****The Saragon Sector is an Imperial stronghold on the eastern edge of navigable space in the Ultima Segmentum. The sector is known to contain several active but so far benign Necron Tombs, the distinguishing feature of which is the unusual brass colour to their armour****

I was given some money to spend on frivolous things a couple of months ago and decided to start my second 40k army. Although I tried to start the hobby during Second Edition, when I was a kid, I never kept it up; the need for a hobby to keep myself sane meant that I dusted off my old Marines in 2008 but after 2 years and a few thousand point I was looking for something new and Necrons fitted what I wanted from an army.

I started with an army box, an extra box of warriors and a Lord on foot. I wanted a quick and easy paint job that was a bit warmer than the traditional dark silver and remembered a mate’s work on GW Grimsby's Fortress of Redemption statues which he had done in Brass/Bronze with Verdigris.

My first squad was done with red trim, and I decided to paint the rods as I don't like translucent plastic. I tried object source lighting on the first Warrior or two, but it didn't work well so I abandoned the idea. This is my largest squad of warriors:

Next were the Scarabs. I preferred using 3 per base to represent the attacks and wounds, but I'm thinking of stripping them off and putting as many as possible on the bases as I have loads of spares now, plus I have way more than the maximum 10 bases for a unit:

I then painted a Lord, but wasn't happy with the job, so he's been stripped down again. I did however do the three Destroyers!

Next on the list were the remaining 20 Necrons. I decided to do their trims in different colours, to indicate different squads and represent different Tombs within the sector. I was happiest with the blue, which is why I have taken it as my main trim colour from now on:

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Whilst playing with the models that I had bought myself, I was offered a load of models for free (although I will be giving a load of Marine spares to the guy). This included a big load of metal models.

The first guys I painted from the new models were the Immortals to accompany my Lord on foot. I chose blue as the trim colour for these guys; I'm still not sure if I want to pick out the faces like the GW paint scheme, but I guess they look cool as they are anyway:

Next I painted two Destroyers, using Blue trim again - they don't quite match my 3 original ones but at some point I want two squads so it should work out Here's a close-up of one that I'm really happy with!

After painting the two Destroyers, I had a go at a Lord on Destroyer body. I wanted something different to the metallic scheme that I had used on the bulk of the army, so had a go at painting the whole model using nothing but different blues, a touch of silver and Badab Black.

I had a bit of a break after finishing the Lord and had a go at some Flayed Ones. I've tried three different schemes so far and I'm not entirely happy with any of them, although I'm edging towards the red skinned one:

And finally (for now), I tried my hand at a Tomb Spider. I really dislike this model; it's not poseable and needed some light putty work to get the legs in a slightly different pose. For the base I used a 60mm MC base with a putty dune holding a steel rod in place which the Spider is attached to. I've also put some scarabs on the base for a bit of detail. I've got another spider waiting to be painted, but I'm not sure I have the heart to struggle with another one of these things!

I still have 2 Lords on foot; some homebrew flayed ones, some metal flayed ones, the Nightbringer, a pair of Wraiths, another Spider and a bunch of Warriors and Scarabs to finish. I'm also looking to get a Monolith and a Tomb Stalker or two before the new codex comes out (whenever that is).

Sorry for those of you who have already seen some of these, but I'll try and keep it all in this thread from now on

Incredible verdigris indeed. Care for sharing the scheme? My Beastmen currently use an a bit too simple to their bronze, (just hawk turqouise + DA green watered) but I would like to try this out.

For those of you who have asked for a P&M blog on how to do the brass, here's a step by step.

First step is to undercoat in black, second is drybrush in Boltgun (although Mithril would give a brighter finish), third is a drybrush of Dwarf Bronze, fourth is a wash of watered down hawk turquoise (wet) and fifth is the same stage but dry. You can see here how the wash tones down the bronze/brass colour:

Here's my latest model, a Lord on foot with Ressurection Orb and Staff of Light.

He is done with a slightly different painting method; Tin Bitz instead of Dwarf Bronze and Ice Blue instead of Hawk Turquoise.
For some reason my camera picked up the grain of the metal making the paint look much thicker/grainier than it really is :(

Ah, thanks for that. Very helpful!
(I assume that the last stage is hawk turqouise drybrush)

No, it's just what the wash looks like when it's dry

You can finish with a drybrush of Bronze if you want to bring some of the bright metallic look back.

Here's my second Tomb Spider, I've taken the critisim about the eye colours of the last one and gone for a "Matrix" red.

It's just thin strips of plasticard cut to shape. I'm not happy with them, but as I don't use my Flayed Ones anyway it's no big loss

Minor update in the first post to show some updated Red Destroyers and re-based Scarabs - I've also re-based all my Warriors and Immortals with a better sand but I can't be bothered to upload new pictures

EDIT: Also changed the tutorial picture so that the paints are labelled on each stage

The sand is meant to make them look like they're in a completely barren desert, I'm not sure if I want to add some Dead or Burnt Grass, what do people think?

Nice! I love aged brass! Looks great.

One thing I learnt from doing it with my skaven.. mix ultramarines blue and dark angels green. It'll give you a hawk turquiose-ish green but in paint form.. then you can either water slightly or lightly drybrush over the metal itself.

Your first tomb spider easily looks the best because the verdigris goes outside the gaps and is on the brass itself.. do this with your actual cron troops and they'll look much more aged and intimidating! Just my .02.

After a long slumber the Necrons of the Saragon Sector awaken again with re-enforcements!

I haven't added Verdigris on these, I imagine that when they phase they leave any corrosion behind!

And re-enforcements for my Blue squad Warriors They're second hand so please forgive the bad poses!

All this is because of a big birthday present I bought myself
