Hello, I love science fiction type things and the look of the Space Marines fits right into my style. I also enjoy the look of the Eldars; however in my case I would like something more for a starting player. (though i've already accidentally bought a few swooping hawks on ebay) I also am looking to try and not spend too much on an army ;just enough to get some strategy going. So far I know I would like two 5 men tactical squads...and a rhino... and that's about it. Could anyone give any suggestions on creating a berserker style space marine army or perhaps even a shooty style army...just anything that does not include the Scout team being that I can't really dig how the Space Marines look w/o their helmets.
THANKS

Welcome to Dakka. If you want a melee focussed marine army have you considered fielding Blood Angels?

I can't stand them myself, bunch of nonces imo, but they are good at close combat there can be no debating that.

"To think that Tyranids are mindless beasts is a grave mistake.... These aliens have shown evidence of both tactics and strategy that speaks of a far worse threat than that posed by a mere beast." - Marneus Calgar, Chapter Master of the Ultramarines

You mentioned Berserkers, maybe Chaos Marines would be worth investigating too.

First of all, welcome !
As for a melee style spacemarine army, give the black templars a look.
Crazy zealots, preferring close combat, out on a crusade to destroy chaos.

Wow awesome thanks guys, now as for a combination of troops on a 500-1000 point scale would I just have like a rhino, 10 tact squad, a captain and a few assault squad guys? Where do the jetpack squad guys fall into (more close combat?) (or less?). To keep money conserved I was just thinking a rhino, captain and 10 tact squad with a combination of upgrades...is this wrong or dumb?

Your questions are a bit outside of what's appropriate to the introductions topic, but as a quick start to get you going:

You should seriously consider getting the Assault on Black Reach set. That'll give you 575 points without considering anything much in the way of special weapons. It'll cost you a lot less than buying the same units separately and you'll also have the beginnings of an Ork army to take on your marines or trade.

Then poke around in the 40K Army Lists section. You'll need to firm up on exactly which army you like best before you commit to where you want to take them.

If you had the marines from the starter set and added a Rhino, 10-man Assault Squad and a Heavy Support choice such as a Predator or an Devastator Squad, you'll easily be over 1,000 points and well on your way to a "standard" 1,500 point army.

Also, try and join or even watch a few games before deciding which Chapter or even army you're going to go with - it would be a bummer to buy a bunch of Blood Angels stuff and then decide you really prefer Space Wolves...

oh shoot, yea I was wondering which subforum to post questions like this was, which one could I use? Getting the starter set would be definitely a smart choice...but it seems that my trading community is limitted to only one other person so I am not sure when I could trade off the extra orks to make up for 77 dollars worth of pieces. I was also a bit skeptical of buying the starter also because I already have a codex and I feel that I might not use the terminators or the dreadnought for a while. I definitely wanted to keep my army a little slimmer (1000 points). I have my eye on a standard 10 man tact squad on ebay for cheap so I am definitely getting that...as well as a rhino but does anyone have any ideas what I could add to this small army to make it beast? Even a default army would work just something I can get started with so I can further find my signature style...

Welcome, if you want a brezerker type army look into a CSM khrone force.

And its already been stated but you should pick up the AOBR kit, its cheap for the amount of models you get.

Welcome as well..

And, in addition to the marines, etc, AoBR also give you templates and a mini rule book.

However, you can also try to pick up "Marine sets" of AoBR alone, if you want to pass on the orks.
