I played 40K second edition when I was in middle school and early high school. I also played Fantasy, Necromunda, Epic, Gorka Morka, warzone, and a couple of other games. I just went out and bought the newest 40k box set. I need to go to my parents basement to get the rest of my stuff, but I have a lot of minis.

I have/had (I haven't seen what is lost/missing yet):

Space Wolves - roughly 3,000 points w/ 2nd edition predator, Land Raider, Bjorn the Fell handed, wolf guard and then some joe Marines
Imperial Guard - roughly 1,500 points w/ Valhalla warriors, Leman Russ, Basilisks, the jungle dudes (haha forgot their names) and some artillery
Tyranids - roughly 3,000 to 4,000 points w/ a crap ton of gene stealers, some termangants, a few carnifexes, a hive tyrant, some of the spore things
Eldar - roughly 2,000 points - far seer, warp spiders, banshees, avatar, guardians, etc
Space Orks - no clue on points got the Orks from the 2nd edition box set, gorka morka box, and now the newest box set
additional characters - assassins, mercs, and other random minis + a small hybrid army since gene stealers + my imperial guard = hybrid for the most part a few Grey Knights and few Chaos minis, etc.

Fantasy:
Lizzardmen - roughly 2,000 to 2,500 points


These points were based off the 2nd edition rules, so no idea how many points now. I have tons of old rogue trader model marines (mark 7 armor) and tons and tons of old school Epic minis. I am wondering what is obsolete and what is still being used? It looks like a lot of special characters are gone which I think is a good thing. I hated how assassins could just screw up a whole army.

Basically, I started playing Starcraft II and it made me miss 40k. So my buddy and I are building a gaming table in his basement. He already went to his folks house and got his minis, and I am going to get mine this weekend probably. Any advice, or things I should avoid look out for? I was told to avoid the Necrons as their army sucks. The Tau don't really interest me. My eldar army I think I may want to convert into a dark eldar.

On a side note I was looking up my old models on Ebay, and dang, they are actually worth money. My buddy has that HUGE Warzone resin tank kit too. I have like the old Banelord and Imperator Titan and stuff.

Oh and PS - What is the best way to strip plastic/metal model? I am sure my 12 year old paint jobs need to be repainted.

welcome to dakka, and for plastic i use simple green, and for metal just use paint spripper and buy new bases as they will be a black lump of goo...

Simple Green? OK I will look that up. I can only imagine I will want to repaint everything as I was 12 to 14 when I painted those the first time around. Also, I noticed all the new minis are plastic kits, where as almost all of my old ones are pewter.

Any idea how the point systems compare? Trying to figure out if I will need to invest in new stuff or not. I sort of want to build an Ogre Army for Fantasy now, and then just revamp my Space wolves.

Welcome to dak dak¡ For metal and plstic Super Clean works the best. Just be sure to use gloves and in a well ventilated area. King Cracker would be proud!

a note about simple green, it takes a few days to penetrate the paint (if its spray paint, but acrylic may take a few hours if its 1 layer thick)

I haven't played since second edition and I see they took out a lot of special characters. That makes me happy, no more stupid Marneus Calgar to worry about!

Ha you still have Marneus Calgar to worry about. He is there just not used as much as back then probably. Nah Vulkan is more of the pain now.

OK I have a lot of stuff I found tonight

huge space wolf army, commanders, land raider, predator, bjorn, storm caller, terminators, vindicator
Imperial guard 3 to 4 squads lots of ordinance, a resin kit baneblade, 2 leman russ
Eldar - warp spiders, guardians, warp prism, avatar, dreadnaughts, walkers
Tyrands tons and tons of genestealers, hive tyrant a few carnifi (carnifixes?) some spores
orks - 2nd edition box orc figs, 5th edition box orc figs (I just bought those) and the gorka morka box set

Then I found my epic stuff....an Imperator Titan, a Banelord....

and I found my full box of Necromunda stuff, and I even had an un opened pack of Goliaths, hahaha

Unfortunately, my mom wasn't all that gentle so I got some repair work to do and I need to repaint most of it.

Can't wait to play though

well to be fair I was playing Epic and 40K 2nd Edition when I was like 11 or 12 so older now yes, but I was young when I started playing.

I still got my 2nd Edition books, I found my Necromunda books and I found my Warzone books. Anyone here ever play Warzone? It was a cool system based on action points.

Hahaha, Marneus made me quit my Tryanid army for a while. I didn't have an army book for them and he would just obliterate all my space bugs in hand to hand. Give him the 2+ fixed power field and the only way to kill him was hand to hand.
