So I found some great tutorials on magnets and plastic kits, but what about metal ones?
I tried it out on my dreadnaught and it didn't turn out well. The weapons swap out, but the magnets will not hold the arm in place, since the metal is just too heavy. I probably gotta use magnets and pins huh?
Thanks,

Magnet > Magnatize > Magnat?
But yeah, pins are usually a good idea for metal models.

Stronger magnets perhaps? I managed to magnetize my dread just fine, althought I think I put the magnet in abit crooked, so it's possible that the weapon stays in place cause the body is in the way

Use strong magnets with a lot of magnet-to-magnet surface contact. Also, pin your models.
I magnetized an old Fire Prism just fine this way.

I got some strong magnets from here:
http://www.rare-earth-magnets.com/p-23-nsn0591.aspx
They work great on plastic, but I may need to get stronger ones for the metal models I have. Most of my models are from second edition so I have a lot of metal ones

Thanks,
Ring shaped magnets and some brass pins are the only way I could conceive of doing it, but even then you're gonna need to be pretty good with a fine tip dremel bit so's to make a recess to hold the magnet. Metal is both heavier than plastic, and also less responsive to adhesives.
Link to the smallest rings I can find.

I had some pewter Auto and lascannons from sentinel kits i wanted to use. i just a larger magnet. the first atempt was too small causing the
weapon to droop. then i also used double magnets on one of the lascannons.

Not sure about dreads. I've only thought about how to do that and I would go with what other people have already suggested; pinning. I would even consider two parallell magnets if one is not enough.
When it comes to arms, like the tyranids', it has worked well for me to greenstuff the shoulder so it doesn't fit 'perfectly' (as in not having extra space left) in the socket. On tyranids this works fine, since you can't tell if the magnets touch each other or not and the connection between arm and body is still perfect. Just a little more friction there than without the GS. With strong magnets, it's not an issue if they are not in contact. For big arms I use 3 mm magnets that can hold 130-150-ish grams. Works like a charm.

I sold it, sorry man. i decided to not use any Sentinels a while ago, and now wish i'd held on to some of the completed ones.

Steel washer around the arm mounting pin.
TWO magnets in the arm. On opposite sides of the socket.
That's what I use in my Grey Knight dreads (both of which are METAL SM dreadnoughts (looks like the current plastic, only metal).
I use a pair of 3x1 neo magnets and a washer. Even holds the powerfist arm UP (you need two to prevent rotation around the pin, one won't do squat unless it is bigger, and I mean 5mmx3mm)

Drill a hole, put a brass pin in it, then put a ring magnet around the base of the brass pin. It'll work fine. Put the mounting at a bit of an angle to prevent it from rotating under the weight of the metal. Also, you could use counter polarity in multiple magnets to make a "locking" magnetized pose.

Which Dreadnought?
I know you're saying it's metal, but is this the standard one or the Furioso or some other variant?
Can you post a picture of whatever you've already done?

Standard one. Twin-linked lascannon or assault cannon or multimelta (it WAS actually a "Blood Angels" dreadnought with a 'furioso' banner - according to the box - but it had those three weapon (right) arms and a missile launcher L arm. None of this two DCCW 'furioso' stuff.).
GK can't have DCCW furioso dreads (and I will NEVER play an army that can.).
The washers are obvious unless the arms are attached, then they simply look like part of the arm rotation mechanism.
Will see about getting a pic of it up.

Sorry, my question was aimed at the OP.
But your solution was clever - I had been thinking about a pair of magnets in the body (either side of the pin) and a corresponding pair in the arms, but the way you describe has the benefit of not having to align the opposing sets and, presumably, you can still reposition the arm.

Yes. You can still rotate the arms or remove them for damage results. You can have an arm raised or lowered and it stays in place.
One magnet is fine (on each arm) for a plastic or resin arm, but two will hold even the metal arm and three will hold it even tighter, yet still allow the rotation.

yes pics please!
My models in question are the original Bjorn the Fell handed pewter model and about 15 to 20 pewter space wolves in terminator armor (captain, wolf guard, rune priests). If you could post some pics of how you did this I would greatly appreciate it. I just liberated all the models from my parents house from when i was a kid (back in 2nd edition 40K) and I never once thought of using magnets back then. I think it is genius, and since I technically don't need to upgrade anything all my old models still work. I was in middle school when I played so I stripped my really bad paint jobs (hey I was 12!) and now I want to magentize everything. I really don't want to reinvest in the hobby all that much but I definitely want to reconfigure it. So if I feel like slapping on lighting claws on all my wolf guard I can do so no problemo. Not sure if I can magnetize the cyclone missile launchers though...
The original Bjorn was a standard dreadnaught kit with the Bjorn Add ons. I also picked up and traded tons of random parts over my several years of gaming. So I would love to magnetize all my metal figs to swap out their gear

Models that size you can just glue oversized disc magnets into the shouler/arm joins for termies. They will look a little odd unless you also shave the recesses, but I wouldn't even attempt it on a pewter mini without a dremel.

OK well I was thinking about buying some Terminator weapon sprues so I could keep the metal bodies but use the plastic arms/weapons with magnets in them...
Just bought some sprues off ebay for a few bucks each
