So, from what I've been seeing from all the Warmachine players at my regular venue, they clearly do not want new players in the crowd.
After barely 3 games, I've already been told to:
- Quit the game.
- Give up my models.
- Forget I even thought about starting this game.
- Leave the store.
- Never come back.
Now here's some fun to be had by all; the person telling me this happens to work at this store. I know the store owner better than he does. As an added bonus, one of these guys is a Pressganger (a PP representative) who is doing the exact opposite of what he is supposed to do.
So what should I go about doing? This venue is the only good one in my area; I still go there to play 40k. But something tells me that I still want to play Warmachine too, even with the display left by these clowns.

Well, why are they saying these things? From my experience, the Warmachine players were very friendly with me, they helped me make lists, learn the rules and helped me to build my force.
If it's your only venue, stick with it, try and find out why they are telling you these things but I can only apologies for their behavior. From what I've seen, this type of player is very rare where I game, maybe try and explain that your set on playing warmachine and your not going to give up playing just because their telling you?

I think you should tell the store owner what has been said to you by a member of his staff (he should care, it's potentially losing him business). I think you should contact privateer press and let them know about the conduct of the press ganger, since he's representing the company he shouldn't be behaving like that.
And I think you should try and find some other warmachine players in your area. I bet there are some, especially if that group is so obnoxious.
Really I can't believe the attitude, we work hard in our group to welcome new people and introduce people to the game- and it's not altruism. We know we're competing with a bigger game, and if we want a good scene and a good chance of getting a game, we have to make sure people play it. Rule 1 of getting people to play with you is to BE NICE. Not rocket science!
Are they like this with everyone or do they just have a particular problem with you? Do you have any negative history with the group?

'Tis a shame.
Several years ago when I picked up Warmachine, I had a similar experience by the established gamers, which has put me off it for life.
Small games like WM only suffer from such idiots, no? After all this industry doesn't do a lot of advertising, and word of mouth is everything.

This must be just a case of a bunch of jerks with poor attitudes. There is a growing Warmachine group at my FLGS, and they have been encouraging people to start playing, even going so far at appropriating a table on 40K night to put on a demon game. I had a hard time getting opponents for 40K at that very same store when I got back into it four years ago, but I persisted and soon some noobs started playing me, and after a year or so, I was enough of a fixture that now they are more open. Just be persistent, they can't hold out on you forever.

Do you know the PG's forum title on the Privateer Press forums and are you a member?
If not, you should join ( www.privateerpress.com).
I suggest joining and then PM'ing him directly, letting him know what you have issue with and explaining that unless he plans to be a more positive and welcoming promoter that you plan to contact PP or the head of the PG program and file a complaint, etc.
Directly address the problem. If he is rude or dismissive to your PM/concerns then you can "out" him in front of his PG peers on that forum or go higher up the food chain as needed. It is a rather small forum community with many active PG and company employees, and your concerns WILL get addressed, and if this guy continues to be a clown on the PP forums he will do so at his own risk. PG that are not doing what is expected DO get the boot if complaints warrant it.

I'll echo whats been said, I also play WM and couldnt be more welcomed into the group of established players. WM needs word of mouth so doesnt help when you get that kind of response to take part.
You would think as ones a pressganger he would be very much more excited that another person wants to take up the game. I would test him again to let you into thier "inner circle" and if he gives you s**t then report him. The Pp company will no doubt have somthing to say and I've found dealing with PP very fast and pleasant.
The store owner must know that he has employed someone that doesnt care about the shop making money. I garentee the manager will have somthing to say. Unless of cousre he family.
But if they are the only ones in your area then stick with it and I hope you get accepted into what sounds like a very private group.

I would also like to hear the other side of the story directly.
These kinds of threads often start off making the uninvolved party sound like Hitler, and then when we get a chance to hear from the other side we learn that things are not so one-sided as we first got led to believe.
This may or may not be the case here, but we only have one source to go by which is sort of a biased and thus people shouldn't assume that what has been said here is 100& accurate.
That is why I suggest talking about this issue with the PG directly and then going to PP if it can't be resolved.
this is a people issue not a WM/PP issue.

is it possible these assclowns ar taking the whole" play like you have a pair" attitude just a bit far? if you read some of the pp lit they are somewhat less than welcoming at times. none of which, if it. os ondeed the case, excuses the behavior youare describing one damn bit.
however, i wouldbe very damn curious about theor side of the story. why are they doing this? if they dislike you personally so much, there must be a reason. a store employee trying to run off bisiness is just hard to swallow. i would certainly take the pg aside one on oneand ask him these questions. you might find that there is more to the equation than you are aware. that might actually be something you could change. not saying thatthis is all your fault, but if you don't know, and its important to you, then you have got to cowboy the feth up and go find out wtf. you owe it to yourself. don't. be an ass, just be cool and ask the questions.

