Depends on what you want for playstyle -
American Tanks: Can't really comment on them much as I have not played them. They seem to fall in between the Russian and German tanks in thier roles. Generally good turrent armor, cruddy hull armor, decent guns, mediocre speed.
SPGs: German Hummel is pretty easy to get to and is a quick little bugger, but the Russian S-51 and SU-14 have the biggest guns in the game, they are a grind though.
TDs: Germans have the best overall TDs tier for tier from the Stug on up, but the top tier Russian (ISU-152) has probably one of the best non-SPG guns in the game, pretty light armor though.
Light/Scout Tanks: German Leopard is king of the scouts hands down.
Medium Tanks: Russian T-44 is probably the best medium on the field. It's fast, manueverable, has a nice gun, and pretty nice armor. German Panther is good, but is more of a sniping tank.
Heavy Tanks: Russian IS series is great at closing the range and knife fighting with other heavies. German Tigers, Maus and mini Maus are ranged sniper tanks that typically work better from a defensive position.
Generally German tanks want to be far away and sniping the enemy while the Russians want to get in close and mix it up. There are of course exceptions.

I gave up on American tanks. I didn't make it into the Shermans opting for the heavy line first. The T1 and M6 are just huge targets. Their guns and hit points are strictly medium tank worthy. Their armor is the low end for heavies and they aren't fast. Oh, and their the size of an office building laying on its side. Things might get better later but between the M3 Lee, T1, and M6 I can't grind 100k XP+ worth of just gak tanks.
Good news though, soft wipe coming up in December some time. You'll be refunded all your XP, the full cash value of your tanks, ammo, and modules, as well as the gold value of your extra tank slots, premium account in progress, and 100% tankers. So you essentially get a complete do-over.
Personally I'm getting a tricked out Tiger, my StuG III, and probably my T-34/57. I'm not wasting my time with the American line (sucks ass so far), artillery (whack a mole might be something I do in release but for now I'm going to focus in on getting a KT and hopefully T-44 before release), or light tanks. My stable should be a Marder II, StuG III, T-34/57, VK3601(H), and Tiger after the soft wipe. We'll see how much XP I have left over after that but given that I've got ~300k XP right now I think I might have the XP to get into a full on KT and still get my TD's and T-34. That's the biggie for me. I've got the XP to go all the way to a King Tiger, but I don't know if I'll be able to get the TD's as well. We'll see, I may just sideline the T-34 for a while and see if I have the XP to trick out a KT and still get a StuG III. A VK3601(H), King Tiger, and StuG III wouldn't be a horrible stable.

Oh interesting. . .may use that to try out a different branch of arty than Russian.
Not that the Russian is bad.

I've heard some good stuff about the Easy 8.
The problem with the American line is that it's such utter gak. The M3 Lee, T1 heavy, etc. The core of the German line is the Pz IV, VK3601, StuG III, the Russians you've got the T-34. You've got some good fun tanks right there in the middle before getting to the even better stuff. The American line strands you in junk for three solid tiers.

Yeah, if you wind up at the top of the list in a low tier game you're pretty much death on treads to lights or low end mediums just because of your armor and pile of hit points. In a game where you're strickly middle of the pack you're just a free kill for higher end mediums or true heavy tanks.

The development tree illustrates level-up paths for each of the five classes of French vehicles available in the game, including some prototype models, and provides an overview of premium and captured tanks.
French roster features a unique mixture of slow but powerful heavily-armored pre-war vehicles and fast, maneuverable, but rather vulnerable wartime machines, offering an ample array of gameplay styles and tactics to choose from.
"With French vehicles, we are going to take another step further in expanding World of Tanks armored fleet, drawing new tank enthusiasts into the game and providing more extensive gameplay options for those already playing," said Victor Kislyi, CEO of Wargaming.net. "We believe that more than 50 new machines will add extra depth and variety to World of Tanks battles, bringing even more fun to our players."

They absolutely can. Going 1v1 against aT32 or T34 (American superheavy, not the Russian medium) in my KT is a losing proposition most of the time. Even T29s are a pain if I don't have my 105 equipped. With the upcoming armor adjustment to them though, this may change.

French tanks huh, because when I think of WW2 tanks of course I think of the french. Should've been the english if anything seeing as though many nations didn't make well known tanks outside of Russia, Germany, the US, and the UK.

Sure, every tree does, but you're talking about single tanks or tanks with poor initial weapons. When you get to the American tree it doesn't get good until you get to the T29 or Easy 8. Imagine if the German trees were total ass until you got in a Tiger or VK3002. Or the Russians until you were in an IS or T-34/85. American tanks are just a fething slog until you are almost maxed out in them, then you can get your hands on some solid tanks with good weapons. Personally I am not going to put up with the grind to a T29 or Easy 8, I play for fun and that is something the American tanks are sorely lacking in until late in the tree.
The higher American Heavies look like they can hold their own against an IS or Tiger of same level although I dont observe too much so correct me if I'm wrong
The T29 is an excellent tank and the T32 and 34 are beasts. They've got their weaknesses, light hull armor, but they do just fine regardless since their hull is nice and low like an IS's. Most of your American heavy drivers are learning to use the terrain to hide their hulls and only expose their turrets which are about as productive to shoot at as a Maus'.
wow did not know that the next line isnt British or a 2nd axis power but The French (oh god their forums will fill up)! Interesting to see what they'll think of besides slow as heck early war tanks
Yeah, that one caught me by surprise. I get that the British line is going to have a lot of cross over with the US, but they've got a lot of their own stuff and the Sherman Firefly would be a beast. The French line is a lot like the Russian, a lot of post war stuff which make me as a German player nervous.
Seriously, the T-55... they're giving the Russians the T-55? WTF?

