I normally run with only CSMs, so I have a nicely balanced army for the most part however I'm tempted to go all the way with pure Khorne.

So who has had success using a list that doesn't have easy acccess to troop mounted Meltaguns?

You're going to need Havocs and Chosen and Termicide. Lots of Havocs with Autocannons. And Princes. And maybe a Greater Daemon.

You need a way to open armor, at range and up close. Havocs get you the best buy on ranged medium armor busting in the army, Chosen and Termicide will cover you on heavy armor. Termicide will also give you access to Landraiders outside your Heavy Support, which is an option you should consider up around 2k.

When I first started CSM, this was the premise I started with: All Khorne, all the time.

It can work, but you have to support all those rampaging

berzerkers well. You MUST take rhinos for the units of

berzerkers if you want to have any real success.

It would be quite a long post if I were to explain all the ins

and outs of what I have learned running pure Khorne

troops in the past 2 years, but the bottom line is that you

need something besides just berzerkers. Berzerkers are

great, but 59 berzerkers and kharn, all mounted in rhinos

does not work that well. You need multiple units to handle

multiple threats. Support your berzerkers with havoks,

obliterators, defilers, dreadnoughts, terminators, or

whatever you want really, as long as it diversifies what your

army can engage.

Also, if you take all berzerker troops, you cannot afford to

sit on objectives. You must almost always rush toward the

enemy and plan to take your opponents objectives from

him, or play for the table.

A bit long winded, but the simple answer is yes. Just using berzerkers as troops can work very very well. Up until a few weeks ago, it was all I did.

The GW has a nice World Eaters tactica you might want to take a look at.

I'd post the link, but they're doing maintenance ATM.

They do have troop mounted meltas.
It's called combi-melta on rhino.

Also, don't underestimate basic chaos squads with mark of khorne. They provide flamer, meltagun, plasma, and heavy weapon firepower while remaining a khorne trooper. You don't need many, either. Call them khorne initiates or something.

Customers ask me what army I play in 40k. Wrong Question. The only army I've never played is orks.

Model bile enchanced marines as zerkers, make a custon khorne converted hq to act as bile. Enhanced marines with an icon of khorne and 2 melta guns are no joke. They actually cost less, gain s5 in the place of fc, go down to ws4, but the pfist is s10 instead of s9.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Part of the reason for this question is that I'm starting to feel like if you don't play cult troops, you're not really playing chaos. I think it was after SW came out that I felt this way because GH can do anything a CSM squad can but either cheaper or better or both

I agree, the new(ish) codex is more SM: Renegade than Chaos. Now the old one was all about chaos and customability. I sold my Nurgle army out of disgust because I coulden't field them as I like.

Since most CSM lists are based on getting into HtH combat already and that you can look towards your Elite and Heavy slots for anti-tank, how do you compare the +1 attack and higher WS of the Beserker over the value of the Bolter and more bodies for CSMs.

I actually outnumbered an Eldar army with Plague Marines and Abaddon (no joke. I also had Kharn, two terminator squads, and three vehicles). It was rather hilarious as my friend only had a handful of aspect warriors and was mostly filled out by guardians.

On the subject of anti-tank, you have to ask yourself if you really want to stay true to the Khorne theme or just want a mostly khorne army that is balanced. Khorne abhors the guns and there are CC alternatives to anti-tank weaponry. Kharn can tear up vehicles like there's no tomorrow, especially on the charge. You can also take some Land Raiders (which help bring your troops to your enemies while still letting the former charge) and they pack some serious heat. Terminators with Chainfists are also your friend, and can really dish out the hurt if you give them lightning claws. Bikers are also good, since you can kit them out with melta guns and power fists, their superior speed makes them insane against vehicles and elite infantry (a few meltas to the face and the subsequent charge can cause quite a few casualties, even among terminators, or you can turbo boost, wheel behind the enemy, and pound on their rear armor with meltas and fists).

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
