Hey everyone,

So with the holidays over, and all of the loot handed out, I received the beginnings to a new army, Da Orkz. So I decided (after seeing Gitsplitta's threads) that I would create a thread that shows my army as it gets built and painted. I make no claim to be an expert of any greenstuff modeling, painting, or anything relating to the models, so comments and constructive criticism are always welcome here. So without any further delay I present you 1 of my first two HQ choices, a Big Mek with a KFF and pk (at least until I can get an actual model with a pk and kff)

Since I received a Big Mek with Bosspole for xmas, I tried to convert bits and pieces of it to give the appearance of a kff (the little orbs on his back) and a pk (little spikey things on his ccw)

I've got a 2 boxes of Ork Boyz as the start of two different units of boyz, so I've got two rokkit launchas that I wanted to toy with how some of the boyz and the launchas looked, so here we go:

First we've got our Tusken Ork

An Ork that may have over estimated his rokkit:

Thats all i have right now, any comments would be appreciated as I start to build this army.

Pics serve two purposes... first it's how you get people to look at and stay interested in your blog... second it's how we (your viewers) have some way of providing helpful advice. If nothing else get one out there complete so we can start making comments on your color scheme and technique. Just keep in mind that if you put things out for comment... that occasionally it's a good idea to actually follow the advice! ;-)

You don't have to take ALL the advice of course... but if you say "no thanks" to everything... (I've seen it), people will lose interest.

I'll post a picture tonight, I need to finish at least one ork boy to get a basic color scheme down. (rough one in my head, though I've been trying to get a Clan color scheme).

Just a quick update (and a sad notice that it appended my last post and no bumpage). I'm thinking I might purty up these orks with a little yellow for some Bad Moon Clan Orkz, I'm just curious as to what people think about the yellows needed for the cloth etc.

Any thoughts on paints would be updated (most likely not using GW paints, as I'm almost out of, and have been switching to dropper bottles with more recent paint purchases).

Not bad Alf. Two simple suggestions.

1. drill the gun barrels
2. put some sepia wash on the teeth and skull, you can even dilute it a little bit first (just a little), they give a light drybrush over the top (when the wash is dry) of whatever color you used to do the teeth and skull in the first place

I need to buy a hobby drill. I've got more models on the way from a fellow dakkaite to help round out my army.

The skin is a little dark on my orks at the moment. How do you paint yours gits?

Okay... So it's been a while since I've been able to work on my orks. I bought some reaper yellows, and was not happy with the result. So I've been kinda turned off with how some of my boyz look. So, I opened an old Tyranid Carnifex that I had bought back in August for the pure and simple pleasure to paint it (small metal model, not like the new one). I was dismayed that my carnifex, completely sealed, was missing it's right leg. So I called up our friendly local GW customer service. Was treated really nicely, and about a week ago, I received a brand new Carnifex model. So I took to painting (and while I'm sorry I forgot to give you teasers as I worked on it, I do have in progress photos. He's mostly finished... there are some touch up jobs that I can't quite hit with my unsteady hands, and he still needs a base.

Usually I prime in grey, with my bad eyes, it allows me to get a good range of colors without straining to see detail in black, but I used a white primer/undercoat so I could get the "faded" sort of color on the tyranid.

After priming it white, I took Gryphonne Sepia, and put a few layers on, making sure that it looked smooth over the flat areas but sunk nicely into the recesses of the model. (there are some splotchy parts, but over all it looks good).

Then for the claws, hooves, anything sharp, I took and used Charadon Granite. And then for the armor plating/carapace, I used Astronomican Grey.

After I let all of that sit and dry, I took Asurmen Blue to cover the carapace pieces. This took several washes (three coats) to get the color as deep as I wanted. Its a little hard to see in most of the pictures, but this 'fex stands taller than most, I took the main torso piece, and basically turned it around. He's standing up a little taller, and seems just that more menacing. For the little fleshy underpices I took and washed with 2 coats of Baal Red. And then since the adrenal glands are normally placed on the top of the carapace, it would only fit down by his butt :(. So I took and glued it to his chest trying to make it look like it was piercing his ribcage to hit all the important organs with adrenaline . Everything got the same colors as the rest of the fex, but for the brain looking part of the gland, I washed it with a thinned Leviathan Purple, and then a Baal Red wash over it.

So if you're looking for greenskins I'm sorry :( I've just got to get my groove back, kinda like Stella, but manlier . Also, I received some space marines from a player quitting the hobby at my local store, a bad amalgamation of space wolves and space marine models, and an odd paint job, probably gonna throw them in some simple green, and burn my hands cleaning them off (everyone loves chemical burns).