On the T-54/55, at first I was wondering if the developers had lost their minds, especially introducing it as a "medium" tank, but looking at the stats, it's not overly scary. It's fast and has great armor, but the gun is pretty lame...not quite as powerful as the German long 88. On a Tier9-10 medium I can see it working if you take into consideration their plans on refining match-making. Most likely it will be facing mostly Tier 8 plus tanks, unlike the current situation where you have Tier 8s running against Tier 2s. I am kind of floored that they are planning on buffing the IS-4 even more in the next patch. I can't understand where that's coming from. I think we'll just have to sit back and see how it goes. The new clan system that they are proposing looks very interesting as well.

It mystifies me that they're still buffing Russian heavies. German heavies would be fine right now if they'd include some larger maps and fix the sight range issues. That would let German tanks play to their strengths, long range shooting. Russian heavies would have to work to get in close before the Germans could pick them off but if they'd did you'd have things work much like they do now. Instead the longest shot I think I've ever seen in this game is maybe 500m with the average being under 150m. At that range the Russian guns reduced accuracy doesn't matter, the tank still completely fills your gun sight. The sighting system is just wonky right now with sixty ton death machines just appearing magically out of thin air in front of you. All of that factors in to make knife fighting the most common type of combat and its one the Russians excel at and the Germans are ill prepared to deal with. End result, Russian tanks feel dominant.
It's just a complete waste to be honest. I've got guns like the Long 75mm or 88mm but you never see the ranges that let those guns really show how dominant they could be. As a guy who far prefers the German line its frustrating to see biggest strength the Germans had completely marginalized.
I had one of what was probably the most "realistic" battles I've ever been a part of last night. Malinovka with mostly Tier 7 to 9's. I was there in my VK3601. No one moved. Everyone got to their regular camping spots and pitched a tent. The few people stupid enough to poke their heads out got them blown off but we ended the full 15 minutes match with only five kills per team. It was boring, frustrating, and kind of hilarious all at the same time.
I did the math last night, a fully loaded Tiger will cost me about 240k XP. I could get a King Tiger but it would be stuck pretty much stock. I don't really see a problem with grinding out the King Tiger unlock, especially since I'll have a fully tricked out Tiger to do it in. I'll have enough XP left over to get a T-34/57 and a StuG III. I may see about pushing it up to a T-34/85 but it will probably be pretty stock if I do. I could care less if I spent another month in my StuG.
Oh, saw some more changes they are considering. First is making all the upper tier (7-10) ammo cost even more and repairs to high level tanks more expensive. That's a bit unwelcome. I can get that if you're going to be playing in the upper tiers they probably want you buying a premium subscription and I can't hold that against them, but at the same time I'd like to get to roll around in my King Tiger without it being a once a night treat because I saved up enough in my other tanks to afford it. Also, they're thinking about making the cash you receive after each match more dependent upon whether you win or not. That I don't like. I'm being stuck in random pick up groups. Even if I play perfectly their can still be a jackass or two on my team who think driving a PzIV straight across the middle of Malinovka is a good tactic that can completely negate my contribution. If I'm getting stuck in random PUGs then that will mean my cash flow is now random as well. Personally I like the way it is now, a reflection of your own individual contribution with some influence from the final result.

As a pretty much strictly german tanks driver, I completely agree on the range thing. I miss the days of playing WWIIOnline. The game had a ton of problems, but the one really good thing about it was your view range extended for literally miles. I remember sitting in an 88 deployed a couple miles outside of a town, picking off vehicle convoys that were trying to capture it. Here your limited to a mx viewable range of 500 meters. You can still hit stuff outside of that range, but it'd have to be a lucky blind shot.
I would just go with a maxxed out Tiger and put the rest into a secondary vehicle. It didn't take too long to grind out the KT for me, and the Tiger I is pretty fun once you have it tricked out. I think after the wipe, I'm going to cave in and go Russian. I should be able to get an IS-4 or maybe an IS-7, and one other decent vehicle to be my cash cow. I don't mind playing a secondary vehicle for most matches to earn cash to play my heavy as I typically have been doing that anyway as I've been trying to work up to a panther on my medium tree. KT sits in the garage most of the time now. I still enjoy it, but I need most of my earned XP on my VK3002.
I think the changes they are making to costs/income is reflective of a push to focus on clan battles. If you haven't seen their plans for that, take a look here: http://game.worldoftanks.com/news/general_news/clan_wars_details_revealed
I think what they should be doing is keeping the current cost/income figures they are using now for PuG battles, and use the intended changes only for clan battles where you have at least some control over what the rest of your team is doing.
