I'm playing a campaign of apocalypse battles, but I need a background . It has IG, SM and Space Wolves on the one side, and BA, BT, Orks and Tau on the other. Have you got some ideas? Thanks anyway .

Join the Imperial Guard. The pay's lousy, the battles fierce and you probably won't ever come back again. BUT you get a lasgun.

Could be a small part of the Third War for Armageddon. That placement explains the reason for IG SM SW BA BT and Orks on the battlefield, and the Tau could simply be an explorator force.

Alternatively, the Marines and IG could be part of an exploration force beginning to attack a Tau world, when suddenly, an Ork Space Hulk arrives in the system.

SIdes should be:

SM
SW
BT
BA

4 chapters sent detachments to Imperial world to reclaim from xenos incursion and corruption.

IG Local planetary govenor, concerned with holding all he has and keeping it!. Willing to kick any one off his planet..unless they want to help him defend what he has, hrmmm?

TAU: Aware that the local population is under threat from the Imperium, they offer aid to the local govenor in the form of military assitance to fend off the marines... for the greater good..right?

Ork... "OI!.. be humies and em pansy blue boyz mixen et up!.. cmmon lads.. let us crump em all while dye ner be looking!"

If your trying to make it fluffy, It is best to avoid Space marines fighting Space marine's. AtraAngelis' suggestion seems the most logical way to do it, although it will be boring for the non-SM team fighting nothing but different flavours of marine. But hey...theres not alot we can do about half of all gamers only having SM's

The SM should be together, the IG turned renagede (but not Chaos) so mabye it started a rebellion. The Tau sees this as a chance to expand, merges the local system into there empire. Finally after the SM come to stop the Tau expanstion the Tau recriuct the Blood Axes clan as mercinares.

Unfourtunatly with cambiyaz idea is that Tau hate the Orks because they are not willing to learn or speak diplomaticly. I think the SM should be on one side with the Tau and IG on another and the Orks Just so happen to be attracted to the fighting.

I'm both chaotic and orderly. I value my own principles, and am willing to go to extreme lengths to enforce them, often trampling on the very same principles in the process. At best, I'm heroic and principled; at worst, I'm hypocritical and disorderly.

The SM IG etc could be invading a ork dominated area, with the BT and BA having found a deal with them to keep the peace, help out this brotherhood, along with some close by tau who are working with the BT and BA in come kind of treaty & help out. Just the core around an idea, could add fluff

Human Auxiliary to the Empire

Imperial guard is on a mission to neutralise all aliens withing and the ______ system, and prepare it for human collinisation, space marines and space wolves are called to over see the mission, and help where they can, the Tau and Orks have control over different parts of the system, the Tau strike a deal with the space marines where if they help the Tau, the Tau will give them some sacred artifacts and relics, the orks barge in and offer some new CC weapon, the space marines and wolves decline, but the BA and BT saw this as an opurtunity to gain some new equipment and items

Bit long but you can change it to your needs

Orks: 500pts

but that would make it BT, BA, SW, SM and tau vs IG and orks. 5 vs 2.
the best way is to have BT, BA, SW and SM against IG, tau, and orks. then it's 4 vs 3. fairer.

so onto the fluff:

After a small civil war due to lack of rations and poor living conditions, the IG have a mutiny against it's planetary governor, and the PDF are overpowered. the general behind the uprising promotes himself to the rank of the new planetary governor, and after hearing that the adeptus astartes of the black templars are coming to thwart his rebellion, enlists the help of the tau as mercenaries. The war reaches a stalemate, and the corrupt governor orders for more reinforcements to be commisioned- ork freebooters. Though the tau mistrust them, they are fiercely loyal to thier ally the governor, as he has promised them this world in his will. they are not treacherous enough to assassinate him, and so remain as guns-for-hire. The black templars realise that they will be overrun soon, and so plead for nearby astartes to help, as local PDF's have either been killed by the rebels or are deemed too untrustworthy to enlist. blood angles are nearby, and the wolves of fenris help as well. The space marines of the (insert chapter name here) chapter have piled in, due to the fact that the late governor was a close ally of the chapter for many decades, an ally forged over generations. The two opposing sides send scouts into unclaimed territory, and the small skirmish develops into full-scale war.
