Ok, so before i do this id figure to consult the gaming community for advice, i have a million sprues laying around from my models, and had an idea to melt them down and create terrain with them could this be possible? What do i need, how would i go about doing it, and how time consuming is it.

So what did a squad of Fire Dragons say to the ork stompa?

I'm not sure of how to go about this, but make sure you have good ventalation, I'm sure melted plastic will release toxic fumes

Bad idea! in my opinion, better off using them as a frame to lay modelling clay or plaster strips over! the fumes and smoke are toxic and very strong even small stuff you burn you'd just end up with a black stringy lump, there's probably a way you could melt it like chocolate over hot water but it would take a while and may not get hot enough to melt, i don't know as i've never tried to melt it this way. i'd jsut get some putty stick bits of sprue into it to make a fram the layer it with plaster strips and paint.

Yep, probably more suited to making hills and craters like the tyranid digestion pool? best bet just grab a roll of the plaster bandage stuff (it;s real cheap) and lay it over the frame then seal it and paint. :-) good luck with it dude!

This isn't really a tutorial, I think asking in the painting and modeling forum rather than here would help, ask a mod to move it for you and you'll maybe get a better response.

No, don't burn plastic. It's bad for your health, bad for the ozone layer, and the mess you'll create cannot be used in anway for sculpting, unless you want it to look like... burned plastic.

Violence is not the answer, but it's always a good guess.

I made some ruins using a bunch of old sprue frames I had lying around. I did not melt them or anything, I just cut them into pieces and hot glued them together. The terrain is functional but does not look great I would say, I never bothered painting it. Probably, you could make Ork buildings or other "rustic" looking things with out melting them down.

I wouldnt melt it down...plastic, especially melted is toxic...you better off using the sprues for other things

There are 2 types of plastic - thermosetting & thermoplpastic.
Ploystyrene is a thermoplastic, so technically it can be heated up & reshaped.
See here for more -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polystyrene

I don't advise anyone doing this due to the fumes it will let off & the fact you don't have the right equipment which could lead to creating a fire.
IE DONT DO IT!!

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!