Nice Tyranid! Another one of my fav armies! Just a personal nitpick (I do understand you said he's not quite done) I have is that the tongue and teeth should be painted a different color than the body. Otherwise I like how he looks.

The tongue currently is elf flesh with a Baal Red Wash, my camera died between those old pictures and when I added it after my last post. I need to wait until a friday night after a trip to the bar before I can have the steady hands I need to pick out the teeth. Because of the two big spikes coming off his jaw, I am probably going to pick out the teeth in the same colors.

Also, I've worked in a kitchen for about 5 years, and I can never get the control I like with wet, soapy models. So what I've done the last time I used Simple Green, I soaked the pieces, and took a toothbrush to them. I used one hand to fetch pieces out of the Simple Green, and hold it while the other hand scrubbed with the brush. After all of that, I felt like a dentist took some Novocaine to my hand. It was on a monolith I'm working on with a friend, we tried a painting effect and screwed up the model, but we'll have pictures when we're finished with it.

So its been a long time since I've updated this blog (over a month in fact). I've been on a 40k craze starting several armies and not painting them.

My Orks are not much farther than they were about a month ago. I had a bit of 40k adhd.

After helping my friend with his monolith project, which can be found here. I've been on a bit of an MEQ kick... I found some really good deals on some really nicely painted Ultramarines. Well it brought about a love for the chaos if you will. After reading Imperial Armour 9, and hearing a review of IA:10 on the Independent Characters Podcast, I've started to look at the Red Corsairs to build from the ground up. My original idea was to get some normal space marines and paint them in the Astral Claws colors, but I figured that we're far enough into the future that they've probably recolored their armor. So I have the beginnings of the force and just couldn't wait to build the core units, so I started with one of my HQ units.

May I present Unguis the Mad. A Daemon Prince, former champion of the Red Corsairs.

He is an experiment in more than just building him. I've also tried Airbrushing recently (my buddy has a really cheap one). I mixed several different companies' paints to achieve this color.

Colors Used:
Reaper Pro Series: Blood Red (10 drops or so), very different shade of red than the GW one.
GW Scorched Brown (5 drops), and because I didn't think it was quite dark enough...
Vallejo Charred Brown (3-4 drops).

He's much dark in real life than he is in this picture, but next step is to start brightening the armor pieces, and give the skin a good wash to bring out some of the details.

So its been a few days since I've posted, and spring break has come and gone. And while it was here, I left my camera back in school. So I managed to snap a quick wip picture of my daemon prince. and the color scheme I'm going for.

Being a Red Corsair means lots of red, black and gold. So I hope I hit that on the mark.

Here is the shot before spring break.

So there is a lot more painting going on in this picture than I thought.

Any bony protrusions are painted with Charadon Granite and washed with a sepia wash.

It is really hard to see, but the top of the wings were simply washed with Baal red over the basecoat several times. For the bony parts of the wings, I put a few thin layers of paint that uses the same colors as the skin, but 10 drops of the Vallejo Charred Brown and only 3-4 drops of the Reaper Blood Red.

The armor pieces were done in probably the worst way possible. Since the entire model was the skin color of the daemon prince, I had to choose to either build up from that, or from black. Since there are basically three layers to the armor pieces, I took a fine brush and painted the black spots first, this was not an easy task with an unsteady hand. Then I went and built up several thin layers of Reaper's red on the main surface of the armor. Then the gold trim was done with an undercoat of scorched brown, shining gold, and then dulled with a thin devlan mud wash.

Since I had a lot of free time over spring break, but no camera :(

Unguis the Mad received the attention he deserved.

Please feel free to comment, I know this blog is no longer greenskins, but I'm just trying to get my painting out there (very hard to do as there are plenty of awesome painters on this site)

And as a side note: Since I'm building a Chaos army, I was wondering if anyone could give tips on what units to avoid, what units to take? I'm probably going to avoid any and all elite choices (my proxy terminators just aren't working well for me), and it would open up more points for other things.

-Alf

So, got a little bit more painting done. I'm not entirely sure what else is going in this Red Corsairs army with the exception of some normal Chaos Space Marines.

This new piece is the other HQ unit for my army. While I'm painting Red Corsairs, I'm not planning on using Huron because I like the model and I like what he does, but I like the idea of two "lesser" ranked leaders running a small band of the Red Corsairs. So I present my Chaos Lord, who still needs a name. He's not complete yet, as I've noticed some very small details that I missed, but the camera picked up.

