Watch out Necros, KV sucks a lot for a heavy. You'll either want to get to a KV3 as fast as possible or invest into KV2 weapons. Kinda miss the speed the T28 has. If you feel you need a bit more oomph george, you could. Always aim for the highest penetration guns and best suspensions if you know you'll be sticking with the tank for a while. Only bother with turret if you either need a certain gun or it has better armor/degree speed.

As you get higher tier tanks and get matched against higher tier tanks your playstyle has to change. In the early tanks you can run and gun, but as tanks get heavier, slower, and mount bigger guns, you need to move to more of a hide and seek playstyle. You can't really go toe to toe out in the open because you don't have the speed to avoid fire from third parties. If the artillery doesn't get you, the ISU-152 hiding in the brush behind you will. The only nice thing about the KV is it will teach you this one way or another.

Well, after reading this I picked it up last night and had a wee blast. Starter tanks are pretty dreadful, but once you get started it gets real fun.
I've just about fully upgraded my AT-1, running it with a big dirty 45mm gun. Was playing the level with the snow and the town in the centre, headed down the east flank, hiding in the bushes overlooking my teams base. One shotting loltraktors is awesome. Outshooting a tier 3 or 4 tank (not sure on the German tanks much) I think it was a PzKpW 3A. Also awesome. BT-2s trying to be clever and circling around me, let em take their shots until they pass in front of me (fools!) then taking out their tracks and taking my sweet time finishing em off
Worst moment... hiding in a bush, when all of a sudden, a Leopard appeared, rammed my rear armour, and ruptured my fuel tank and left me on fire. Yes, it was almost as dirty as it sounds.

Didn't see this till just now. Generally the premium ammo (the stuff you have to pay for with gold rather than credits) is not worth the investment. With a PzIIIA you want to up grade your engines and get some speed as that is your best bet to avoid getting killed. Aside from that, focus on killing the light stuff (SPGs, other light tanks, TDs if you can get to the rear or sides of them). The medium and heavy stuff you want to leave alone unless someone else has thier attention and you can get around for side or rear shots.

Ah yes, leopards are nasty. Even with my t34 I hate them. Their guns may not always hurt me but their strength is their artillery spotting abilities. If a +5 Tier SPG is out there, I bet its following where the cats are running to.

I've been playing more carefully and actually did well last night. Died a lot as usual but not as bad. I think it's just the 1 shot kills right off the bat that get to me, just makes ya feel like you just wasted your time.
I was saving up for the KV, but I decided to get the final big gun for the T28 and even though it reloads way too slow, it packs a good enough punch so I've been doing better since I added that. I already earned back the xp spent so I should have the KV in a few days.
I dunno if I like the camper battles too much, it just gets boring to me. Like last night, it came down to me and another guy on arties, and 2 heavy tanks. and they just sat there and hid behind a hill where we couldn't hit them and wouldn't come out to even try to cap our base or anything. I just got sick of sitting there and rushed em, actually managed to take one out with a point blank hit but the other one got me.
I also don't get the XP system. Sometimes it seems like I'm getting lots of action, shooting up people and the game ends and I got like 100 xp. Next game I feel like I was useless, but I get 300.

Having fun with artillery.
Getting decent enough games in, too.
I like that I can just play for 20min and get 2 games in.
Thanks for the heads-up.

Started playing this morning and I had fun even if I was in a Lichtank. The controls were nicely intuitive, didn't have any trouble adapting to them and getting playing right away. The maps were interesting though when I found myself on a large open one I felt like a target more than anything.
Didn't do too badly for someone just starting and in a crappy tank I think. Kept moving forward as best I could, got 4 hits but didn't make any kills.
Upgraded the turret to try and get up to the next tier of tanks, also the engine because frankly this thing is a total POS. I was slowed to a crawl by a gentle hill. I'm pondering just turning the starting 150 gold into cash and use it to buy the next level up tank just to be out of this thing.

I've swapped the PzIIIA for a Luchs. I like the 2cm better than the 5cm one and I actually seem to do more damage.
I've got all my crew at 75% training and I'm upgrading the engine as fast as I can (just need the cash to upgrade to maximum engine). What's the best solution for dealing with sudden close range encounters with larger enemies in the open? My tank still seems too slow, I just hold down 'W' to accelerate, is there a way to go faster? According to the stats my tank will do 60kmph, I never seem to go over 40kmph even on roads.
Also I've taken to shoot and scoot tactics against larger enemies. Is annoyance fire (not causing damage) worth it? Are players generally spooked by any fire?
Should we form some sort of Dakka league? BTW: I'm George_Spiggott in the game.

