squads.

Starting out. I basically took the same setup he beat me with yesterday, except swapped points for the ironclad dreadnought and gave it a lascannon with the points instead. Standard Annihilation. XO rolls to go first.

End of Turn 1.

XO advances everything, bringing his D.Lord and Destroyers up on my right and drops two marines from my right squad. My soda-can/drop pod of assault terminators drops next to one of his troop squads. I fire lascannons from the squads, land raider, and dreadnought at the 'lith and stun it. My Vindicator scatters off a bit on one of the squads and only drops 5 necrons.

End of Turn 2.

The XO turbo-boosts his D.Lord squad to the land raider. He pulls back all of his warriors in range of the terminators. He runs the Pariahs and the Nightbringer towards it as well. He shoots and assaults into combat with the terminators, and drops 2. He loses several warriors in the proscess.

I focused my infantry fire on the destroyer squad, and dropped two destroyers that didn't come back. The Vindicator takes out 2 pariahs and 6 warriors, and the land raider stuns the monolith again with it's lascannons. In assault I drop a few more models while he gives my chaplain a wound.

End of Turn 3.

He uses the monolith to warp the necrons locked in close combat. He then advances some more, drops one of the terminators with a lightning arc from the Nightbringer, and the D.Lord's warscythe explodes the vindicator, taking one of the Destroyers with it. I'm left with one assault terminator left.

The next soda can/drop pod arrives, and out come the regular terminators. I drop the D.Lord with infantry fire, explode his monolith with a land raider lascannon (lucky!), and drop a handful of his warriors with the stormbolters on the drop pods and the newly arrived terminators, I also engage the warriors with my last assault terminator, take out one model, and he himself goes down.

End of Turn 4.

From combined fire from the bulk of his forces, most of my terminators die. The Necron Destroyer lord rezzed and assaults my regular marines, taking a couple down.

I continue to fire with my land raider at the necron warriors and drop a few, and bring my vanguard assault marines to attack the D.Lord, and drop it again. I completely forgot to fire the drop-pod mounted storm-bolters.

End of Turn 5.

The Necron Lord rezzes again and He advances his pariahs and the nightbringer, while repositioning the rest of his warriors. The warriors shoot at and kill the last terminator. This D.lord assaults my vanguard marines but is dropped again before he gets a chance to attack.

I try to advance some droops and take what shots I can, but only end up dropping one pariah.

End of Turn 6.

His D.Lord rezzes again and destroys my dreadnought. I make potshots and try to advance but I am out of any serious range and roll poorly.

Game ends.

SUMMARY: Huh. ....huh. Either the dice gods do not favor me or the XO is a much better tactical player than I am (or both). I don't know how this could have turned out any differently. Though I will say I have more fun playing Necrons. ...there really isn't that much to say, honestly. Though I think his option for a Destroyer Lord was unique and may have won him the game, which is cool, because I took the idea and used it to pwn Gwar in a Vassal game today.

I'm not going to shelve my necrons. Not yet. I don't mind if I keep losing. At least it's better than sitting in my can and watching bootleg durkistani dvds.

And for those of you commenting on military pay: It's not that bad for enlisted if you get a "housing allowance," which is depending on how many children you have, around an extra $1K a month. But the only way you can get that and not be forced to live in the barracks (dorms) and live like a drunken stiupid child is to either get promoted to E-6 (which takes years), or to get married. That money is often a motivation for a lot of bad marriages in the army. And the cause of a great deal of emotional pain... because the system is set up to make soldiers put themselves at risk so that they can attempt to live a normal life like normal men. Because contrary to popular belief, the army doesn't make men. It makes overgrown adolescents who learn to do nothing but suckle the government teat and, akin to Orks, beat down everyone underneath you simply because you're pissed that those above it did it to you when you were low-ranking. And some of them who outrank you still do. Seriously, it's no place for a functioning adult.

Sorry to hear about the loss. But you have the right idea! Play as long as it's fun, and winning or losing doesn't matter. Your dour comments about the army have further convinced me that the military is not the place for me. I played against Kehrer's Tau today, and barely won, thanks to my new application of a warscythed destroyer lord (cleverly disguised as a Heavy Destroyer ) and a warscythe on my necron lord. While his broadsides exploded my lith in one turn, my efforts to continually harass his pathfinders, sniper drones, and other vehicles with warscythed lords ended up wrecking him. He wasn't a pushover, though. He loads his army up with powersuits and was consistently trying to tie up every unit he could by assaulting with them, and broadsiding everything else. And it nearly worked. I suggested he should introduce Kroot and Vespids to round out his forces more so that his troops aren't so helpless to fast attacks and assaults, but he says he avoids them because they have little or no armor saves. That amazed me. REALLY? The Tau's tarpitting forces get dropped on every wound rolled? Jeez. Maybe he is better off with the power suits.

Our First Sergeant, while he avoids the game itself like the plague, lest he be sucked into the nerd vortex, has been steadily painting some of XO's models to be his "honor guard" or whatever. He's all army, all the way, so of course he paints Ranger tabs on their pauldrons. It gives him something to do, I guess. Everyone gets bored out here.

My immortals will be arriving any day now, and I'll probably be buying a Destroyer Lord next... and after that... maybe start on Tyranids?

Actually, no. I used all modeling sand that came with the starter kit. For the nightbringer, I just painted a deep blue/gray and drybrushed lighter gray over it.

A lot of the other guys, however, do base their models in Iraqi sand, including the irregular micro-pebbles that show up, looking as rocks on the base. Interesting looking, but seeing as how I wanted a true, barren dead-world feel, I thought the texture of the modeling sand would simply be the best/easiest choice. It's dust and crumble free, and consistent. If I were to do another army, and go for maybe a more savannah/rocky feel, or maybe an rocky alien type soil, I don't see how that would be a bad idea.

But a lot of other guys just use Iraqi sand because they see no reason to go out and buy modeling sand when sand of some kind is out here. And map boulders? We've got golf-ball sized gravel everywere out here.

EDIT: I'm also constantly tossining around ideas for a name for my army. I was thinking - egyptian, evil, ancient secrets... maybe like H.P. Lovecraft's "Nyarlotep" malign god?

Congrats on the win. One thing your Tau friend must not realize is that kroot come in a bbbbiiiiiiiiiiigg old blob. Add some hounds, a gunner, and possibly a shaper, and you got yourself a good unit. Vespids are good simply for some str. 5 AP. 3 fire.

@ Corvus; I'm sure you're right. The limited exposure I have had to the air force and the coast guard have both left a positive impression upon me. Time and time again, sorry OP, the army doesn't look so wonderful.

Just found this forum post and for some reason I am extremely intrigued (guess I never wondered how you guys occupy your free time over there). Consider yourself subscribed. BTW as a US citizen, thanks again for your service.

As a Tau player myself, you may want to let your Tau friend know that Kroot are one of his most important assets. I primarily use them as meat shields but they are UBER cheap. An ideal unit of Kroot would be 10 Kroot and 5 Kroot hounds (I-5 and 2 attacks each for the hounds). I generally have at least 2 of these units in any sized army. Deploy them around your more important units (Crisis Suits, Tanks, Firewarriors) to prevent Outflankers and Deep Strikers and if an Assaulty army comes at you throw your Kroot in their face and maneuver your shooters to annihilate them once they're done with the Kroot. They are speed bumps, but they are cheap and effective. Crisis Suits, Railguns and Kroot are the bread and butter of any Tau army (that wins)...

Of course you could withhold this info if you wanna keep winning heheh...
