I hate Sentinals, but in a Guard force they can be handy in flanking armor and troops, weapons vary versus target. Tanks use las-cannon, auto-cannon and troops use hvy flammer, bolter and hope for the best.

^ basically what he said, Outflank em and pop some Mechs,
Lascannon - Good especially if you are seeing alot of high AV types
Autocannon - If you dont trust You BS 3, put more shots into it, not as effective but its cheap and and still has some punching power

they're a harassment unit. They show up out of nowhere and surprise your opponent with a side lascannon shot or by getting into close combat with a troops choice holding an objective.

They're also a cheap way to give cover to tanks.

When I used them for a few games, I had decent results from giving them Autocannons and an HK missle. The idea is they outflank, cause some trouble, and then distract the opponent until they die.

I've been giving serious thought to painting mine bright orange to make them even harder to ignore. Look, a distraction!

Look at your comment. Back to mine. Back to yours NOW BACK TO MINE. Sadly, it isn't mine. But if you stopped trolling and started posting legitimate crap it could LOOK like mine. Autocannon or heavy flamer. Outflank and either shoot side/rear armour on vehicles or roast and charge infantry squads. Use in squadrons of two or on their own.

Gheh. If you're getting side and rear armor shots (and you are), Autocannons are more effective.

Auto cannon, HK missile. Since often they last only 1 turn, if you are using them to get side shots might as well take a 1 use weapon.

I use mine fairly frequently... Multilaser isn't bad (Str 6 for side/rear armor), I think Autocannon is a better overall choice... If I can spare the 5 points/per... Heavy Flamer is nice against some forces like Marine Scouts, Tau with their scout types, etc... But if they know it's coming not likely to do much with that... For me it's the ML/AC, 2-5 of them coming in to hit the rear/flank...

Notabot: <Looks around, then whispers> I agree with you.

This is one of the few cases that i would advocate mounting an H/K. For exactly the reasons notabot said. but only on a lascannon, missile launcher, or Autocannon armed Scout(maybe multilazer if you are going for low AV models).

Multilaser works for a general harassment outflanking Sent, as does missile launcher(you do not necessarily need an H/K on these variants)

lascannon and Autocannon sentinels are for anti-armor/anti-transport roles ad therefore an H/K is a good idea. Outflanking is nice but also means you are not going to have that sentinel next turn, better hope you do some damage.

Heavy Flamer is for Pure outflank troop harassment, but combined with move through cover you should also be assaulting whatever you are Flaming.

Armored sentinels should only ever have plasma Cannons, and be supported by other units. having a front AV high enough to ignore most troops(and walker anti-grenade rules) means that you could use your Armored sents to tarpit some large enemy units, but only after you have put a few plasma blasts on the opponents CC-Anti Tank units(any thing with either S6+, 4+w/rending, or 2d6 armor pen rules).

one last thing: Squadron-ing your scouts is fine, but never squadron armored sentinels, you gain no benefit, only the drawback(they already have free extra armor)

As most of the posters before have noted outflanking and harassing.

I have had allot of success with 2x plain autocannon 1 machine units, especially at lower points values [500-1250]. I have not yet used a HK missile with them as 10pts for a one shot 50/50 missile is better spent on other units IMHO. Thats about a 25% increase on the model, a big increase for what is essentially a cheap distraction. But I wont pretend that I have not been tempted though.

Contary to what is opined above I find that Sentinals can be quite durable if you can keep to cover.

I can recount a few eample where I have used them to good effect.

1) [Objective game vs SM] I had one appear on my left flank behind a Vindicator out of LOS but able to fire along the enemy baseline @ a Dread. On disabling the Dread next turn it stepped out of cover and took a pot shot at the Vindi, which that spent the rest of the game moving either to cover or trying to engage the sentinal and not vaping the advancing Guard squads that it should have been.

2) [Troops KP only vs Kan Wall] Again appearing on the left flank far behind the advancing Kan Wall but next to the enemy Grot Squads. It gunned some Grots down and charged sweeping all before it [with a little luck ]. Earning me a valuable KP. The enemy then had to redirect two units of buggies to deal with it, which allowed me to concetrait fire on an advancing MegaDread [for another KP and win the game. Panic has battle report from the Platinum Devil Tournament in the Tourney section of Dakka.

I use a squad of 3 armed with autocannons. A distraction unit for sure and they can bring a sudden burst of firepower on one flank. The lascannon armed ones get expensive too fast. I use mine for AT duties and they can shoot and assault enemy tanks hugging the backfield. Take that fireprism! . It should be noted however that like most things guard they die to a stiff breeze.

You shouldn't be worried about the one bullet with your name on it, Boldric. You should be worried about the ones labelled "to whom it may concern"-from Blackadder goes Forth!

A strange place

I normaly choos autocannon or heavy flamer.

just a question. Can you use them the same as a kan wal?
Is it effective?

I use them vanilla (meaning just the multilaser)...

And I just use them singly, not in squadrons, and always to outflank...

great nuisance value unit...and a good 35 point filler unit...and you can be surprised at the lengths some guys will throw to get rid of it...

I find them especially effective in coordination with other outflankers (outflanking platoon, or skimmer units)..the astropath is very useful to get a good chance that these come out at the same time, and also gives you a better chance to choose the sides where they outflank...

Not tried it, but I would suggest not on its own no matter how many you put together. Where a Kan Wall works is the many attacks with DCCW they can deliver on top of the numerous AV10-11? hulls.

The only way that I can think of a Sentinal being used that is similar would be as a mass screen for something else advancing while delivering HW damage. The screen unit would then reveal a real short range monster in the absence of of that high strength CC power that Kans have. Here I would suggest a combo of Demolishers, Hellhound variants and Chimera bourne Ogryns. Would it work though? Not sure....but it sounds like fun
