Update #95
Apr 8 2015
Back to the Backers!
First and foremost,
Please update your shipping address here: backer.kingdomdeath.com
If you are a webstore (black friday) or paypal backer and do not have access, message me immediately.
This just came in this morning. Please note its only a schedule for printing production for the core game. It is not the shipping or fulfillment dates.
A lot of stuff happened in the past 2 months.
We met our print deadline, mentioned last update.
Plastic production is now 100% finished and it has been transported to the company handling the printing and packaging.
Core Game packaging has been approved by me, I’ve been given a timeline. (see above!)
Our Tray that holds the game components is done and it's awesome.
All the files for the expansions have been checked and evaluated by the printing company. We aim to sign off on the fine details this week.
Challenge scenarios got another round of polish.
Actually played some games besides Kingdom Death. Of the bunch, Core World and Power Grid were the favorites.
Starting to lay down the ground work for projects that will support Kingdom Death:Monster. Such as video tutorials, an online glossary and some form of a message board.
I slept.
The game box has been finalized! Its huge, heavy and I couldn't resist going for a black on black design. If I saw this game on a shelf as a kid, I would have killed myself pulling it down to check out. Clearly, this makes it the perfect box for Kingdom Death: Monster.
Here is a quick peak at the Gorm Sprue. I'll go over the Gorm Expansion next update!

Wow, that box is heavy!
I can hardly believe that we are in the closing stages now, hopefully it won't be too long before I receive my rather large parcel, hopefully without an equally large customs bill.

Just barely over half the weight of Ogre DE.
If we look at timelines with batch 1 finishing late May, with time on the water and distribution via WGF USA, we're probably looking at late June / early July for initial backer shipments. That is generally consistent with what Adam had suggested earlier. I think the bulk of backers receive in 2015 Q3 ending Sep 30 - so this is well before the holiday season hits.
With Gencon running July 30 to Aug 2, I think it's pretty clear that Adam will demo (and should sell) during the show.

On model storage he said
3) The large monsters will not fit in the box once assembled. All the survivors will tho. There is actually a fully separate box, that all the sprues come in. Its the entire size of the box and 2” thick.
Also there are 3 new miniatures in the store and a restock of the Satan twins and Flower witch

I've just gone to place an order at the store for two figures, when I get to the checkout I'm being charged $46.50 for shipping.
$46.50
There is no alternative, cheaper shipping option. I've always felt that shipping was a little high for multiple figures, but this is a bad joke. It used to be less than half that figure IIRC.
Am I missing something?

No that's it at the moment,
although the much cheaper (untracked) USPS first class option is still mentioned on the site it doesn't seem to come up as an option
so it's either a policy change (maybe too many 'lost' orders from the untracked service means it became uneconomic)
or a glitch in the store (I've contacted them just in case)
I hope it's the latter but I fear it's the former

Well, I placed the order anyway. I'm ashamed of myself, I know that I shouldn't have but I couldn't help myself, like some kind of junkie.
I feel sore and abused (or "butthurt" as Poots would say), yet I only have myself to blame.
...
If the more expensive shipping is a policy change because of people abusing Paypal Chargebacks, why not allow customers with existing, blemish-free records to choose the cheaper, untracked shipping option?
At this point it would be cheaper to simply wait and buy from ebay re-sellers, especially after customs & Royal Mail have had their pound of flesh too.

If I remember correctly, and I may not, this year saw a massive surge in the cost of international shipping from the US that hits small orders particularly hard. Basically the way things sounded to be working is that there's essentially a flat carriage fee to transport a box that gets slapped onto things which is extortionately high for something small, but goes up very slowly in comparison to the size of the shipment. In other words, big orders (i.e. - bulk orders by a group of people) cost about what they did before, huge (i.e. - commercial/distribution) orders work out to be a slight bit cheaper, but small orders (i.e. - consumers) are now vastly more expensive.
Now, if my admittedly faulty memory is correct this was in the context of US/Canada, but if they're doing it for a border that amounts to a polite wave and drive-through I imagine that adding an ocean to the mix doesn't improve things. Not living outside the colonies I don't often price out international shipping, but usually the cost puts me off ordering from the EU for the reasons you describe; for the cost of shipping I could buy another set of whatever I was looking at from the UK if I find a US distributor, which is typically not that hard.
KD is obviously not going to be something that works out for though.

