Cheers, guys!

Let me just make sure this thread doesn't veer completely off course -- plus I actually have something painted to share with you, at long last

I have finally managed to finish my Be'lakor model, giving it a base inspired by a recipe Augustus b'Raass used on his Bloodthirsters: I built up a small mound for Be'lakor to stand on with Milliput, pressing some small stones into the putty when it was still soft. Then the whole thing was covered in a generous layer of Vallejo's Sandy Earth Paste (I cannot recommend that stuff enough, by the way!), and then I selectively added some patches of my usual basing mix of tiny pieces of slate, cork chaff and modeling sand. So here's what the base looked like before painting:

Of course the really important thing was to make sure again and again that the model would sit flush atop the base, so I checked and double-checked that by carefully putting Be'lakor on there in between all the different detailing steps:

As you can see, I decided to give Be'lakor a relatively big base, in spite of the model's relatively small size. I made this choice both for gaming reasons (at least in theory...) and because I thought a larger base would make for a better canvas for the excellent sculpt, giving it the space it needed.

So I quickly painted the base last weekend, and so I finally ended up with a finished model. Take a look:

I am pretty happy with the outcome: Not only does the model look really cool in red, if you ask me, but Be'lakor also definitely works as a Khornate Daemon Prince: He basically looks like a massive modern Bloodletter anyway:

So while I can now use him as Be'lakor, I feel tempted to give him a new name and backstory: In fact, I have this half-formed concept in the back of my head about a daemonic legion created both to support and haunt the World Eaters' 4th assault company: As I've said many times, Lorimar and his followers remain wary of the daemonic, as they fear giving in to the blessings of the pantheon too much will turn them into the same raving madmen as the rest of their legion. But what if Khorne keeps wanting to tempt - and punish - them and has created a daemonic legion for that exact purpose: One daemon born for every broken promise and forsaken oath, a constant reminder of the company's inevitable doom...? Wouldn't you agree that my new "Khornate Be'lakor" would be the perfect leader for such a Brazen Legion?

In any case, he fits in well enough with the small daemonic posse I already have...

As always, let me know what you think!

Oh man I love that fluff for the daemon forces

The idea of daemonic allies being sent both to support and to haunt a chaos force is the perfect way of describing what daemonic support would be like

I like it!

Oh, and Be'lakor really does work very nicely in red...

Loving your Death Guard stuff, can't wait to see them painted!

I also got bit by the Death Guard craze, and am planning on getting my own army started up alongside by Word Bearers.

Just a quick question: where did you get the bits for the backpack on the paint test model?

Cheers, guys!

@ Dr. Temujin: Most of the backpack actually consists of a tank from the Ork flamer guys (Burnaboyz, I believe? Not sure on the actual English name). The tank was then combined with some parts from a plastic Mk. 3 backpack and an old 2nd edition CSM backpack (one of the designs still available in the Khorne berzerkers kit), in order to actually make it look like a modified Astartes backpack. Hope this helps!

*blows dust off this thread*

Hey everyone, first of all: A belated happy new year to all of you! Phew, it's been quite a while since I last posted here, hasn't it?

Anyway, I apologise for the protracted absence. Real life has been pretty hectic - and occasionally unpleasant - lately, and while I had high hopes about being able to accomplish lots of hobby related stuff during the holiday, I ended up spending most of the time sleeping, eating and obsessively hunting robot dinosaurs.

I do at least have some stuff to share with you, though, so bear with me here

First of all, in case anyone's interested, the first part of my 2017 recap is up over on my blog! In fact. The post, in which I take a detailed look back at my hobby year and at all the models I managed to paint in 2017, can be found here.

Speaking of which, I only really finished twelve models last year. Hardly an army, eh?

That being said, I am still pretty happy with my output, especially since I still really like each of those models, so it's been quality over quantity last year, eh? At least, that's what I keep telling myself...

So, what else is new? I did make some time for kitbashing at least. The first thing I did after purchasing the new Necromunda boxed set was to use bitz from the sprues on some of my older World Eaters. Something has to be wrong with me...

The flamer guy now uses a Goliath rebreather head, which I think works like a charm (in fact, those Goliath heads are pretty much ideal for World Eaters -- especially the one literally chomping at the bit!), and the sergeant now features a Goliath armour plate as a super-ornate belt buckle.

And then there was a project that just happened to come together after refusing to do so for ages: Remember Maxime Pastourel's excellent Lord of Contagion model from the Dark Imperium boxed set? I truly love that model! I treated myself to two of those, via bitz swap: One to leave completely unaltered, the other one I wanted to convert. My initial idea was that making the model into a representation of Typhus would be a nifty idea.

But then the massive Death Guard release dropped and gave us not only a new model for Typhus, but two different sets of DG terminators -- which pretty much seemed to defeat the exercise of converting the Lord of Contagion. Moreover, the conversion just didn't come together, with the model seemingly fighting me every step of the day. So back into the box it went.

But I came across those bitz recently, and gave it another go. And I think I may finally be on to something. Take a look:

Now this guy still needs a bit of work: The upper left leg is just a piece of sprue right now, connecting the lower leg and the torso, so there'll be some GS sculpting going on there. I'll also have to do some cleanup where I shaved off some of the more ostentatious spikes and horns. But by and large, I am pretty happy with the model so far.