Also, hopefully this doesn't auto-append

Hey everyone, I thought I would need a more appropriate place to show off anything that I build and paint. So. I've got about 2000 points of Ultramarine goodness, and don't like any of the "Ultramarine leaders" So.... I thought I would do a little bitz bashing to create an HQ unit that I like.. May I present: Vulkan He'stan... or in this "ultra" iteration... Captain Quintus Falconis Sertoris.

My question is, do you like him? do you think he's utter trash, would you be okay with him as a count-as? I wish I could improve him, but I don't have any greenstuff-fu, so I had to rely on the bitz in my box.

looks a bit over complicated as a single model tbh. like sepratly the convertions look like the combo of the power fist and the axe, and then the base and pose. and even the flamer with the carni tail on it. but these could all be better worked into an entire squad rather then 1 model. my advice is to keep the axe and the power fist, lose the nid tail and flamer, and maybe look into ways of making a really cool heavy flammer arm that does'nt over power the model. liking the other stuff you have on here, and your nid scheme is very cool. subbed keep up the good work

Thanks. Yeah he does look a little over crowded, but I was trying to think of a different way to represent Vulkan without all of the Salamanders iconography (That metal model is extremely crowded) And while his arms are crowded, I still think he looks pretty simplistic because of the openness of the pose. I will admid that the nid bit was a poke of fun at my two armies. My tyranids have space marine bits strewn about the bases and my Land Raider has Carnifex bits strapped to its hull, so in keeping with my theme, I stuck that spiky bit on his right arm for that reason, and so i could avoid breaking the flamer as I tried to modify it to fit on the arm. At the moment, the flamer is from the AOBR set, so I took it, cut off the pieces I could (like the hand that holds the trigger, etc) but I couldn't remove the hand on the underside of the flamer with my tools. So I glued it in place, which looked cool in its own right, but that blasted hand required me to cover it up since I couldn't cut it.

So, I've been busy with finals, and haven't had much time to devote to hobby progress this week, but after having built my Vulkan count-as, I just couldn't let him sit there unpainted. So.... I took some time and painted him to what I feel is a better job (I actually went back over after washing thee model in badab black). I stink at taking wip shots. Usually I tend to sit, paint to almost completion, and sit back either proud or dismayed with my work. So Captain Quintus Falconis Sertoris has decided to don his Ultramarine power armor and take a walk around on the battlefield.

This first shot shows most of the work finished on the model. I put down a layer of white primer to make him a little brighter (my earlier ultramarines are a very dark blue). Next I painted everything with a mix of 2:1:1 Mix of Ultramarines Blue: Regal Blue : Black paint. After the paint dried, I ran over the model with a wash of badab black. All of the metallic parts had yet to be done. The fur on his shoulder and cape were done with Reaper Paint: Shield Brown. To show a difference between the fur and the underside of the leather I washed the fur with devlan mud, and a light wash of Gryphonne Sepia went onto the 'underside' of the leather.

I then went back over the model with ultramarines blue leaving a line of darker color underneath; near the edges of pieces. You can see it best on the leg of this picture. As you can see,I tried to greenstuff the chaos symbol off of the axe (my greenstuff fu only allowed me to cover the blade lol).

For the metallics, I took a VERY watered down layer of black to darken up the white of anything that would eventually receive the gunmetal treatment. Instead of a darker undertone for the gold, I used the shield brown to create a lighter base for shining gold. I actually like it a lot more than using scorched brown to be my base.

With this photo below, you can see the beginnings of the power weaopn. I tried to smooth out and shave down the greenstuff to make it look actually sharp. I painted the greenstuff white, and after it dried, I covered it with a blue ink (like it much better than the azurmen blue wash). Well apparently I didn't file or shave well enough because I noticed there were some of my fingerprints still on the power weapon, so I thought from a distance it looked kinda cool, representing sort of an ebb and flow to the whole power aura.

And finally... I tried to do that sort of lightning crackle that I've seen on power weapons (but with a much bigger learning curve, because I don't have a fine brush hand. So I took Regal Blue, did jagged lines around the blade on both sides, and then followed it up with a line of Vallejo Wolf Grey.

Edit: All Parchment colors were done with Reaper Linen White and a wash of Sepia, All red was done with a Reaper Deadrose Red (they were sitting on my painting station from my Warmachine: Menoth army...
