I was just wondering about the specifics of Dakka not having a Reputation System. You know, where if you like a post, you +Rep the user, and if you hate a post, -rep the user.

I am not saying it needs one, I am just wondering what the thought process of not including one was/is. Almost every other forum I go to has one.

+/- rep systems seem silly to me.

I think getting a negative rep might actually encourage trolling.

(I only have -9000? I better try for -10000!)

I don't know any actual reasons, however, for not having one. Just a thought from having
used it in the OTZone.

Sounds like an open invitation for abuse to me

One of the forums I used to post on a lot had a system whereby the mods and admins could award "points" to posts that helped other users (by answering questions on how to play the game, etc). The approximate number of points was displayed via different coloured stars above your avatar.

Eventually when the system was established various bonuses were given to users with certain point ratings (new "hidden" forums, extra forum abilities, etc).

As much as I did like that system, it was still open to abuse.

I also don't think that it would be particularly easy to implement on this forum, as much of what is discussed is far more subjective.

Hmmm, I suppose it could be used as trollbait, when you think about it.

I think Lego and the Mod team have more than enough on their plate as it is without having to police a rep system as well.

A 'like' button is in the pipeline for threads and posts, but not a standard rep system like other forums use as they are too open to abuse.

If you lick posts make sure you do so above the p-p line.
Would factor in a large dog such as Great Dane just to be on the safe side.

Will there be something similar to the "most recent posts" page where you can see the most liked posts (possibly weighted by time, so that popular but old posts will eventually be replaced)?

Most likely, I'm working on other stuff at the moment so have not started fleshing out the system yet.

Rep systems are silly. I don't know why people keep asking for it. Certain users who post lots of er.. Argumentative posts will instantly have a huge negative reputation, while people who post compliments all the time will have a higher one without their comments having any substance to them. It just doesn't work. Dakka has good mods, so most users with over a couple thousand posts have a good enough reputation. Besides that, only new users really benefit from reputation systems. Most regular dakkites know who to listen to and who's cool, etc..

Rep Systems just = popularity contest. Dakka doesn't need to be anymore like a high school than it already is, thank you.

I think if you read Lego's comments, it will not be a "reputation" system, simply an "I like this post" system. From what he has said it will not have any discernible effect upon the user and will simply allow people to be able to point out posts they like so that others can read them.

I think he was talking about the system the OP was asking why we don't have.
