Wales plans to cut down the £50 in wasted food a month a Welsh family goes through along with other wastes by about 70 percent by 2025. For Americans, the conversion of £50 is equivalent to an Ork Deff Dread and a Warlord Ghazghkull Thraka in terms of approximate value, or in another form of currency, a Space Marine Battleforce. How would you use £50 a month so that you would reduce waste? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/wales/10357819.stm Householders are to be encouraged to throw away less waste food in a bid to save both money and the environment. The assembly government says a typical Welsh family wastes around £50 a month buying food that ends up in the bin. It is part of a new waste strategy to end a "throwaway society" and help reach a new target to recycle 70% of waste in Wales by 2025. The environment minister is due to give details about the proposals, such as rewarding those who recycle. Jane Davidson will also set out exactly what householders, businesses and local authorities will need to do for Wales to become a "zero waste nation" by 2050. She said she hoped to highlight the fact that waste does not only damage the environment, it can also be bad for people's finances. "We must change our attitude towards waste because we cannot continue as a "throwaway" society sending our rubbish to landfill," she said. "Reducing the amount of waste we produce is at the heart of this new strategy. My vision is to see all of us spending less of our hard earned money on unwanted food and goods and as a result producing less waste. 'Make changes' "Reducing the amount of waste we produce will then result in having to spend less money on waste management." Around 90% of everything people buy has become waste within six months, according to the assembly government. It said that by managing waste "sustainably" and making sure that people recycle at least 70% of their waste by 2025, Wales' ecological footprint - the size of our impact on the planet - will be reduced by 27%. It said Wales is currently the only country in the UK where every local council offers a separate food or food/green waste collection. It wants to extend this to every home in Wales and has committed £34m between 2009 and 2011 to help achieve this. First Minister Carwyn Jones said: "We must all make changes. Adopting a more sustainable approach to how we deal with our waste will bring new investment and sustainable jobs to Wales." The assembly government says Wales is the only country in the UK to introduce legislation on statutory recycling and composting targets for local authorities. Earlier this month, Ms Davidson announced that a 7p charge for a plastic carrier bag is to be introduced in stores in Wales, probably from spring 2011.

Composting cut my household garbage bills down to bellow a half when I started. Also, it no smell if you put it in a proper container and get rid of it regularly.
I tend to take the compost out once a week (small package of gross) and the other trash (which has nothing that rots, and is soooo much lighter) once every 6 weeks or so.
Compost drop-off is free in my area, garbage pick-up and drop off is not.

Between dog and teenagers, there's nothing to recycle. If not regularly fed they start eating the walls-and you should see what the dogs do

We recycle food in Ealing.
The compostable stuff goes on the compost heap.
The non-compostable stuff like bones, meat, citrus fruit and so on, goes into a sealed locked bucket. It's doesn't smell because it is sealed. Vermin can't get into. If you haven't got a compost heap you can just put it all in the bucket.
The buckets are collected every week. The waste is put into a bio-digester which produces methane for a power plant and compost for the borough's parks.
In Japan there isn't nearly so much domestic food waste because Japanese housewives are really good at buying and using food. What there is (egg shells, inedible peels, etc) goes into the "moeru gomi" (burnable rubbish). It is collected 2-3 times per week and combusted in a power plant. In Tokyo anyway.
Back on topic, I am anxious to know if Wales's eco footprint can be compared to the size of Wales.

The past participle for "avoir" (to have) is "eu". That's all you need to know.
On topic, the compost-y thingie my government gave me is useless for any family larger than 4 people, and it's the families larger than four people that might actually make a difference by cutting down on rubbish.

Perhaps that shows Canadians buy and throw away a lot more food than they should. I know I throw away quite a lot of food.
One of the effects of separating and recycling rubbish is to show you what you have the most of. In my house the plastics bin is the largest, partly because plastic is usually bulky and light, but also because so much plastic is used in packaging even of food.

Plastics unfortunately don't get collected by our council so I have to put them in the general refuse for the landfill :(
When I was able to take it to the dumpit site, it didn't make ant difference as the coucil doesn't have the facilities to recycle anything other than the clear plastics anyway.

What else does the government do to help people recycle and help reduce their carbon bootprint?

He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags. |

Not at all unreasonable except for the line about being a " zero waste society by 2050". That is just ridiculous. With surprisingly little effort you can reduce your waste by quite a bit, and with much greater effort and expense you could probably all but eliminate "garbage" type waste, but you'll never have "zero waste". Even hunter gatherer cultures with very little material culture produce waste. Even if you just produce heat waste it is still waste. Apparently the principles of thermodynamics are merely an annoyance according to these politicians.

Untrue and unnecessary. The US had some of the first national parks in the world and created one of the largest remediation efforts in the world via EPA superfund. Just because you can improve doesn't mean you suck.
