Hey guy
I got a buddy that is firm in his belief that there should never be a list of Blood Angels without Mephiston, While I am somewhat in agreement with him, I am not completely sold on the idea of always having him at my side. When I use him, I keep him as a Destract for the most part, forcing folks to keep their firepower focused on him, instead of my Main Focus due to his Broken nature. What do you folks think?

I think he is not really broken, since I've killed him once, and never tasted his power before

As with all things it depends on your list. I don't think he would fit well in a full on mech list since he would be all alone on the field. He has his places and shines in certain lists.

I think that is where he shines. With lots of rhinos and razorbacks he is very easy to hide. It's hard to get any shots off before he can get in your face.

A full mech list is where he does best, lots of places to hide, lots of taxies for him to use and he fills a very useful role as counter-attack for mech lists

He's good, sure, an absolute beast. Even 250 points good. But's he's not invincible.
He doesn't have an invulnerable save. So, AP2 weaponry just tick his inflated wound count down. Devastators with Lascannons? Two rounds of good shooting, dead. Hell, an Ork Horde of 30 boyz charging his way. Lose a few boyz getting there, and then charge. He goes first, kills at most 5 boyz, then 20 or so boyz lash back, testing his 2+ save pretty hard. But even assuming he makes all his armor saves, 4 Power Klaw attacks are coming in. Hitting half, wounding probably both, 2 wounds down. AND he's in the middle of an Ork horde. And the whole horde is at least 30 points less than him.
Of course, using him as a distraction he's gonna do his job. They have to focus SOMETHING on him, and he'll probably cripple SOMETHING on his way out, so he's definitely worth it. But ussually, HQs are important and he may not be doing as much as an HQ as I might want. But then again, I've heard that BA HQs are...meh? Except for Librarians. Which he is.
I dunno, there are worst things to take every game, but against lists capable of kiting him/pumping him full of AP2/slowly him down with hordes, he's not gonna perform as well as maybe he should...

My friend played Mephiston against me. He threw him right at me. I tank shocked him, he failed his LD, and I escorted him off the board.
As people have mentioned, keeping him hidden in a vehicle until he is close enough to unleash his wrath would be much more effective.

No one is saying he's invincible...
but he's a beast. I've seen him almost singlehandedly wreck armies...and i've seen people panic when they see him and focus almost solely on him...giving you a tactical advantage as you manuever the rest of your army.
initiative 7? Flight? Fleet? Force sword? Strength 10? Between flight and fleet you are practically assaulting turn 1...especially if you go second.
Take him! he's sick, and he will at least draw your opponent's focus.

He works best with a jump infantry build or an alphastrike force that forces your opponent to deal with closer models before they can target Mephiston.

He's usefull, and has a nice shock value. But i wouldn't say hes a must in every list.
I'd also say he a bit too much of a points drain, especially if you want other expensive units.

I was surprised by GW a couple days back. With some adjustments, I think he'd be killer in a list like this. Drop the Terminators and Captain for Mephiston, change the Tacticals to Assaults, take Mortis Dreads instead of standard ones, and monkey with the Death Company's equipment. I do think the Death Company and their Dreadnoughts are essential for this style of list, because they'll keep marching regardless of glancing hits/small arms.
