Hi again, same apologies. The dread is a flyrant, the green cap dread is a fex and the 60mm base on flipped cup is a shy T-fex. I also didn't have the numbers to field 30 gaunts and 30 gargoyles so some termagants are standing in. The terminators are the zoans as well. Other than that it's wysiwyg

CC Flyrant - 265
leech and paraoxysm
toxic miasma
regen
wings

Prime - 105
lash whip and bone sword
s. talon
regen

2 x Zoanthropes - 170
spod with stinger salvo

2 x Venomthropes - 110

30 x Gargoyles - 240
sacks and glands , 2 units of 15

30 x Hormagaunts - 300
sacks and glands, 2 units of 15

5 x Warriors - 180
4 with talon and deathspitter
1 with barbed strangler

Carnifex - 185
frag spines
bio plasma

T Fex - 295
Rupture cannon
Des. larvae
regen

all told 1850 pts

My opponent was Ork with

Mad Dok Grotsnik
power klaw, hurty syringe

2 x 30 boys led by a nob with a power klaw

15 lootas

15 burnas

15 tank bustas

and a 3 strong cannon unit

...

all the boys had cybork bodies this proved to really thrash my assaults

The battle is a random Annihilation in a pitched deployment and was decided in 2.5 hours. He won deployment and had me go first.

My first thoughts were that this battle would be close and I would need to get into assault first to get my sack and gland bonuses. I mirror my 2 gaunts and gargoyles to hit both flanks and squeeze to the middle. On the west half I had the gaunts and gargoyles with Flyrant, Prime and T fex getting screened. The eastern half had the fex, another 15 strong gaunt unit, the warriors and venom getting screened. On the east border were the 15 strong gargoyles who I planned on going straight up for flanking action. The zoans were to be dropped in where the fighting was worst.

He put a 30 x ork mob on the west side, then 15x shootas, the 3 cannons, 15 x tank bustas, 15 x burnas, and finally a 30 x ork mob with the Mad Dok

Deployment notes

This is where it was already going downhill. I was overconfident in my last game and I wasn't as tactical as I should have been. I think I shouldn't have mirrored my forces but rather piled them onto one side. Once I saw how many boys with cybork bodies where hitting my thin lines I realized my 15 strong wasn't going to even tarpit them a turn. Basic numbers also out horded me 60 something vs 105. Sure I had MC's but he also had range to gun them down. I don't know how to have deployed better. Little scraps of cover but nothing to help assault a 30 boy mob.

1st turn

I moved everything up and dumbly put the Flyrant ahead of his own screen I had the T fex shoot and destroy 2 of the 3 cannons. The barbed warrior hit 3 and wounded 2 only to be cybork saved. This would be the start of a long trend.
I ended my turn with the east gargoyles running to get venomthrope cover.

He moves up the 2 mobs of boys and yup, the tank bustas open up on the flyrant and down it went. Then the shootas kill 5 gaunts and the eastern mob with Mad Dok run toward the gargoyles but short on assault.

Thoughts
groan* I was bringing gargoyles to specifically screen the Flyrant and what do I do? Put him out front and make him a target. I learned later that that in itself didn't break the game. It really hurt but the boys were what did me in.

Turn 2

The reserved zoans don't show, and so I move up. The T fex tries to wound a loota but he saves. The west gargoyles shoot at the lootas and it saves the one wound. The warriors deathspit the burnas for 4 wounds only to have 3 saved. The barbed strangler does kill another though...

The western gaunts assault the 30 boy mob for 11 wounds pending, 3 saved 8 on through. He hits back for 19 pending, I save 2 and 17 destroy me. He consolidates 5 inches toward the gargoyles.

The eastern gaunts hit the burnas and give 12 wounds pending, 4 saved and 8 go on to kill. He gives 4 to the gaunts and fails the assault for a sweeping advance. 3 inch consolidation back to get into venomthrope cover.

The gargoyles assault the Mad Dok mob and 13 of 18 wounds pending...only to have 10 saved due to cybork bodies and FNP. Curses!! He hits back 51 hits, 26 wounds pending and I save 5 for 21 to kill me. Mad Dok consolidates 4 inches toward the gaunts.

So on his half of turn 2 he moves the western boy mob to the gargoyles and Mad Dok closer to the eastern gaunts. He has them shoot into the gaunts for 4 wounds and I fail my cover saves. The tank bustas try 5 wounds on the venomthropes and manages to kill one. The shootas try to put holes in the western gargoyles killing 5. The western boys shoot and kill another 5. The last cannon tries to wound the fex but it saves.