Luchs is a nice little tank for the tier and is a preview of the Leo (my favorite tank). You'll have the speed when you get the full engine and suspention upgrades. Against bigger tanks you mainly want to get past them to get to the soft chewy SPGs. Again never approach them head on or give them a no lead shot at the back of your tank as you are moving away from them. Usually you want to get past them as quickly as possible and put some terrain features between you to block thier LOS as you make your escape.
If you are going to try and engage one, approach it like you are driving past it then turn into him to get to the rear of the tank. Circle him and try to stay ahead of his turrent, but don't get so far ahead that he can simply reverse direction to get a shot on you. Don't fire until you can get shots on his sides or rear as stuff into the front will generally bounce unless you know exactly where to aim and can line up the shot...or get lucky.
The rapid fire cannons will tend to do more damage on thin skinned stuff when you factor in total damage of each shell that hits, but once you start dealing with most medium or higher tanks, the small cannon shells just tickle their paint.
Annoyance fire just depends on the tank. Most stuff it's pointless against unless you are trying to get their attention (which is generally a bad idea unless you are trying to sow confusion to allow the rest of your team to move up). You may get lucky and track them, keeping them from chasing you or being able to manuver into a postion to get a better shot at you. At this level it's not too bad, but at higher tiers with bigger guns taking 7-10 seconds to reload, having limited ammo loads, and shells costing in the realm of 1000 credits a shot, you want to make sure that you are going to hit and hurt what you shoot at (of course with those guns, most things you hit with them are going to be hurt ).
I know I'm spooked by it but I'm in a lichtank, a heavy machine gun would put holes in me.
Heh, everything puts holes in loltraktors...but you move out of them pretty quick.

Actually I still use my noobtank sometimes, it's fun and you don't have to pay for repairs or ammo. I will usually just use it if my other tanks are blown up and stuck in games.
Your tank will move much better if you upgrade the tracks and engine. I would say tracks first because they seem to help you move and accelerate better, and the engine is more for top speed I think.
I just got my first heavy tank last night, the KV. It's sooo slow. gonna take a real long time to get it upgraded.
also, if you don't want to hold W down the whole time, just press R a few times, that's your auto drive, and F is auto reverse. Also if you highlight an enemy and right click, your turret will lock onto them which is nice for doing drivebys

Thanks, good tips. I inadvertently locked onto a target when I was goofing with the controls at first. Now I know how to do it on purpose.
Rather than sink the cash and experience into it though I think I'm going to be turning the gold to cash (it's not even remotely enough to buy anything really worthwhile) and get out of the n00btractor.

One thing about gold that I read on the game forums is, don't do anything with it. Save it and in 2 weeks or so you will have enough to buy a 1 month premium account and then you will earn 50% more xp and cash which comes in really super handy later on since it will take so much upgrade the higher level tanks.

Good call. I did use some already just to goof around, but this sounds good too.
I need a second SPG to use while waiting for the first to be usable again.

I have 4 tanks including the noob one. I'm sticking with russia for now and I have the 2nd spg, 3td tank destroyer and now my KV heavy tank. When one blows up I just switch to a different tank and go play. You can rack up cash a lot faster that way.
Tank destroyers can be fun too but they're camper tanks. Park yourself in bushes so you're harder to detect and watch the areas where the little scouty tanks like to come in from then blast em as soon as they appear
I like the TDs a lot cuz they look like basilisks

Radios determine the range at which your teamates can see you, and more importantly, the enemy targets you can see. If you are out of radio range, all your spotting is for nothing as your targets won't appear on your teamate's maps and your artillery is left blind.

Upgraded to a Pz III last night. Working to get the suspension upgrade so I can upgrade the turret then upgrade to the 50mm canon. This 37mm is pointless. I'm up against Pz IVs, KVs, and everything except light tanks and arty can just ignore this pop gun. I think tonight I'm going to take up guarding our artillery from marauding light tanks. Right now I'm just getting my ass handed to me trying to side and back shot everything else.

yes please protect arty I hate playing arty when everyone just runs off. May as well just exit right then and there and play another tank.
I've played in a few games though where the whole team just sits and waits, then blows away all the scouts as soon as they show up, then you just mop up the rest quick & easy.
I wish I could make a macro button that every game it says to the whole team "Please wait for a bit and protect the arties" so I don't have to type it all the time

There must be something available after the 5cm cannon, probably the long 5cm cannon. Historically and game wise the (short) 5cm cannon is turd. I swapped back to the 2cm. The 2cm still has no penetration but at least the ROF is high.
The Leopard looks to have a Puma Turret does it also have the Puma's long 5cm gun?
The Puma should be in the game.

If I remember the tech tree for my tank the 5cm is the only upgrade it gets. I have to step up to the next tank at that point. I'll have to check which version of the 5cm it is because if it's not the long I'll save the XP and just get out of this tank. The 37mm can shoot holes in most lights as is.
