Imagine this.
You’re a space marine. You and your chapter have just finished cleansing a world of <insert scum here> and are about to kick back with a few, when you are informed that the world you just “saved” is spiralling into it’s sun. No help is coming for you. Its just you vs a sun which has armor eleventybillion.
As everything crushes around you, you feel it instantly as one almighty WHAM and think to yourself “the strength of this attack must be OVER 9000!”, you look down, and see a dice. It shows a 4.
The world and sun finish colliding and you’re left wondering how to get home.

Stupid insta-kills being stopped by armor.

A qoute i once read might explain the situation. "life is not fair." + I wouldent think that you would get a AS from a sun, an IS would be better it thinks

Please, never say that again.

Did you just equate an insta-kill to being engulfed by the sun?

Well the example my local store used was getting hit by a freight train. Which they had to admit just bounces off you into a bush or something if you make your AS.

Strength is obviously a indication of concussive force, and AP is how pointy it is (or equivalent if not a physical round). So the fact that only the pointiness matters seems a tad crazy when it comes to insta-kills.
For treatment of single wounds sure, anything that gets through hurts. But the fact that ANYTHING can bounce off cause its not point enough is slowed.

i would think that a better example is getting hit by a train and you bouncing off with not perminent damage, still able to fight. You can still fight but you arnt dead. A Sm 1 wound is the difrence between unable to fight and being able to fight. Theres a lot of gray area that it would be to complecated to fill in in a game.

No matter how strong the weapon is, it needs to penetrate armor to do damage.

A krak missile is just going to bounce off a Mega Nob, because his armor is simply too thick to penetrate the armor, doing no damage to the nob itself. But hit it with a meltagun, its gonna burn right through his armor and mess him up.

I think being within the Sun would qualify as a Special Terrain Feature: all models within the area of terrain sustain a STR 9000 AP1 hit every turn they are within the terrain. My Farseer is toast on average the second turn.

Well, different types of suns have different AP's. Pulsars are actually ap -1... they just break the damn game. Not fair at all.

getting put in a microwave is the closest we will come to reality when it comes to sun terrain

There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

I'm gonna put sun under "dangerous terrain" category.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

First of all the sun would melt your armor...although long after it cooked you inside it.

Secondly, the planet would melt/explode before it even came in contact with the sun, resulting in hundreds of dangerous terrain checks.

So Insta-kills saves from armor aren't even a valid argument in this case.

Hey, it was the OP that said the Sun is only somewhere between AP4 and AP- when the Marine passed (or even got) his Armor Save.

Seriously...realism and rules do not mix.
Rules in 40K are not meant to be 'real'.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
In addition, if a situation like this came up, it's not a failing of the Instant death/armor save rules, it's a failing of the Sun's Rules.

IMO, it should act like a stationary vortex grenade that draws you in and then you are removed from this reality/life/blah/blah/blah.
