How do these work. If it's just 1 vs 1 vs 1, then I imagine it like a huge free for all. But what of when it's 2 vs 1. Do the 2 players count as 1 team who take their complete turn as a unit and then the 1 person goes, or what?

Played one last night where it was me (ork) with another player (eldar) against Blood Angels. We worked it such that me and the Eldar player had 1500 a piece and the BA player had 2500.

The reason for the point difference was b/c last time we tried this scenario, it was an IG and a SM against me (ork) with the point cost being them having 1500 a piece (3000 total) against my 3000 and it was no contest in my favor. We figured we might need to ratchet down the point cost for the 1 player for some reason that escapes me at the moment, but it definitely didn't hurt the Blood Angel player last night. He pulled it off by the skin of his teeth with our 1 control point we had being contested while a differentiated Sanguinary Guard with the Sanguinor held another point.

The rules don't cover team games, so it is really just something you have to talk about before hand.

i've played dozens of 2vs2 or 2vs1 and i've found it's a good idea to have the same number of points and force org charts. the side with two players will probably take less time to complete their turn but there won't be any imbalance if you do this.

If you're playing it as an Apocalypse game, you play as 2 teams.

If you're playing it as a three-way game, there is a scenario on page 272 of the full-size rulebook.

Otherwise, it's completely up to whoever is organising the game.

I have played something like..25 games among friends, and like...5 of those have been 1v1s. we have never had a 2v1, but hell, we have had 1v1x5 and thats just gay and insane

There are rules for firing into melee against 2 enemies fighting a combat (on a 1,2 or 3, it hits the other squad, on a 4, 5, or 6, it hits the intended targetted squad.)

Pretty much we always make points fair, but i see a lot of teaming and ganging up, especially coz Im a bit of a ruthless player. Not yesterday, my blood angel friend skipped his entire turn because he didnt want to attack the 3rd player or myself, for fear of offending / eating the full force of their army. So it was my turn, and instead of being gay and doing that I...uh..unloaded on the only blood angels melta squad so he couldnt kill my tanks anymore (small points game) and then manticored a huge bunch of tyranids. The players were slightly crippled, but the game never finished.... ( i never lost a single guardsmen during that game, i really had all the cards, i hate unfair games.)

I prefer 1v1 , but my friends dont because I usually have the money to buy a good army, And dakka to help me with that

2v2 is fine, play it as if each team is one team, share points between the teams ( as in 750 per person so its 1500 versus 1500) And say i need a chimera and my team mate has 55 points left with nothing to buy, hed let me have it, for the good of the team.

free for alls always end in tears, 1v1s excuse you from favourtism / ganging up.

The problem I find with 1v1v1 is deployment and the way in which you take turns. the rules given in the big rule book are fine for shooting into combat though. I find the weird way of sorting turns out to be VERY harsh on 1 player all the time (going first means you go last next turn, so you have to survive 2 turns of attack from two opponents before you can do anything again). Another big issue comes from deployment, you always end up with 1 person in the middle of the other two, and they 9 times out of 10 get fethed over.

We have a setup for a 1v1v1 game that helps a bit with some of the issues of two guys ganging up on the one. Basicly each player has one objective they own. Then each player randomly gets assigned an opposing player's objective to try and take. In essence:

Player A - Objectives A and B are worth 1 point, Objective C is worth none.
Player B - Objectives B and C are worth 1 point, Objective A is worth none.
Player C - Objectives C and A are worth 1 point, Objective B is worth none.

So essentially a player is always on the offense against one player and on the defense against the other. Teaming up against one person is pointless and will actually work against you (unless you and the other guy are being jerks and are just making sure the third guy doesn't win). Makes for some interesting list building and balancing of offensive vs defensive units.