Wargaming in general has such a small population i honestly cant believe anyone would want to discourage new players from entering.
Hell I asked on my FLGS forums if someone had an extra army for me to try before i devoted money to it, and people jumped at offering to help me.
Same with firestorm armada, Axis and Allies, the list goes on.
Its a shame people like this are hindering the minerature gaming crowd...
I would talk to the owner about his employees behavior and send an e-mail to PP, that just rediculous that anyone, especially someone who earns money through gameing, would behave this way.
I have honestly never encountered this, and figured it was exclusive to online gaming. Since if most of those people told me i sucked, uninstal, burn your gak irl, They would get the gak kicked out of them.

I'd definitely contact Privateer and tell them about your PG's behavior. It's far out of line, and he'll hopefully get censured for his rudeness.
As for the rest of the players, sounds like you've got a TFG infestation. I recommend tenting the store and pumping it with heavy duty pesticides.

Laughing Man has it; it's basically a TFG infestation.
They say these things because they have no better excuse than "I'm mean, get used to it." They have also said such things to my friends, only providing me with more incentive to drop the bombs.
I emailed PP and Jen got back to me saying that she will totally look into it. I also emailed the store's other employee, because he cares about what happens in the store and is closer with the store owner. I have yet to get a response, but it could be interesting.

If you really wanna play, memorize what units they use, and bring all the hard counters the next time you play. Proxi models if you must. Then beat them, again and again.

I can't think of a time I've ever had that happen to me.
However, there's always anecdotes I hear around the net. This happens for any and all games as it's more a human condition thing.
And yeah, definitely drop the hammer on that press ganger. That is definitely not the behavior that's needed to promote warmachine, let alone any game.
Even the store owner should be very concerned with that attitude. Bringing in new players to the store is something that a store absolutely must do, and anyone not contributing to a healthy atmosphere for the store is going to doom that store to being driven under by competition from all the online discounters. New players are the lifeblood of the industry.
People go to stores as a place to hang out in a gaming friendly environment, that's the main draw of a store despite paying full retail. And I'm glad to pay full retail when I'm at my local stores because the atmosphere and people are so friendly, I can buy a new unit and immediately get a game in to try it out.
So, if the store owner doesn't do anything, or protests to you, then it's time abandon that store, and make sure to post online and tell others about that store's attitude.

Except I can't do that. These guys are really good players. Besides, I play Rhul, so it'd be hard to do that anyway.

It almost sounds like MMO-type elitism to me.
ie: New guy tries to play and doesn't do very well.
Experienced players rage constantly rather than try and help new guy improve.
While this is at times understandable in MMOs (new guy fails so hard it wipes the raid repeatedly etc) I don't see how it could have a place in Wargaming at all

I got roflstomped by Trollbloods. I don't have much WM stuff, and like I said I play Rhul. I didn't have enough points for the game that my opponent (the store employee) wanted to play, so I was pretty much forced to borrow some stuff. This stuff being:
- Full Boomhowler and Co.
- Rhupert Carvolo
- Reinholdt
None of this (even the Boomhowler unit) synergized with my Rhul, and I lost the Searforge Contract by using it. His whole army, on the other hand, synergized with everything he had. I literally had no answer to any of his units. Late in the game I had nothing but Gorten, Reinholdt, and Carvolo. So I conceded. Then he started spewing.

i don't give a fat rats ass if he tabled you without a model lost. not an excuse, not a legit reason. you need to go make inquiries as to why. find out what besides" hurr durr you suxxor noob derp derp derp". they may be hateful little gaks but there has to be sme kind of rhyme or reason, IF they are worth a feth. if they can't do better than that then you DO need to report that fuckin pg to whassrname pg head. mebbe you smell. mebbe you stutter. mebbe they got tired of having to play ur ary for u. mebbe i don fuckin know. but you need to go find out. you don have the answer. you need to go get it from them. good luck.

Because Warmachine has such a high learning curve (in the not getting tabled sense) I've seen this in a lot of players which led me to not want to play after my first few games. Honestly I can understand being aggressive and whatever, but I have remotely decent strategy and I shouldn't get completely clobbered if the game wants to pretend to be playable by anyone but the uber elite. Let's just say I've never seen a casual WM player (I'm sure there are a few out there, just not that I've seen).

I'd say this is more a problem of disparate skill levels than any problem with the game itself: Warmachine rewards skill far more than RNG, with mismatches being far more commonly due to player skill than army composition. I'd generally suggest trying to learn against other new players, or at least making clear to your opponent that you're still learning the game and he ought to go easy on you.
Mind you, nearly tabling an opponent and getting upset when they concede (especially when they're playing a caster that a one legged sloth could outrun) is rather bad form, no matter if their build or their skill is at fault.

I consider myself a casual warmachine player (play about twice a month), and while I don't win every game I play, I do decently well (especially since I play a caster that isn't necessarily newbie friendly).
