Looking at the harpy pictured in the tyranid codex it appears to me that it is basically a big flying trygon with stranglethorn cannons.

I think taking a trygon model, flipping it so that it is horizontal with the table and sticking it on a flying stand with big wings and stranglethorn cannons on it would look really cool. I'd love to field a couple of these. The only problem is that they seem fragile on first glance, and they don't have synapse which means you need to dedicate some kind of synapse creature to roam about with it.

I'm thinking of maybe running two harpies with adrenal glands and keeping a flying tyrant with TL devourers and maybe a big screen of gargoyals moving in front. I think this formation might be able to do a lot of harm to enemy infantry.

Anyone else utilize harpies, and if so how do you use them? Also how do you model them?

I don't run them, but I've seen some good modelling for them. They're sort of like smaller Flying trygons on Valkyrie bases, and they've got wings

I don't have my codex on me right now, but I believe they're...150 points?

Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

Harpies seem best as flying gun platforms for the heavy venom cannon to get some additional high strength shooting into the codex. Melee harpies doesn't seem like a great option. Yes, a monstrous creature, but only 2 base attacks. Meh. I'd rather have the TL Heavy Venom Cannon.

Modeling, trygons with wings seems fair.

I realize they are not intended for CC but think adrenals are not a bad investment at 10 points and will me pop skimmers.

Also should I bother screening with gargoyals? I could skip the gargoyals and go with three harpies. Three harpies and three trygons would at least look impressive on the battlefield.

Yes, you really need to screen with Gargoyles. The damage Autocannons do to them can't be understated. Each Autocannon fired at them will score atleast a wound, so a battery of 4 Havocs will kill one per shooting phase. A swarm of Gargoyles would keep that Harpy alive through the fire.
