So if one of Nurgle's domains is despair why the heck are his daemons so happy and grandfatherly? Shouldn't they all be morose, depressed, little buggers? I guess you could say they have come to accept death/finality and so aren't bothered by it. But that kinda goes against Nurgle being about despair.

Also if one of Slaanesh' postiive attributes is love how come he doesn't have the whole "cares about his followers" bit that nurgle does?

I think Slaanesh is more associated with lust than love.
And Nurgle's followers love decay and despair, and so when they cause it in others they're all happy!
And I think GW may have made Nurgle jolly just because...well, seeing a bloated, fifteen foot demon with pus coming out of open wounds patting another, smaller rotted demon on the head is just the kind of screwed up that the Warhammer universe needed.

Hi there, I'm an hole! =D

"Links disintegrate--
Bolt clanks back and forth behind the thudding roar--
Brass rains on the sidewalk--
The 'sixty rattles out its song.
A song I first heard years ago--
Of fireteams dug in on the breaks between the paddyfields, of tracer lasering the jungle night, of Hueys screaming through the void--
Of Lieutenant Castle getting short and hating it, wanting 'Nam to last forever--
A lullaby come all the way to New York City--
Come to sing you to sleep."

While seeing bloated,disease-ridden corpse daemons acting so merry is entertaining, I also like the idea of Slaaneshi cultists being warriors of love.

I like to jokingly call my Slaaneshi marines the Love Crusaders, they even have a pink bleeding heart as their symbol. I mean imagine a pink chaos marine yelling "believe in love!" as he charges forward, in an effort to restore the power of love and friendship in this bleak galaxy.

Just as ironic and silly I think. But I guess fat Nurgle has to steal all of Slaanesh's thunder.

edit: Forgot to mention that while he's associated with lust, the chaos gods also have postivie qualities that are technically part of their domain. Like honour for Khorne and hope for Tzeentch.

People turn to Nurgle when they are plagued and dying in despair. If you were in that state and he offered to remove all those troubles and the pain and turn it into your strength then I'm sure you'd be happy about it. They feel no pain (hence the rule ) and are gifted with whatever their "saviour" creates to help spread his influence.

I guess that makes sense, though it's odd that the physical manifestations of despair are so damn happy.

Hurm I think the current granpappy daemons could be as entertaining as a daemonified Eeeyore. He's funny depressed.

Is it only me, or does Nurgle seem like santa claus in this way? Except for being a daemon, and his presents are in the form of diseases.

From what I've gathered from various daemons it seems Nurgle believes his diseases are 'gifts' to people which makes him the most 'positive' chaos god. I might be wrong though

Eh slaanesh isn't "love" it's "lust". The problem is many people can't separate the two emotions. Love is someone you care for and want to be with. Lust is something you just want to tear into & get to the good part.

It's akin to watching adult movies. You don't love the actors in them, you just lust after them.

As for why they are so golly, well it's funny. Think of papa nurgle as the golly fat guy who just can't wait to give you more "Gifts".

I recently had a lecture about the emotions of pleasure and pain, how we all do things to go towards pleasure and away from pain. Lust is indeed pleasure for yourself and love can be a mixture of pleasue and pain.

sorry I'm going off topic here

Back on Nurgle; which gives you more despair, a despairing, sad man shooting you with a bolter or a laughing, manic person puking on you as he rips your arms off?

They seem to be the odd ones out though. GUO's are definitely a jolly ol' bunch and Nurglings are equally jovial. Even Beasts of Nurgle roam the field searching out playmates to rip to pieces.

Which makes sense, considering their origins. Plaguebearers are supposed to(for all intents and purposes) be the plague-slain reanimated and reshaped.

...urrrr... I dunno

Well, I always assumed it was GW adding a positive aspect to an otherwise unappealing God. I mean, let's be honest, if he was a miserable uncaring rotting miser, nobody would want to worship him. By having a kind and fatherly aspect, and actually caring for his followers, Nurgle actually becomes a truly nice god to follow. I guess it's like having a benevolent and kind dictator, sort of.

Nurgle and his host is happy and jolly becuase he believes struggling makes you stronger. So as long as he makes the human race struggle with disease and such they will become stronger.

Why are they so friendly/jolly? To make Slaanesh despair, of course

I thought Nurgle was jolly because he's the twisted, perverted God of HOPE, not despair. People turn to him in their despair, because they're sick / dying / whatever, and he protects them from death through his gifts of everlasting decay. Nurgle doesn't make you MORE sad, unlike say Khorne the god of killing, worship him you get to kill more.

That's just my take on it anyway.

Nurgle is supposed to be despair turned to acceptance. It's Tzeentche who is hope turned to desperation.

Hmmm thats sounds right. That dynamic of despair into acceptance is what makes Nurgle and his followers happy (in a sense). Definitely not because they're solely creatures of despair.

On that same note Slaanesh is love turned to lust. Also I'm quite sure that love is technically part of Slaanesh's domain, but it's heavily overshadowed by the other stuff.

In fact all the gods have, or used to have, positive aspects tied to them like hope for Tzeentch, martial honour for Khorne, and I guess acceptance for Nurgle.

I think the positive/negative duality was explained in Liber Chaotica

Here's one relevant quote: "Slaanesh can be seen as an amalgam of the diverse drives that surround pleasure, these can include joy, contentment, aestheticism, romance, and love" This is all paraphrased btw.

"Order. Unity. Obedience. We taught the galaxy these things, and we shall do so again."