And last but not least, I have also managed to finally put some paint on a model again, during a pretty chunky painting session yesterday, courtesy of my friend Annie who invited me over. Here's what things looked like after a while:

And this is the model shortly before I packed up for the night:

There's still quite a bit of detail work left to be done, but as you can see, the Contemptor is definitely getting there!

As always, let me know what you think!

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

@ Iliu: Cheers, mate!

@ Anvildude: Mate, that's a really cool idea! I couldn't leave the entire "leg bone" bare, but I did leave some of it showing through when greenstuffing in the actual upper leg, thanks to your suggestion. It's a rather subtle effect, but it does make the Lord that slight bit ickier Pictures soon!

@ WarbossDakka: Na, Daemon Angron was a 2016 project -- I just managed to complete the two additional mortal Angrons last year

@ corpuschain: Cheers, man! Do you mean the converted Dark Vengenace Helbrute or the recent plastic Contemptor? In any case, both models actually provide perfect conversion and reposing fodder, with a bit of thought.

@ Nevelon: Haha, I know, right? As I've said before, though: I try to play right by those fallen Ultramarines, though, if nothing else: I actually spend an almost ridiculous amount of work on getting those dead (or dying) guys on the bases just so...

@ lindsay40k: Thanks a lot! It's actually more of a harpoon, though (there's an entire chain winch system added to the arm), in keeping with the World Eaters' tactics of using "Ursus Claw" harpoons on their bigger warmachines.

So I finished the cleanup work on my Lord of Contagion conversion yesterday:

Just detail work, really, but I ended up being way more meticulous about it than I had planned. This included a pretty finicky few minites of cleaning up the model's hood and a small but important tweak to the scythe. Oh, and I also greenstuffed in a left leg. Following Anvildude's awesome suggestion, I left some of the sprue "bone" peaking through the folds of flesh for that extra bit of ickiness. I also worked in some cabling, although most of this will end up being covered up by the rest of the model, unfortunately:

Your ability to see the potential in a model conversion coupled with the skills to both build and paint it to an incredibly high standard has always impressed me. I went a few pages back to catch up a bit. 2017 looks like it was a year spent focusing on those skills, to push your creative and artistic skills. Kharn is my favorite model of the bunch but it was a close with Be'lakor.

Looking forward to seeing Typhus progress from plastic to painted.

@ Skalk Bloodaxe: Aw, mate, that is high praise indeed! Thanks a lot for that!

So it seems I have a reputation to live up to, eh? Good thing I put in some work on that second Contemptor of mine: Here he is, suitably battered and covered in grime and blood now:

The paintjob is all but finished at this point, but I am already hard at work on the base:

To be honest, I have wanted to use the "fallen Space Marine reaching for a melta charge" effect for a LONG time now, and this model finally presented me with the perfect opportunity!

There is something so 40k about the high tech death ray with a bayonet isn't there?

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Cheers, guys!

@ Zergsmasher: Thanks, man! That is really nice of you to say!

@ Chaos Emperor: Thanks! I've had that Ursus Claw arm for ages, since it was originally built for a 40k Dread. It arguably works much better on this model, though.

@ Nevelon: Haha, your suspicions may be correct -- you know what, though? I actually like the idea that it could really go either way, because it adds yet another layer to the mini-narrative created by the base: The Ultramarine is givig it one last shot, as Ultramarines are wont to do, because "only in death does duty end", while the Contemptor has bigger fish to fry and is already looking for bigger prey -- he's kitted out for tank hunting, after all. Could this prove his undoing? Maybe, but then it rather fits his character. Plus I think there's still a pretty fair chance that his next step will squish the Marine's head like a ripe melon...

@ Ynneadwraith: It is, isn't it? Let me clarify though that the idea certainly wasn't mine! It's something I have seen on half a dozen Heresy armies already, especially on Mr. Poom's excellent World Eaters, so I cannot claim any responsibility. I've wanted to use this idea for ages, though!

@ Llamahead: Haha, true enough. I really dislike the design of the 30k melta, though, so I had to add a spiky bit for a changed silhouette and that certain World Eaters je ne sais quoi

Did anyone notice the freehanded motto on the scollwork covering his breastplate, by the way?

Spent the afternoon getting the base painted, by the way, so expect an update tomorrow, when the light's good enough to take some new pictures.

Okay guys, like I promised, here's the next update: After adding somme extra rubble to the base and stipling some Liquid GS texture on those woefully smooth plastic basing parts, everything was ready for painting:

So that's what I did yesterday. And here, without further ado, is the finished Contemptor:

And here's a closer look at the base:

The last picture also shows off the piece of rubble pinning the Ultramarine down a bit better.

Now back when I visited Augustus b'Raass in Amsterdam last summer, he was awesome enough to magnetise my first Contemptor's gun arm. And while I am totally ignorant when it comes to magnetising stuff, it was easy enough to add something readily magnetic to the second Contemptor's right shoulder. So now I get to do fun stuff like swapping in a new gun...

...or changing the angle of the gun:

And, just to reiterate, there's also that freehand

So yeah, that's the finished model! And here are "the twins":