Mad Dok tries to assault the gaunts and passes the dt test given by the venomthrope. I swing for 22 hits, 5 wounds and he saves 4 for 1 to get through
He swings 51 attacks to 32 hits, to 18 wounds. I save only 4 of them and he gets 6 inches to move toward the venom, warriors and fex. Thankfully he forgot to assault the west mob onto the remaining gargoyles for an easy consolidating movement.

east side before the assault on the gaunts

Turn 3

The zoans show up and land on target just east of the tank bustas. I tried to get the T fex through cover and rolled 2 1's and a 2 for movement. He won't be joining the Prime in assaulting the boys. The zoans warp blast the tank bustas for 3 wounds and the pod stinger salvos for 3 hit, 2 wounds pending and 1 saved/ 1 wound. The T fex kills one western mob boy. On the eastern front, the fex, and warriors shoot the Mad Dok mob. The fex only gives 1 wound that's saved by FNP, the warriors manage to wound 3 and the one barb wound is saved as well.

So they assault with the venomthrope. The warriors count down 20 hits, 8 pending wounds only for half to be saved. Venomthrope does nothing. The boys whiff but then the power klaws on Mad Dok slam 3 ID on the warriors (leaving 2) and the Nob PK kills the last venomthrope.

The prime assaults the boys to 'try' and lock them but I should have seen the result coming. I give 1 wound, he goes 3 wounds and 2 nob PK wounds. Dead, and consolidates 3 inches lining up on the gargoyles.

West side before his turn

East side before his turn

His side doesn't move and the tank bustas open up on the zoans giving 4 wounds but I save 3 of them. The shootas gun down 6 of the 8 gargoyles and the last cannon scatters off. Then the boys shoot up 6 for minus 4 gargoyles.

The locked assault with Mad Dok saw the warriors giving him 2 wounds, the boys giving none again, and the fex whiffing the Dok. The Dok swings back for 3 PK on the fex and the Nob gives 2 to ID the last warriors. Fex is fearless and takes 2 wounds. Dead.

This is how turn 4 looked

Thus we decided to end this atrocity of a game at 1-8.

Results

I lost 1-8... the breakdown was...

I killed his burnas with the gaunt assault turn 2.

He tank busted my flyrant turn 1, gaunts assault western mob and lost on turn 2, gargoyles lost their assault on Mad Dok turn 2, Mad Dok assaulted/killed gaunts on turn 2, the prime died to assaulting the boys on turn 3, the gargoyles were shoot to death on turn 3, the venomthrope died on my turn 3 assault, the fex and warriors died on his turn 3 assault.

So yeah...I got ripped apart. I deployed badly and let the flyrant out of cover to get gunned down on turn 1. I guess I could have tried to keep more units together but even then when I was wounding he saved by the cybork bodies and it was even worse with the mob Mad Dok was in. FNP should have been a clue to wreck up Mad Dok with all my first attacks.

Those lootas and tank bustas also did a number on me putting me off target priority (the T Fex wasn't keeping fire on the boy mob after I took out 2 of the 3 cannons).

6 of the kill points were assaults I lost on the boy mobs. Little units like the gaunts and gargoyles were wiped out in that turn's assault. In my mind he was saving most of the wounds I sent his way. It happens but I certainly didn't want him assaulting with 120 attacks with my sack and gland basically neutered.

I look on paper and see gargoyles make 11 wounds, he saves 3 for 8 dead orks. He hits back for 19, I save 2 for 17 dead gargoyles. Seems about right statistically. Even with the FNP mob it seems to follow the numbers; gargoyles assault for 13 wounds, 4 (or .3) were saved from cybork bodies, leaving 9 to have 6 saved by FNP. He did take 3 wounds. During the game it FELT like he was making all saves but as I look at what I wrote he DID lose some boys in the mobs, just not enough for me to win the assaults.

So where does that leave me? Pretty dissatisfied on my deployment and how I didn't maneuver to multi-assault his boys. I should have targeted the Mad Dok on that last assault to rid FNP. It would have still been hard to remove all those boys but as I said, during the game I felt like he was making a large number of saves. On paper looking back it was about right. So kudos to him he played a good list.

I on the other hand need to try again. The 1250 list I made worked that one time, now I need to step it up. I think I'll take the advice SumYungGui and AlannahGrimm gave and throw out the T Fex for a Trygon Prime with regen. Then throw out 10 gargoyles for a wall of 20 for the flyrant. That will give me the points to buy 2 hive guard and change the flyrant's miasma to Old Adversary. I'll see how that works and if they still do nothing (read as : get so many wounds 10-20 gargoyles don't mean much) I may swap them out for raveners to help the trygon. There might be something to that, and once again, changes this list.

I was the Ork player on this battle and I have to agree that it seemed like the dice were coming up very heavily in my favor, but seeing mrwhoop break down the results I guess the saves from cybork bodies and FNP were performing as the statistics say they should.

It was a good battle and even though my boyz were able to do quite well for themselves I was still sweating on some of those assaults.

I'm just talkin' about Megaweapon.
