Apparently, Westboro Baptist Church is going to picket ComiCon. The only thing funnier is if, in true "Revenge of the Nerds" style, the nerds fought back by joining in the picket!

Careful that groups exists via obtaining funds from suing other parties. Someone's informed them nerds have money, and they want some.

These guys protested my High School several months back for being named after an allegedly gay poet and claiming that it was corrupting the children (arguable either direction in my case ).

The poet in question: Walt Whitman.

Because there's no real way for them to sue a KKK/NBP rally's membership for beating the snot out of them.

Well, plus both of those memberships(while having a large membership base of radical individuals) know better than to commit violence.

I would like to go on the record that, while I cannot stand these people, I find the amount of threats and/or suggestions of violence and/or crime that people make towards them equally alarming.

They are exercising what has been established as their legal right. Hate them for it, if you must. Deride them for it, if it amuses you. Please, however, do not intimate that it would be appropriate to harm them or their property for their views.

While they have a right to assemble and picket US, we have a right to dress up in our best 501st, steampunk, cosplay, shining knight, Klingon, Anime & WH40K costumes, mingle with them, and try to hand them OUR literature (D&D character sheets, players handbooks, army rosters, ComiCon programs & anything else you can think of). heck, wouldn't it be ironic to hand them print outs of Jack Chick comics?
Be nice to them RIGHT TO THEIR FACES. Heck, invite them in. Offer to buy them a "Galactic Burger" or something.
Your rights to assemble and speak freely do not mean that you cannot say things they will find annoying or inciteful (is taht a word, even? LOL).

If you want to get back at these people, do to them what theyre doing to us. Annoy them. Just be better at it. You know what thei buttons would be. Push them.

Plus, Comic Con is in "commiefornia" land of the freak and home of the liberal. The church probably filed for a permit months ago... of course a counter protest could be interesting... lots of Military and bikers in San Diego... and lots of them go to Commic Con.

Actually no. Do you know why they do it? Because of the fact that they get publicity for their law firm while doing it. These are people who do absolutely everything they can to provoke a fight/physical altercation and wrap themselves up in "Free Speech" to avoid being taken to anything outside of civil court.

Physical violence towards them is completely acceptable considering the fact that they picket military funerals to start fights and then clean out the bank accounts of any serviceman who even so much as looks at them funny.

Well, I guess I can't vouch for you guys, but every night I know I say a quick prayer to Constantine, Batman, and Captain America for always watching over me and protecting me from demons from hell, gun toting maniacs in white facepaint, and communism.

if comic-con is anything like gencon and other conventions i've been too, those attending should round up the fattest and smelliest of the bunch (the once-a-week-hygieners) to infiltrate the protesters. tell them it's a larp or something and that there is swag. that should teach the protesters a lesson!

@ Kanluwen: Do you have any evidence to back these claims up? Because if a fight IS started both sides could well be prosecute (and I doubt that would look good on them). Besides, at least they are protesting legally.

@ helgrenze: That is actually quite offensive to me as I live in California (odd how people can't spell anymore) and I don't deny them their right to do it so I'm glad they got a permit to do it in a legal way.

They never get prosecuted, simply because they refuse to press charges and just take people to civil court.

Look up the history of the Westboro Baptist Church. It's owned and operated by a couple who are practicing lawyers. They have their children always present at the protests, and anytime they get their permits revoked--they sue for "quashing free speech".