@Krinsath -- I think you're right there.
I know they're also charging "large package fees" regardless of weight. I believe if you have one side over 24" you're automatically charged this.
I had it happen to me about 4 weeks ago and it bumped the shipping fee up by like, $18.

I don't think that's the whole story regarding shipping from the USA to the UK.
I received a parcel containing 10 metal figures from Red Box Games recently, also in the USA.
The parcel from RBG weighed more, yet only cost a fraction of the KD shipping price.
If Tre can ship for a fair price, why can't Poots?

Interesting comments from...the comments section:
@Michael Portillo, the tray cavaties are wide enough to fit sleeved cards.

@Joshua, Not yet. I just approved the quotes today and we should have a schedule soon. @Herrflik, those dates are when the listed units would be complete and ready to ship out of their factory. @Charles Davies, 1) Card are bridge sized. “3.25 x 2.5” euro game card sleeves fit them. Here at the studio we use these “Fantasy Flight - Standard European Board Game Sleeves “ 2) Sure. I’ll post the specs of each expansion in the upcoming updates. 3) The large monsters will not fit in the box once assembled. All the survivors will tho. There is actually a fully separate box, that all the sprues come in. Its the entire size of the box and 2” thick. @Martin Lymer, these cards are digital proofs. They are printed on our final cardstock, which is a thick greycore. However they are not the final offset printed versions. They are about as thick as our character cards we send out with resin miniatures. @Shawn Signor, behind them. I would estimate around a month. But I don’t have a schedule yet. @Jason Hsu, because the resin beta still requires all of the print material, we have to wait until the first round of production is complete. Then we can airship them over and finally get these rewards out to you! @DSMiles, yes. Much ambition. Very foolish. But AMAZING!!!!
Apr 8 2015 on #95: from the project Kingdom Death : Monster
@Matthew Aslin, I’ll be closing in on fulfillment details over the next 2 months. I need to balance what is fiscally possible vs how to get everyone this game as soon as humanly possible. I want you guys to play it, I NEED you guys to play it! @Stuart Lacy, I am not sure. I might have an update on specifically that subject. @Joseph Blackett, Thank you. @Shawn Signor, haha we’ll just have to wait and see! @Aaron Farrington, yes, everything is locked down and units have been not only ordered, but physically produced. @Samuel A, send an email to support@kingdomdeath.zendesk.com @StillAlive, Fedex and express usps services require it. Depending on what courier we end up using for fulfillment it is data that we require. Holding up the process because several people have left it off would be a bummer. @Luke Roberts, haha. Its all good. I think its important that people air their opinions and I generally do not take personal offense to what people say. I understand that I am the “face” of the company and I would rather be available to hear the raw honesty then to subject fans to isolation or the feeling that no one is ever listening to them. @Phillip, its true. I really should only stick to hard facts.

Shipping has not only seen a shift in rates, but most carriers are also moving to Dimensional Weight as another way to jack prices up. Bigger boxes cost dramatically more then smaller boxes.

Yeah, but being near to 2 years (give or take) late is going to hit his bottom line hard due to shipping costs increasing between then and whenever this thing finally ships!

I'm not saying it is our problem, I just do feel a little bad for him about it.
Hopefully he's able to negotiate some sort of mass shipping discount deal with the USPS or UPS or someone to help mitigate it.

This was something he had quite a bit of time for to look into and IIRC he deemed it too much work or the like to get set up, so he'd ship everything directly from the US instead.
edit.
Before I sound like a totes jerk, this project is still the one I am looking forward to the most out of all projects I've backed to date.
Out of curiosity though, has US domestic shipping also seen a rise in price, or just all foreign shipping fees?

That comment about the base game's sprues coming in a separate box just as big and 2 inches thick is awesome and quite frightening.
16 pounds too? How much was Cthulhu Wars?
My mind still boggles at how much content this will have in there. To think how big each expansion will be...

Do what I did Gunslinger- purge all the unimportant games and junk, then offer to use that money to buy more shoes for the Mrs. !
That way you totally catch her off guard, she's happy you've cleaned house and dabbled in her interests/ pampered her more, and she's got no room to complain when you fill that temporary void with the mammoth box this game will be arriving in.
If the base game alone is 16 pounds, is that without the plastic as well, since that's got its own separate box? What about all the expansions? I doubt I'm the only one who ordered all the extra gameplay bits.
I cannot wait to see the final wait on that box. Woe to any mail carrier who has to lug that sucker up flights of stairs!
