Well, fellow Dakka's, being a 'mature' gamer, I'm also interested in budgets, more importently, the UK Governments latest emergency budget...............

VAT increasing from 17.5% to 20%.
Increase in Company NI Contributions.

Seeing as when VAT was lowered last year, its fair to say when the VAT increase comes into effect on Jan 1st 2011, prices will increase by 2.5%. In addition, the companies overheads are going to increase due to the increase in NI contributions. In addition to the above rises that will be forced upon GW, there is also GW's product price rises that traditionally have been well above the rate of inflation.

Even though International Sales do not attract the VAT rise, GW and Forgeworld still pass these prices onto their international prices.

I thinks 2011 is going to be a year of pain for our hobby. Thoughts anyone?

A bit of everything really....... Titanicus, Bolt Action, Cruel Seas, Black Seas, Blood Red Skies, Kingdom Death, Relic Knights, DUST Tactics, Zombicide the lit goes on.............

This is GW. We get this every year.

Mm hadn't realised they were putting it up to 20%.

Maybe this is the year of reckoning for GW ? They proices go up to so far that people finally cant afford to get stuff form them or any other retailers because they are being taxed to hell and back and everything is so expensive like a loaf of bread costs the same as a space marine captain... which would you pick ?

As for the hobby as long as people sell things second hand the hobby will live on. Just means you might have to get used to scrubbing off that paint from Ebay purchases.

I'm already doing that anyway. I gave up buying new products when they announced the June price rise.

It's only the GW Hobby that will suffer. Lots of other manufacturers already produce substantially cheaper figures etc.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Awesome news.

The VAT will eventually drive the majority of companies that produce goods out of the country. Once the country has no goods / exports to offer, the currency value will plummet and put the local economy into a tail spin straight into poverty.

It's happening in America too. Now more than ever with current administration.

I would like to see GW try to survive by increasing prices even more than last year (seriously, biggest price hike I've seen) in an economy where people simply can't spend anything.

Oh, we know that that's exactly what they'll do, but with the way everything's going, it might not work for them this time.

Maybe they'll drop prices in hopes of attracting buyers! They'll definitely do that! (sarcasm)

NO! that should definitely NOT be a rule!!!! Thats just gross! I don't want some slaanesh warrior charging me, Screaming a BloodLust filled roar, with his Jolly Roger Flopping around!!!! Thats just gross! I mean.....if it was a female warrior and she wasn't that bad looking, I think I could capture a few prisoners. My 'Interrogation' skill will be most useful then - Commissar NIkev

Perhaps you could explain the terms VAT and NI to those of us with little or no knowledge of government and financial terms/practices. I, too, am interested in what you are saying, unfortunately, I am just a layman.

VAT= Value Added Tax roughly equivalent to the sales tax you have at State level in the US.

NI= National Insurance, like the Social Security is a contributory system of insurance against illness, unemployment and for retirement that the former Prime Minister was apparently very keen to raid to pay for other stuff.

Ah, yes, that's exactly like ours. Our government routinely raids social security as well. They still want you to have the illusion that you are "paying in for your retirement" vs. "paying for other peopls retirement now, and pray the system is still around when you need it".

I love SS so much, that as a self employed store owner, I get to pay twice as much!

But on topic..I think this has little to do with how GW raises prices, and we just get another thread where people moan and groan. Right on schedule.)

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

I think this will give them "reason" for another price increase. The hobby is pretty much dead in my area now exept for a select few. Granted this doesn't make sense due to the fact that several have fully established armies, guess they're just quitters. After the inevitable increase more people will moan and groan about it as GW circles the drain. Oh well, I can always hit Dakka and ebay for my minis and start up new hobbies.

The greater good needs some moo.

Why would this make 2011 the 'year' of the price increase? GW increases prices all the time, and they never need an excuse. They give out excuses, usually hollow excuses that don't stand up to any sort of logical examination, but they certainly don't need to.

I mean "It's Tuesday - raise prices!" is really about as a good as any other GW excuse.

I'm sure GW, like a lot of other retail businesses, will use the VAT rises as a stick to beat the consumer with; they will use it as a convenient excuse to raise prices beyond the mandated 2.5%

But as KK mentioned, like him, I have also stopped buying GW products. The last price rise was the staraw that broke the camel's back for me. I don't think I am alone in this sentiment either. Hopefully, sooner rather than later, GW will realise they are only harming their long term viability with their anti-marketing and disdain for their long term fans.

Mostly because there's been a pattern of June price rises for a few years. Now we'll have one in January, and then another one in June, meaning a double whammy of price rise goodness.

Lest not forget that polymer supply is being restricted by chemical companies and other manufacturers/suppliers to artificially inflate prices.

On a lighter note lets not get too carried away regarding the VAT increase I mean, everything else will be going up by 2.5%.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Check my siggie.

I am on target to by nothing from GW all year, the sig isbnt updated I made threre large orders of Confronation to add to on, approx $500 all told. With even more to come.

GW's loss is Rackham's gain. I will play GW but not pay GW, its not worth it for a start. The amount of stuff I got for my money I would have had to pay £1000 to get the same amount of miniatures GW retail, and you have to build and paint them.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

On top of the well known price increases on their plastic kits I think some of the collectors stuff has gone up on their website. The Dogs of war minis seem to be more than I thought they were, a pack of 3 pikemen, for Alacanti Fellowship or Pirazzo's legion, is currently £10.50 but I'm sure it was only £9 a month back because I recall thinking it worked out at £3 a figure.

2011 - A year of GW Price Rises.
As was 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, ...
Standard seems 10-15% per year, the only solution the management sees to decreasing sales of 10-15% per year.

As long as vat's on fuel, everything is subject to vat.

You have to transport it to the supermarket

I've stopped buying GW stuff from GW. Having found it a lot cheaper elsewhere (by hook or crook), it really makes no sense to pay £5.00 to £10.00 extra in their stores or off mail order.

Can't see GW not adding the VAT rise, but it will certainly hurt their direct sales.
