Hey Everyone,
I'm Danny, 20 and I'm a student.

I'm starting with the ultramarines, and I've got hold of the space marines from the Black Reach set, a razorback, the Battleforce set and a tactical squad I painted to see if I liked this.

I'm interested to see where I should go from here, and if anyone has any suggestions, especially in terms of criticism of my paint jobs.

Have fun with the "ultrasmurfs", or as you know them, Ultramarines.

I had a feeling that the popular good guys would get a childish name

What do you collect?

Don't listen to the nay-sayers, ultramarines are just given a bad name by all the 8-10 year olds that play them. I'd suggest you make yourself an army list and post it here for advice, it seems like your set for tactical squads from what I see you've bought but the C:SM is wonderfully diverse, if you haven't already, take a look at what there is.

It all really depends on what you like the look of, I find that’s a good way to go as you'll have fun, and that’s the most important thing in the hobby. Even if t isn't the best thing for the gaming side (looking at you vanguard veterans...)

So far I have:

captain

5 scouts
2 tactical squad (flamer and rocket launcher in both)
2 combat squads
terminator squad
assault squad

rhino
dreadnaught
razorback

I've ebayed a new edition codex and I'm awaiting it's arrival.
Having only just painted 1 tac squad, I've got a long way to go before I extend my wish list, but I was wondering what I might need in the future.

OH-I Wanna get out of here

As said above, it really depends on what you want to do. There are seveal competative lists with SMs, and even more fun and cool lists that arent so much! Also depends on if you are playing a small group and know what you will be up against or if its an all comers list. A really great way to get some direction is to start a PM Blog on dakka and get input on both the direction of your builds and the painting/modeling process. Also a great way to keep you motivated.

Do you make use of any inks when you paint?

I use Asurmen Blue and Devlan Mud washes for the armour and brown areas. I've been given a proper paint lesson by GW, but I know I can improve.

More smurfs! Awesome and welcome to Dakka.
I've found I like the Ultra's paint scheme more and more. I look forward to seeing your work in the P&M section. I've often heard the suggestion of one Rhino per squad but its really up to you! I would suggest a Land Raider and some Assault Terminators but its up to you and your play style. Welcome again to the forum!

Welcome to Dakka never get angry at marine haters.. it doesnt help.
Oh and a painting tip: Always thin your paint with water, this water should contain a small amount of soap (no foam) to break the surface tension.

Cheers
